What do you guys think about the ingame advertising supposedly involved in BF2142.

Will it slow internet connection? It has to read what's on our pc then send it back somewhere therefore using bandwidth.

Will it invade our pc privacy?

Is it a good thing for this company to know this info to make better games in the future or just to make more money in the future?

Does it look at your files on your pc then advertise specifically for you. I.E. will it send you heaps of pron if that is what you have on your p.c.? LOL.

well its hard to say because no one actually knows what the ads will be, like will they just be billboard type things you see in game, or will it be a pop up similar to the messages from ea ect....I dont think it will cause a problem with gameplay or anything cause that would be kinda lame IMO. If they are going to be sending me stuff to my email or looking through my files I would concider that a violation of my privacy and Im sure not many people would stand for it.

I just came back on the forums to tell you guys about this.... I was thinking about purchasing the game, but not anymore.

So. In the latest CGW podcast, they received retail boxed copies of BF 2142.

When you open the box, a big slip of paper falls out first, preceeding any discs or manuals. The slip of paper says, essentially, that 2142 includes monitoring software which runs while your computer is online, and records "anonymous" information like your IP address, surfing habits (probably via cookie scans), and other "computing habits" in order to report this information back to ad companies and ad servers, which generates in-game ads.

Now, I can live with certain in-game ads (though apparently there will be Dodge truck and Neon ads in the bleak, futuristic world of 2142), but including a lengthy description - outside of even the Eula - seems to indicate even EA knows that this is some shady borderline spyware ****. I don't support it and won't be buying 2142 (for a host of other reasons, too).

Taken from here http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/centipedes/battlefield-2142-with-a-dash-of-spyware-207955.php

Wow, that's lame. Didn't even think EA would go that low.

Guess I thought wrong.

Hmmm. Seems questionable. Might a good anti-spyware software like "Spyware Detector" clean out and block it ?
Holy smokes :) that's just not right. Hmmm makes me wonder what kind of ads I would have? Tiger ads. Armory ads.

Not suprising tho. Game companies have been slowly crawling into bed with advertisers for some time now. I've noticed Anarchy Online has started billboard adds for the Jeep Wrangler and Comcast... really irks me because it destroys my imersion. Wouldn't bother me if I was not paying to play the game. Showing that crap when I'm a paying customer irks me.

As for BF2142... I'm not suprised by anything EA does anymore. They are the shadiest damn bastards in the industry. And if I didn't like the BF franchise so much, I'd never by a damn thing they sold. I'm sure you can try removing the spyware... however like most programs with spyware attached to it, I'm afraid that removing said spyware may cause the game to refuse to work.

well i dislike the idea of them spying on us to advertise to us while were just tring to play a blasted game.I t makes no sence to me why they'd do this but if it does become a problem i have no issues with uninstalling and breaking my disk into a million pieces. But before that all happens i really am quite excited to play this game (real game)and can't wait 'till tomorrow when my copy should arrive at me door and say play me:)
I wasnt planning on buying this game until mid to late november anyway. Now im glad I made that choice. So that i can see from you guys say after playing whether or not it's intrusive / worth the money.
If they do advertise, I believe it will happen during map changes. Kind of what we see now with the Demo when the show all the upcoming BF2142 maps. As far as spyware, I would think that they would have an option to disallow this type of action. If not, I foresee a big lawsuit coming out of this. :)
If we can put an armory add in game then that would be killer....

:p

I hope your right gator, I dont like the idea of spyware included with my game

Sorry to throw another link, but here's one with more info: http://www.cad-forums.com/showthread.php?t=63136

As some of you may/should know by now - some disturbing information about battlefield 2142 which seems to have been well surpressed until today seems to have broken out.

When you open your box for the first time - you are presented with a piece of paper which contains the following: INSERT SECOND QUOTE HERE

There is no indication on the EA run website about it, no disclaimer before you preorder for download, nor on any of the online stores that you can preorder from (which i visited anyway)... oh and of course it says nothing on the outside of the box.

When people bring this subject up on the EA run BF2142 forums, the thread is deleted within the hour with no explanation.

So you are forced to install spyware on your own pc if you want to play the game, and if you DONT want to play the game of course you're not entitled to a refund from EA.

What are peoples thoughts on this matter?

The Software may incorporate technology developed by IGA Worldwide Inc. ("IGA") (the "Advertising Technology"). IF YOU DO NOT WANT IGA TO COLLECT, USE, STORE, OR TRANSMIT THE DATA DESCRIBED IN THIS SECTION, DO NOT INSTALL OR PLAY THE SOFTWARE ON ANY PLATFORM THAT IS USED TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET.

You've got to be joking. I will NOT play a game with blatant advertising that also uses spyware to customize that advertising. It worked in Need For Speed Underground and the like because you expect to see a billboard for Burger King and Best Buy. I don't expect a billboard stuck to the side of a TITAN for the 2007 Dodge Neon.

EA just stooped to a new low.

DeadRoach, the ads in anarchy online are only for the free players. If you pay you can remove them :p .

Boy you hit the nail on the head. I dont quote much but had to here.

LOL

I just thought of something. The Neon is discontinued.

That would be funny if EA did something like that. Advertise something that doesnt exist anymore.

I think it's overblown as to danger.

your probably right, it just seems dirty...just trying to make a buck, you know what I mean.

Actually Nadril, I do remove them... but sometimes I turn them on to see the "Fake" adds that crack me up sometimes.

But yes, the whole situation with BF2142 has turned out to be overblown in alot of ways. Norton Anti-Virus on my system seems to have effectivly blocked the IGA software on my system from operating. It has ID'd it as a possible worm and I have told it to block it. I have been playing the game without any issues and add free.

I accept that advertising will be a part of our gaming experiance and the norm in the very near future. However, I would really hope that game companies would try to make advertising "immersive". I mean, if we were playing BF2142 on the Berlin map, and we saw an add for the latest in next century snow parkas from Sketchers, it would fit alot better than an add for the new 2007 Dodge Charger, would it not? You can make product placement part of the background... just look what they did in Demolition Man with Taco Bell... they "futurised" the Taco Bell to make it fit into the storyline. Why not do the same? Why not seek adds for the new Polaris Snowmachines of the future? These adds would make much more sense, they also subconsciously communicate to the user these companies are the companies to the future, and alot of us might get a chuckle out of these "fake" adds that still advertise the brand name we know today.

We're all used to adds, I just object to them taking up our bandwidth, spying on us, or taking away from our immersion in the game.

it has been described a few times around the adds are on billboards around the maps.. specifically they record teh view time, the angle from which the ad was viewd and what it was at the time..

and ofc where you are connection from and your connection time,
