Might be that ATI is doing what most companies are doing now. Only supporting the newest and most used operating systems.

    XP would probably make my computer run slower.

    You don't need the latest patches anyway for the most part. If your computer isn't good enough to run XP, then it must not be good enough to run newer games, which is what the patches mainly fix, so there isn't much of a problem.
