What do I need to get into this ARMA III thing? I have watched multiple hours of game play on Youtube, and I am liking it quite a bit! 

 

What version should I purchase?

I would recommend getting the "Apex" Edition.

It comes with the base game, Arma 3, all three DLC's, and the new expansion pack "Apex" to be released in the next month or two.
