January 17, 200422 yr So... i reformated my H-D, now my comp won't boot. this is what i did, I low level formated ( changed ALL bits to "0" ) cuz i thought i had a virus, i then used a win 98se boot disk to creat partitions, the format the H-D. i then tryed to install XP pro, but i got a message that the setup comand for XP can't run in a DOS enviroment. next i set my comp to boot from CD thinking that it would find th setup.exe file and run it with out going in to DOS my comp didn't even reconize that there was a CD in the Drive. i then installed win 95, but when i boot i get: Error While Initializing Device IOS:Windows Proection Error. You Need To Restart Your Computeri went to microsoft help, and found that AGP graphics cards can cause this error ( I have Ge-Force Fx5600 256Mb ). took that out and replaced it with an ATI mach 64 PCI graphics card, i still got the same error.help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i'm out of ideasthis is my comp's config before al of this:AD77 inf mother boardamd althon XP2500+512mb pc2700 ddr ramGe-Force Fx 5600 256Mb 8x AGP80Gb H-D52x CD-ROM52x32x52x CD-Burnerfloppy Drivethis my config now:AD77 inf mother boardamd althon XP2500+512mb pc2700 ddr ramATI Mach64 PCI80Gb H-D52x CD-ROMfloppy DriveHELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!i'm suposed to be competing in the FA 2v2 tourny so.................. my comp has to work ASAP
January 17, 200422 yr This "windows protection error" can be caused by invalid master boot record in HDD. It can be fixed by running "FDISK /MBR". And I suggest to reinstall XP with CD boot, not by upgrading w95. Go to BIOS setup and make sure your first boot device is CD-ROM. Can't give you specific directions about that cos it is BIOS dependant. Then boot computer up from XP CD , reformat your disk and install winXP.edited: just clearing - fdisk is for win95. XP doesn't even have such utility. Booting from winXP CD and installing XP must fix everything anyway on HDD.
January 17, 200422 yr Author i set my primary boot drive to CD but it just skipps over it like there is nothing there,i will try again, thx. more ideas plz, all ideas r welcome.
January 17, 200422 yr I had this problem a lot at work when we used Windows 95/98. Try booting into safe mode/command prompt only and rename smartdrv.exe to smartdrv.old It may sound strange, but I think this is the problem.-Fatty
January 17, 200422 yr Author thanks, but i've given up on the w95 angle.when i try to boot XP from the cd i get invalid system diskreplace the disk, and then press any keyhow do i fix this, is the boot portition of the CD bad???

January 17, 200422 yr NONONONONO Do this it is SSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much easier. Find the make of HD you have. Get the floppy disc or Cdrom that came withit and set your harddrive up using the MFGR install/disc format software. This is 2004 people and it is soooooooooooo much easier. With Maxtor hd's it is call Maxblast. http://www.maxtor.com/en/support/downloads/index.htm With Western Digital it is called Datalifeguard http://support.wdc.com/tips/index.asp?tip=69&static=y Use the utility and then load your operating system. It is foolproof.
January 17, 200422 yr If you cannot boot from you winXP cd, there is another solution. Boot up from floppy with win98 startup disk with CD support. If you dont have one, you can get one from www.bootdisk.com. If you don't have another computer in you house ask help from you friends. Then insert you winXP CD, go to /i386 folder and run winnt.exe. It starts XP installation.
January 18, 200422 yr Author arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggggggggg!!!!!!!!! i'm one stinking lousy file away from fixing this mess... i think . setup wont copy 1 file, i don't rember which one, but set up won't run with out it. arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggggg!!!!!!!!!!!!! i hate windows stupid $!!$%$% @#! ^$%! !!!!&$ ***!.... um any way thanks for all f the help.when i get back on the server will an admn SLAP ME SILLY PLZ. i swear that i will never do something like this again, ever.
January 18, 200422 yr LookGet the make HD you have.Put their utility disc in and boot up.Follow their instruxctions.Put a ME or 98 floppy in and follow their instructions.It takes 5 minutes people.I am not kidding.5 minutes. That includes booting up.The operating system takes a little longer of course.
January 18, 200422 yr Author whoohooooooooooooooooooooooooo it works i got windows setup to work(my disk was being stupid) and i am busy formating and reinstalling. i am sooooooo happy i could kiss you all... but i won't seeing as i dont know you that well and well... that would just be wrong. 8) Again thanks for all of the help i would have been lost with out you guys. and i still want to be slaped silly
