100 MILLION TRILLION DOLLARS!!!

some are cheap.

It's based on player count... I haven't checked prices in a while but for other games I've seen between $5 and $10 per player per month. Less money if it's password-protected.
I think you can build yer own can come out on top ($ wise) in the end. Of course if this server is for not many players. A kid around here built 3 dedicated CS machines that he said he can run one w/ 18 players on a cable connection w/o lag.

u can use any normal PC with a static IP and the right ports open. for any server.

i dunno what CSS requires in terms of servers

If you're trying to host a public game server at home, forget about it. Unless you have an outrageous amount of bandwidth, you will not be able to support more than about 6-8 players. Most cable/DSL providers don't offer more than 384KB upload bandwidth, which isn't a lot. Our game server has a 100MB connection, or roughly 250 times the bandwidth of a typical home connection.

Not to mention the fact that you would probably want a dedicated computer to host it. Ours is a 2.8GHz P4 with 1GB RAM tweaked to prioritize the game server processes.

In short, there's no way around it. Game servers are expensive.

3.2ghz now, isn't it?

We do not pay by the player for our system, but if you dont then you must know about servers. Some of the things you need to know are how to set things up like the game, make sure there are not any security holes, and many other critical things. The advantage to this is we can put whatever we want on that box and could change games in almost no time. We also can usually get our server update first because we do not have to wait on someone to do it for us if an update comes out during off hours.

For a server like ours you can expect to shell out a between $130 - $250 per month not to mention a set up fee that can run from $100 - $250 just to set it up. It just depends on the system you get and the connection. Then if you go over your bandwidth for that month they charge you hella money! The good thing is we have so much bandwidth it would take a lot to run us out. We have protections in place just for that though.

To run a full time server like we do and do it right you need a team of good people and some good funding. If you are wanting to do this...a word to the wise do not always count on donations....Some people are nice enought to help but others just dont care because if your server goes down they will move to another one.

wbos, that is if you want to buy the whole box and run it yourself, if you go through a company like gd, nfo, or velocity, they update the server for you, and maintain it, but yo have less control over some things, but the price is lower since they run multiple servers on the same box at their place
