April 15, 200422 yr woke up tuesday morning because i heard a siren outside my house around 9am BST The 1st thing i notice was the fact that the little "cable" light on thefront of my modem was out (start of a bad day always signified by no internet) as well as no clock/radioThere was a huge crowd of people around a hole with the paramedics in it... Ambulance, police and fire dotted up and down the road. There was a Powergen Electric van over the road and a Water board van also... wondering what was going on i watched for a second out of my front window. They are putting in a new junction at the end of my road with a Pedestrian crossing and new street lighting. so there have been road works there for about 3 weeks....I decide to phone my mom at work to see if she knew what was happening, (she would have left around 30 mins before i was rudely awoken) but..... THERE WAS NO DIAL TONE... AGHHHHstill didnt twig what was happening and i contacted NTL (my phone/isp/cableTV provider) on my cell.. the conversation went as normally do, i worked my way thru the options and got to speak to someone, who ran some tests on my line, there was nothing getting in or out.. an engineer was called out, but i had to wait until friday (they had to be joking i had no communication into or out of the house) so i went thru to their customer relations, and moaned about compensation for lost time, and charges for calls from my cell phone.. and then there was "an engineer available tomorrow afternoon".... walked over to a waiting police man to enquire about what was happening... shortly after the Phone engineer had turned up...this was the reply i got,,basically the guy had been digging up the road with a jackhammer and had gone thru a 415volt mains power cable. To add insult to injury he had also hit the gas main under(luckily the fuse system had blown and he missed the water main about 2 inchs left of the others. so we didnt have live mains water into the houses -that would have been interesting)and upon inspection of the hole, (amidst the 10 or so shielded fibre-optic cables) there was only one damaged... and it had to beMINE dammit..the guy already had serious burns to his hands, and a severly dented ego, and now i wanted to hurt him too...I wish i had a camera now, because about 2 feet away from the guy was a big yellow notice at the roadside detailing the whereabouts (depth and distance from sign) of the mains electric, gas, water and communications lines under the pavement (sidewalk)
