June 26, 200322 yr I'm getting a new computer (yay!), so I'm wondering, should I go with the AMD Athalon 3000+, or Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz? My 'rents are buying it for me (yay times 2) so I don't wanna make it full-out mega expensive. Thanks for input.
June 27, 200322 yr I think you're right Donut it is. But, since we're all playing games here, AMD all the way. And there really isn't too much difference anyway I don't think. Whatever your preference on companies. I really prefer AMD because it's cheaper.
June 27, 200322 yr I hear AMD is better but since i have Pentium and i like it... i voted for Pentium
June 27, 200322 yr I need to know the main purpose of this "beast"gaming, all around, surfing the web, I mean all my hardware certs gotta account for something
June 27, 200322 yr AMD is better for games as stated above and u can overclock it much easier getting more speed. Pentium is good for windows applications i don't think its as good as amd for games. Remeber its not that hard to run windows, u want a chip that will perform under the rigors of gaming. AMD is your choice.
June 27, 200322 yr I'm thinkin g he would surf the net and game on it. Thats all Para does, anyways!! :(Get lots of RAM. LOTS!!
June 27, 200322 yr AMDPentium is a piece of silicon that should be resmelted and turned over to Athlon to do something worthwile...And it being better suited for Windowses aplications is becouse its designed that way. AMD is universla and generally better, simplier, cheaper, more efficient......
June 27, 200322 yr hmmm, i just bought a new computer and had to decide P4 or AMD... The Reason i chose the P4 3GHz was, that the AMD 3000+ is only running a ~2.2-2.4 GHz... sure u can speed it up, but...So, P4 3GHz rules...hehePeaceKP
June 27, 200322 yr Simplest way for me to put this is..AMD runs as fast as INtel per LAbel until the Xp3000+ came out.Look at the CLock speeds.AMD chips can run competetively at Huge differences in CLock speed = More efficient Processor.INtel has the MHZ advantage, but thats not saying much when a AMD 2200 mhz chip can compete head to head with an INTEL 2800 mhz chip.Same Reason IM buying into ATI for my screen cards, they run as fast or faster aat Marginally Reduced Clock and memory speeds compared to Nvidia. I support any Product that can Compete against Microblows and INtel.and I support not having a Serial Tracker (cough Pentium) and (Cough Longhorn) OS's that will eventually Not allow you to Look at or even own things that aren't Microsoft Aproved.

Its more compatible, more simple. Intel cooked up a plan with Microsomething that they will develop their products toghether so it only SEEMS that Intel is faster than AMD.In reality though a 2,2 Ghz AMD is better that 2,8 GHz Intel, just as Mister D said...

June 28, 200322 yr The Next Windows from what I read will be an XP optimized for Gaming. No name yet but that should be cool. It will be out at the end of this year or early next.As far as AMD vs Intel.Intels Quasi Quad pumped memory architecture is not as efficient as AMD's. The CPU is not as efficient as well. It sort of has a lot of horsepower but spins its wheels.Clock for clock AMD is more efficient that is why AMD can do as much or more at much lower frequencies than Intel. The big AMD debate boils down to price.AMD is less expensive than Intel for a "same performing speed" system. The difference is around $150 if you build it yourself.Put that money towards a better videocard and more memory.......then you have a faster/better ballanced system than Intel.
June 28, 200322 yr Author ....AMD > Pentium, but at teh store we were at today, we can't get ANYTHING to go with the AMD, and they've only got up to the 2400+, and I was hoping for the 2800+ or 3000+......plus they're only going with the NvidiA cards with AMD so..........*sigh*.........another store that will hopefully custom-build for me the way I want.........stupid too expensive Alienwares.......
