So now we get to see the newest Nvidia and ATI cards go head to head.

Nvidia also launched an "Extreme" version of their latest 6800 today, I guess to try and steal some thunder from ATI's latest offerings.

The cards look pretty even, both ATI and Nvidia do well in certain benchmarks (though ATI creams the 6800 in far cry, and the 6800 does the same to ATI in Quake III based games). The features are pretty much the same, except the 6800 supports 3.0 pixel shaders, while ATI is stuck at 2.0. However ATI now has a neat new anti-aliasing trick that makes the card look like the anti-aliasing is higher then what it really is at. eg: If you are running 2X AA, enabling temporal anti-aliasing makes the output look like 4X AA with only the 2X AA performance penalty.

Looks like you can't go wrong with any of the newest cards from ATI or Nvidia.

1. Quake3 "named" games were written specifically to take advantage of Nvidia (booo)2. ATi's shader is 500tiems better than anything Nvidia! They are both strong in what they do, its like trying to compare chalk and cheese tho, you cannot put these 2 up and say "they are both good at X, one is good and one is bad at Y" etc, because the filtering techniques and such like are different, They are very impressive none-the-less. It will be a hard choice when i come to change this GFX card for sure!
I know, I don't really think it matters what card you have, both are good, and the benchmarks are misleading. Almost every game now is made for a certain card company (ATI or Nvidia) so when they these two cards go head to head on a certain game, whatever the game was designed for will work better
