July 19, 200421 yr Dont take the topic too literal. I dont drink, although today i felt like it. I finally got few money so that i could START upgrading my comp. I bought two things today: DVD by LG and new radiator with fan. These things i considered as first step to the next generation (for which i will need more money obviously).I needed DVD, becouse my last one broke down year ago (it worked in 20% - in the most cases it started reading disc, then did a alert stop and spat them out as unreadable). The new radiator was just pure accident. I had 4/4/4 cm metal cage and 3.5 cm fan (diameter). It spun at 5500 rpm and was quite loud (not to mention uneffective). The new one i bought is a beauty. 10/10/7 cm with 10 cm super-quiet fan on top of it.So i set up my workshop. I am unexperienced in these matters, so amongs the thing i had two phones to my friends, who are experts at these things. Installing new DVD was like sneezing, boring and quick. I had no troubles with it. THen came the radiator. Friends told me few things about this through phone and once i witnessed the process, but this radiator was different from what i have ever seen or done. First i had to install a cage above the socket, so it would be cased. Then the thermal conductor (a real pain with all these cables and cards in there). But when i started inserting the main body, well... that was it. Mother was constantly screaming at me from adjacent room to stop cursing (there was about 1-2 curses per second). WHen one srew came in, the second couldnt. So i unscrewed the first one and screwed in the second. Surprise! THis time the first didnt want to screw in. All the time the bottom of the radiator was dancing on my CPU core. I was afraid of damaging it (for then that was good bye for a while, not to mention that would seriously screw up my scientific project under way). I was feeling sick by then (okay i felt sick before, but at that time i had serious headache). When i considered barbaric aproach (using hammer) and scientific one, i have chosen the latter. I uninstalled the whole contraption, look at how it works, how the screws are injected, what are the angles and such. Then, on the 3rd try after that, i had both screws in place. Then it was just the work to make them tight-as-possible, inserting G-Card, M-Card and the power unit (they were gone, for i wanted to have more room to operate), pluging in cables and praying. It worked and it works wonderfully. At 1500rpm i had average idle temperature 45-46C, but it started slowly rising (sign of lack of thermodynamic equality), so now it runs at 2300 rpm. And it IS very quiet. I hear the power unit and G-Card fans, but there is no trace of CPU fan. The specifications say, that its 21dB (@ 1500rpm) to 28dB (@ 2800 rpm) - dont forget the sound 'power' (forgot the word) in dB scale is a logaritmic one. Now i am getting constant 44C.Reason for me to tell sucha a boring and uneventfull (if you really take a look at what i was doing) story? That is becouse i know know, that the temperature of my body is only 5C lower than that of my CPU. I was doing everything @39C. Thats like operating on a heart (which CPU really is) with (see the topic name) 7 percentiles of alcohol in blood. That may be not large quantity in polish scale (there are MDs here that operated @ slight less).I am on drugs now, but io have learned valuable lesson - if you want to change the temperature of your CPU, first check yours.PS Tommorow i am buying new set of phones WITH microphone. YES, YOU WILL HEAR EVERY PAINFULL WORD I SAY FROM TOMMOROW ON. I have to watch myself though, for i am cursing now as ever before and i will have a mic to spit it all out on the server. I will need accustom myself to the no-cursing loudly again. :x
July 19, 200421 yr well the temperature f the body is 37DegC.. not 39, so you were 7 degrees below... or were you 39 because you were sick?i was expecting,.... installed fan, turned on,,, big fire... no more CPU!!!
July 20, 200421 yr Author I was sick by that time.Oh yeah, some additional specs, i forgot to mention earlier:- Before the renowation, avg. temperature of my CPU was 60+ C. - The blasted thing weights half a pound (580g to be exact). I was wondering, will my slot not break from it.
July 20, 200421 yr You can always reinforce it with a steel bar, just weld it on (don't screw up that weld, it'll be hard D:)
July 20, 200421 yr Author I had to screw the microphone idea. Didnt wanna get banned from TA server.I got new CDRW recorder instead. Its VERY LOUD though. THats bad.
July 20, 200421 yr i hate loud things. specially since i keep my comp on all night in my room. -G
