After surviving the zombie apocalypse, she should certainly be qualified for where no man has gone before. Entertainment Weekly reports Sonequa Martin-Green, likely best known for portraying Sasha the past few years on The Walking Dead, has signed on to play the lieutenant commander at the center of the CBS All Access original series. She’ll mark the first African-American woman to ever lead a Star Trek series, and the series will also feature Trek TV’s first openly gay character (played by Anthony Rapp). This is also the first Trek series to not focus on a ship’s captain, as well. So yeah, a lot of firsts. Oh, and before you think this means Sasha will be the next to meet Lucille, the report stresses the actress will “continue to serve” as a series regular on Walking Dead. Which makes sense: Discovery is set to run just 10 episodes per season, and Walking Dead is notorious for sidelining characters for weeks at a time. So, that’s certainly something that could be worked out. With Martin-Green locked to star, you’d have to think the creative team will be barreling ahead with this series as soon as possible. Much of the supporting cast has already been filled out, and the studio already bumped the premiere a few months to May 2017 to allow some additional time for production. Though Bryan Fuller stepped down as showrunner, it certainly sounds like his vision for a diverse spin on the Trek formula is still coming to life. Discovery is now being led by the creative team of Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts.
