first the mobo splash screen (logo) pops up (like normal)

then the screen goes black and says this (stuff in brackets [] does not appear on screen)

Verifying DMI Pool Data ............ [Normally happens]

Boot from CD : [Normally happens]

Boot from CD : [Normally happens]

A disk read error occurred [Does Not normally happen and i'm guessing its bad]

Press Ctrl+Alt+del to restart

this is all i know... also i do not have the windows disk at my current disposal... (at dad's work), my system is currently running windows xp pro sp2....

no didnt change a thing... the cds are out... it works fine with them in normally, all i did was turn my cpu off like normal with noproblem yesterday... and when i go to turn it on now.. it wont work.... it was perfect last night... sigh..... i'm cursed....

go into bios and turn off boot from cd or switch it so it boots from hd first....if not then somthing you did corrupted windows files and it cant start

if that is the case run your windows disk and do repair ...once in the dos screen run C:\Chkdsk ad scan for errors....you may have to reinstall windows if it comes to that extreme

sounds like your harddrive bit it...dont happen to have a spare one to try booting off of? doesnt need windows, as a drive without windows will give a no OS error and that would at least tell you that you system isnt reading you other drive.
Say you play'n on the =A= server? Its been awhile?

:p :) unfortunatley due to certain misconducts that is up to the discretion of the senior council....imn hoping its soon though i cant stand they way most other servers are ran...next month maybe

Try unplugging the powercord.

Press the power button a few times.

Let is sit over night like this.

Try restarting in the morning after plugging the powercord back in.

it lives... for now... thank you all again for your help... i have no clue what was wrong with it.... but my dad got it working so i can at least backup (just in case) and use it for the time being...... sigh... i think its time for an upgrade...

I hate it when stuff just starts working again. That usually means that you never know when its going to stop working again.

Goodluck buddy.

That is why I posted as I did.

Many times a Powersurge will set off the powersupply or mobo and make it act funny.

Do the above b/c it sets everything back to normal so to speak by discharging all latent stored energy in the system.

Actually its the Gremlins that do it over night. :peace:

and if you decide to try win cd for repair or reinstall, with hard drive not bootable, you'll have to first set in bios to boot from cd 1st.

I don't know what type of MoBo yo0u have...but I'd recommend that you turn on the S.M.A.R.T. for hard disks. See if the SMART picks up that your HDD is bad. it did for me, and I was given enough notice that I recovered all of my info before I lost it. The symtoms you're telling me are exactly what happened to me when my HDD went south. You should see a line in your boot up that says.

S.M.A.R.T. System enabled "5"-Smart status "Good/Bad" [the 5 may be a different number, and the Good/bad...well you get the idea]

Also could be power supply. I was thinking since all you did was turn it on, psu, like a light bulb blowing, shorted out part way in it's coil, putting out a fraction of the power it used to. May or may not run always. Or hard drive getting old too.
