April 25, 200422 yr OK here goes, i think i am having a problem with my GFX card..it is a 9800XT. (sapphire 256meg)My internal case/mobo temk sits neatly at 27/28degC and CPU is around 45degCBUT my GFX card fluctuates between 70 and 80degC, i have moved everything that was near it in the PCI slots to 2 slots away, tidied up the wires inside the case, and made sure that air is flowing freely from the bottom front case fans, to the top rear exhaust (past the GFX card) and power supply.. i have also removed the PCI slot cover in the slot directly below the AGP slot again to increase cooling. But the temperature has not changed a bit!Speaking to other people, their GFX cards are around 45 deg (same as my CPU)... you guys reckon there is something wrong?
April 25, 200422 yr I'm thinking its just a huge card. You may want to get a fan for it, or set one up just for it.Maybe your information is wrong. Open your case and run the comp. Don't touch anything, just see if anything feels super hot in there.
April 25, 200422 yr Author well the case/mobo is like only 27degC i am worried cause i dont think it should be higher than around 50
April 25, 200422 yr Im not sure how this translates into C, but unless the room I keep my computer in is physically warm, my fans keep my video card and CPU going at sub 90 (sometimes high 70s) F temps even under full load. Im not sure what could be causing your problem, is your thermal grease interfacing correctly? Are your fans blowing the right way? Mac will prolly have the answer, but this is what I cna contribute
April 25, 200422 yr I would remove the Cooler on the card and look to see what is under it.It is easy to do. Take off what is there and add mmore of what you have as far as thermal paste goes. Make sure the fan is spinning too.If all is well there. This is what I do.I have a 80mm fan on Stilts directly under the card. I use long deck screws into the 4 holes on an 80mm fan. Since I have NO soundcard this sits right under the videocard. Then on top of the card I use a 80mm fan with motherboard standoffs in the 4 holes on the fan. A mini stilt combo. In both situations I use DumDumb, poster tack, sticky stuff that is non-conductive. On the bottom of the feet/standoffs/screw heads. This assures lots of air on both sides of the card. It works well and does not add noise b/c 80mm's on the inside of your case usually are not noticable.
April 25, 200422 yr Author i have a soundcard tho, would you reccomend a PCI slot cooler maybe? i am gonna dig off the heatsink and see whats under it... didnt think of that.
April 26, 200422 yr You still can do the stilt thing on the sound card. Just use dumb dumb on the bottom.
April 26, 200422 yr i was about to get that card until i read several reviews that showed the extra 128 ram (256 total) didnt hel pand the saphire card didnt perform as well as the regular ATI Radeon 9600XT.... now heat problems and low fps compared to nVidia, lol if it gets worse tell me
April 26, 200422 yr I still think the program you are running is messed... 80ºC is very hot, it's like sticking it in almost boiled water, the thing should have melted at that heat.
April 26, 200422 yr To make the translation between de "degC" or °C and °F :For °F to °C = 100°F - 32 = 68 divided by (or /) 1,8 = 37,78°C.And for °C to °F = 45°C *1.8 = 81 + 32 = 113°F. The 28°C * 1.8 = 50.4 + 32 = 82.4°F.But you have a security Temperature around the 60 / 65°C (143 / 149°F) selected in the bios who freeze the cpu or shut down the computer for to eliminate the overheat...Like for the car speed it's : Miles/H to KM/H = 5/8 : 55 M/H = 88 KM/H.And KM/H to Miles/H = 8/5 : 160 KM/H = 100 M/H.Egidio.
April 26, 200422 yr I wonder if it is actually in Farenhieght. That would sound abou right. If it is fluctuating then something is wrong.I would do the dummy test too. While it is on and reading 80 deg.Touch the heatsink.if it is warm then it is a sensor error. If it burns your finger then you know what to do.Mac
April 26, 200422 yr Forgot for your gfx card perhaps the onboard fan does not works good, some dust can to brake the rotation of this fan : take an eye when the power is on to see if it rotate at the good speed else desassemble it to clean the axis and Rotor with pur alcohol to remove the dust and lubricate with silicone oil because other oils make glue on the axis and brake against most the rotation.Egidio.
