March 26, 200422 yr Ok Marshal walked away from his computer and when he come back it the monitor thing was going telling him to check his cables and his optical mouse was off. He had to switch the power off then when he turned it back on it never booted. It would not display anything. I poped the case and put an old Geforce2 card in there just to see if it was that and that didnt work. I looked at all the fans and they are all turning including the one on the power supply. I next replaced the HD and NOTHING. I cant even get it to boot enough to get to the bios. I was wondering if you guys have any info. I was wondering if the bios went belly up or the MOBO?IDEA?????? Suggestions????I have been wanting to get us both new systems but we really cant fund it right now.
March 26, 200422 yr When you turn on your computer, there is some beep and long beep to help you of the motherboard problems and additionnal cards...When you turn on your computer and all are alright, it make only 1 short beep and after your computer light on and run good.If you have 1 long beep = graphics card fail,if you have 8 pulsion beeps or short beeps = your ram card are fail or moved from there slot : remove it and reinput it in these slots. Now, there is the base of the problem, another is when you turn on and the power go off immediatly, there is dust in the power supply = you need to open it to remove the internal dust, spiders, flies with a small paint-brush or pencil and a vacuum cleaner or an aspirator. This is your first aid, heard the beeps to tell me how much and also when they are mixed too with long beeps & short beeps to find the fail(s)...Egidio.
March 26, 200422 yr Author I dont get any beeps that is why I think it is the bios / Cmos but I cant find a way to reset it. Marshall has a 1.0Ghz AMD T-Bird on a Asus A7PRO mother board
March 26, 200422 yr no beeps? does the board light up or the hard drives spin up or anything at all? the power supply might not be engageing the motherboard when you push the power button.. tricky part about that is.. it could be the power supply or it could be the motherboard.. so if you got a spare power supply laying around id try that.. if that doesnt work id say your motherboard has had enough.. time for a new one prices for a motherboard would range from about $70 to whatever you want to spend.. i do remember having an old celeron 500 that did that.. the motherboard just gave up i tried the power supply it wasnt it.. so anyway thats my guess sorry it doesnt contain good news other then you now have something you can take to the target range and shoot at
March 26, 200422 yr Author I am leaning toward the MOBO but I wasnt 100% sure. The led light come on the mobo and all the fans kick on (which are coming off the power supply. The GF3 card he has in the AGP starts the card fan also...would that mean the motherboard is getting enought power or is it still possible it could be the PS?
March 26, 200422 yr sounds like the power supply is ok.. you wouldnt happen to have that plugged into a ups or anything would you? sounds like some type of small surge smoked your mobo...
March 26, 200422 yr try clearing cmos then reboot to see if you can get into the system bios. if this doesn't work check all mb connections even look for a loose jumper if all to no avail try another power supply and if that doesn't work it may be a problem in the MB which means you'll need to take it to a depot. later
March 26, 200422 yr your saying you put back g2 card sounds like you recently or not long ago put in more power hungry vcard with cooling fan ?my pc2 did almost similar thing ... light on mobo by ram on, all fans turning ... the power supply was no longer able to put out enough power for everything, but put out a little ... changing power supply solved prob.souns like your power supply diminished, partially fried from extra load of vcard with fan.atleast as already said, easiest to wiggle or reconnect all chips, plugs, cards incase of dirty oxidized connection ... then change power supply ...otherwise mobo i guess.
March 26, 200422 yr State Cop next to the battery on the main board ull find a jumper that has 3 legs I I I and a jumper put on 2 of em II I. Turn off the power put it on the last 2 I II and keep it like that for 2-3min than put it back on II I and turn on the power. U should be able to boot at this point
March 26, 200422 yr Author Well I have it trying to boot again and I can get in the bios but it will not pick up the HD now. I have tried 2 and for some reason it will not pick up. I have noticed the bios is acting a little flakey though.
March 26, 200422 yr Do this even though you are getting into the bios.......The easy thing to do is take out the Mobo battery. Put another in and see what happens then. Yes dying batteries do cause problems.Take the ram out and try a different slot. Or better yet try different ram. If no luck.......Take your Powersupply out and lay it on top of his case and just connect the mobo cable. That is it. See if it can boot/get to the bios. If yes then connect the HD. See if you can get to Windows.I have had a computer(2) not boot because of a seemingly good powersupply or a YES bad DVD/CD drive. Once you have eliminated the p/s, memory, mobo battery/cmos, hd's, cd roms, and floppies. There are only two things left. The mobo and processor. It is easy from this point on.If you have a similar processor install it.I have some 1 gig Durons laying around. 1 XP Palomino 1800 too.If not well all you need to do is buy a Mobo proc and memory. Think about it. It is money but if he has DDR then a Mobo and AMD proc is around $110 at Newegg. Even if he is Intel right now. A switch to AMD is easy and inexpensive.
March 27, 200422 yr Author He is using a 1.0 Tbird (AMD) but has PC133 memory. I am looking at funding a small AMD Athlon system with a little over 512 of DDR. Then maybe working on that dang system later. I removed the battery and made sure the contacts were clean but havent replaced it yet. I will try that stuff in a few days...I have to work for several days so Marshall is using my system. I had an old system that wouldnt boot with a DVD-Rom for some reason ...that crossed my mind here and I removed everything but the RAM and chip. Thanks for the tips...I will try those things when I get time off.
March 27, 200422 yr Since you might have a functioning chip. All you need is a mobo and ddr. This is what I would get. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-144-609&depa=0 http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-150-045&depa=0
March 27, 200422 yr My idea would be to listen to the computer and reconnect everything... like the computer says... all hail computer powa
