So, I'm graduating soon and my parents have already told me that my graduation present is gonna be a laptop for college. Now, my dad's pretty computer savvy (he's a software engineer) and knows what he's doing, but he's also partial to Dell. I was just wonder if

a)that's a bad thing and

b)what are some reccomended laptops (not just for gaming, i need it for my classes too)

well if you can do it gaming on it, id say its a safe bet it can do pretty much any school thing you want it to do.

that laptop will kick most cimputers here in the pants. Those mobile processors run just as fast as the a64s and sometimes faster.
our school requires we buy a high end laptop (this years model is the HP nw8000 workstation) with a Pentium M, its a pretty **** proc. If they made it for desktops they would seriously own AMD. Ours is 1.7 Ghz, I cant imagine the 2.0, it must be pretty sweet

i recommend dell. it's what i use, and i'm a computer geek.

DON'T BUY DEEL! Sorry to diss em but they may have cheap prices and goog technical support but.

(A) you get what you pay for in computers never forget that?

( ;) i've had to format and fix my moms computer 3 times since she'd had it!

And she's only had it like 3 weeks?

Well that could be caused by your mom, Dell in general are great computers.

Yep, most computer problems (especially those that require reformats) are generally user generated problems. Dell makes good PC's all around (when talking the pre-built/preconfigered), and the most I've ever had to wait on a part (on the rare occasion it was needed) was 24 hours. Haven't heard anything bad about their laptops either. At work, we use Compaq/HP (damn contract.. ;) ), but the laptops we've been getting are like 9200-9800's and they all seem to be pretty good (except for the outside sales rep we have who is constantly bringing it back to me with a bug or a load of adware in it, again, user generated problem.. lol).

Take my computer. It's a simple Dell 4600. I paid $800 (5 year warranty included). It has had 0 hardware problems. Any issue was always caused by the user (usually someone other than me) making a mistake. Now software issues are a different matter. You can't blame the hardware for that in most cases. ;)

Yeah I have to agree with you on don't buy a Dell, I just don't really like them. Now if you have the money and want to buy a good laptop I recommend a good HP.
