Hey guys!! my g/f bought me HL2.

So now i installed it..after installing it steam automatically starts up...then the product activation box pops up...in which i enter the CD key..and after that a box pops up saying that Installation of Half Life 2 Game Of the year Edition is required before continueing and another message comes with it...now what do i do?? i installed the game over and over gain and its not working...what do i do??? Plz need help!!!

I would look into the Steam forums and see what they say.

one thing that i have noticed is that in the steam dir there is no folder from HL2...even though the installation dir is C:\Program Files\Steam....

I would uninstall HL2 and Steam.

 

Then delete the Whole Steam folder.

 

Defrag.

 

Reboot and Reinstall HL2.

 

Steam will take care of itself.

or another thing you could do is, with the games window open in the menu bar click games and "activate a product on steam" enter your key and steam should begin downloading the game plus the updates. This method does take a lot longer, but it ensures the installation and activation.

u could ask one of ur frineds that owns half-life 2 to get on ur account and activate it for u

ok but then i will have to install all my other games again as well....hmm ill try to do this...keep a back up of the steam folder....thn delete the orignal one...and install it...see if it works........

i did this....but still the same thing again....i got 5 CDs with this pack.....only 2 are used for installation of the game....no idea abt the other 3.....when installing the game it calculates how much disk space is reqd...so when i click on the HL2 checkbox it says 8KB and when i click on CS:S its says 1268MB....now what does this mean???

i'm guessing, but ... it seems you installed hl2, steam autostarted (likely trigered by hl2 installing file) asking for cd key ... steam was unable to detect your hl2 in registry, so failed ... i'm guessing it was looking in registry which was not refreshed as reboot may be required after installing hl2 for registry changes to be registered ... so i'd try uninstalling hl2 (and removing any remaining hl2 folders/files everywhere), leaving steam and all else alone (except someone must help us here as i seem to remember when steam is messed up you delete a .blob file from one of it's steam folders and it resets upon steam being restarted)... reboot in hopes messed up registry and steam gets corrected (otherwise a registry cleaner may be required before trying again) ... install hl2 ... ignore or stop auto steam registration of detected hl2 install ... reboot to register more fully registry changes from install ... then start steam ... if it still doesn't show game installed on game list, i think it will show hl2 on list as greyed out (otherwise find way in steam to redetect supported games installed) ... try clicking that to activate registration of it thru steam ... or something to that effect, sorry i forget the exact procedure ... but i know i've had to do something like that for something ... main thing is reboot after installing before doing anything with steam, i think. keep us posted on "trials and errors".

Thats what i got..Its an orignal HL2 Game of the year pack..on the box itself it says that this pack includes 5 CDs and with HL2 there is CS:S,HL:S,HL2:deathmatch.....thats all what it says on the box..other than that i have no idea...

Wipe your comp clean again of HL.

 

Search for Steam and delete any folder.

 

Also goto start, run, type in regedit

 

goto edit and find

 

Type in Valve and search. Delete every Valve entry that you find. To search again hit F3.

 

Once that is done.

 

Download the HL2 Steam installer.

 

All you are going to do is install Steam and then activate with your CD keys any game that you have. Yes you will have to download all game content but there is something wrong with your CDs/Comp/directories that I cannot tell without being there. That is unless you want to buy me a ticket to....... Where do you live at the moment? India? I am off of work till February 20th or so.

Let Steam do all the work. That is the beauty of Steam. If you loose the cd's. You have online content.

Now you will have to activate all the games you have not installed/registered by inputing the CD keys.

The Steam installer I use to do this is around 211mb.

Yeah but when i try to activate the game it says that u need to have the game installed before activating it...the same msg as the screenshot

Did you try installing the game after Steam is installed?

How many Hard drives and partitions do you have?

I uninstalled every thing..every HL game and mods..uninstalled steam and deleted the folders...and cleaned the registry and when installed HL2 u have to install steam first before installing HL2...i only have one HDD no partitions...

There is a fix for this.

 

I remeber it somewhere.

 

Defrag again.

 

Then try a reinstall.

 

PM Klink. I think he found the cure for this as well.

i did PM Kol Klink but he told me that he doesnt know anything abt that sort of problem....
