April 21, 200619 yr Well, i let my friend borrow my 2001 pontiac grand am yesterday. He ran the gas down until the gas light came on. Car died about 4 blocks from home. Couldn't get it started even after putting gas and a new fuel filter on it. So, about 4 of us pushed it home. Thought i was going to have a heart attack. Let me tell you, I'M OLD!!!!! sad thing is i had to walk back 4 blocks and get my mustang. well i had it towed to the shop to be fixed. Don't know for sure but the way they are talking is, when he ran the gas low it shut off the sensors or switches to the fuel pump. Which by the way is in the gas tank. Good news is, i have a warranty on the car and only have to pay $100 deductible. I also had to pay $31 for the towing, they picked up the $50 on it. $131 isn't too bad. Oh well, glad i have my Mustang as backup.
April 21, 200619 yr lol wolfey i would have made him push the car as u drove ur mustang behind them honking ur horn

I bet you in the future your friend wont let the gas tank get that low... You should cash in the pontiac and throw in a superchager, new wheels, take off the pony decal off your car and put on a ' pwned by impact2oo ' decal

April 22, 200619 yr Sorry to hear what happened to your car but at least it wasn't the mustang
April 22, 200619 yr Just out of curiosity, did anyone cycle the key about 6 x before cranking the vehicle when it ran outta gas? It's almost impossible to re-prime your fuel pump sometimes, but it **shouldn't** have done anything to the sensors...at best, it would overheat the fuel pump itself. That shouldn't have cost a ton of money (part OR labor) to install. Rockett

We probably did overheat the fuel pump. Anyways, the garage called and said the fuel pump was shot. My fuel pump is in the gas tank, so they have to drop the whole tank. I got a quote from Advance auto of $228 for a fuel pump. But, we are talking about the dealer, so it's probably 2X that. lol Anyways, i only have to pay $100 of it so i'm not too upset. So, let this be a lesson to everyone else. Don't get too low on gas on a fuel injected vehicle.

Don't get too low on gas on a fuel injected vehicle. or don't buy american made "cars". I have a GMC Envoy and damn everything cost more for this suv then for a german made vehicle. Plus the warrenty sucks from GMAC, their Customer support is just horrid. The truck itself is nice, but when something breaks or needs to be replaced the cost is just crazy.
April 22, 200619 yr you are a rotating alien head  ...it saddens me that someone noticed my head
April 22, 200619 yr Honestly, I buy American vehicles...but... Kia has the best value on the market right now. Great gas milage in **most** of the vehicles and a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty. I bleed Ford blue tho, so I'll prolly never get one. So, let this be a lesson to everyone else. Don't get too low on gas on a fuel injected vehicle. That's what a fuel gauge is for... Would help to LOOK at it every once in awhile. :D Rockett
April 22, 200619 yr Honda Insight Toyota Prius Both over 60 MPG, Both are Hybrids I think both are worth checking out with the way gas prices are going...
April 22, 200619 yr The American cars are not what they used to be. They need to drop the bigger cars, and shorten the truck lineups. Add more gas friendly vehicles, and maybe even a hybrid
April 22, 200619 yr Mitsubishi has the best warranty. Mitsubishi has worse quality control than the American car companies who have all their assembly plants in Mexico. (The main reason I can't bring myself to buy anything American.. The Japanese cars I like are actually made in the US.. imagine that..) I used to really like Mitsubishi's cars, especially the 3000GT. I had a '93 3000GT VR-4 for about 14 months, until the engine started to go south, and of course, no warranty coverage. I'll stick with Acura and Lexus until something better comes along.
April 22, 200619 yr I worked for Mitsubishi for awhile, and nope...not the best warranty...you have to purchase extended warranty to reach the 10/100k. The standard has been 5/60k from Mitsu. Rockett
April 23, 200619 yr I had a 2000 Audi A4 and the car was amazing. Whenever I needed to change brakes, wipers, oil, anything except tires it was covered. Thats bumper to bumper warranty. American car companies like GMC I have to pay for all of them and they say bumper to bumper warranty. what a crock of s%#t. after experiencing GMC's bumper to bumper warranty is the reason why I'll never buy another american car. The only vehicles i'd consider is the Chrysler 300m, Dodge Ram 3500. or an american muscle car. As far as warranty goes, anything not 'american' has a great warranty and when most companies say "your covered bumper to buimper" they mean the whole car, unlike american car companies your just covered from the front bumper to the front fender.
April 23, 200619 yr Intank fuel pumps are prone to overheating when empty. They rely on the fuel as a "Heatsink" so to speak. The older the pump. The easier they fail. Never run that low on intank fuel pumps unless you have a warranty or like to test your luck.

I called it my tin can on wheels. I will never buy another one again.
