Posted February 7, 200718 yr I have been trying a new game called Vanguard and kicked the WoWcrack. Has anyone else tried it? If you have the game we are all playing on the server Varking (team PVP). I was also wondering if anyone had any of the free 10 day trial keys that they are not going to use. I give mine to another friend but I know some other people wanting to try the game.
February 7, 200718 yr Seems way too much like UO to me. Graphics are decent though. Personally, I've had my fill of the MMO scene for awhile. I just want to get my hands on Hellgate: London and then I'll be happy with HG:L and BF2142 for awhile.
February 7, 200718 yr Yea I am playing on Florendyl. I been playing it since it came out but I may be starting to get burnt a little because I am stuck living at Khal and I wanna travel more but I am just too weak. So I been playing BF2142 again.
February 7, 200718 yr Its not like UO. Its sooo much like EQ2 they might as well have called it EQ3. Even the classes and items are pretty much the same as EQ2, just different names. Its been out a month and people are already halfway through the levels.
February 7, 200718 yr Halfway through the levels are you kidding me? I was on the other day and did a search, and there was a guy at level 45. So that would mean by today at that same rate, he is at level 50 and so that is the end of the game right? Blahhhhh he must not sleep or something lol or work?
February 7, 200718 yr Yeah, there are always one or two stay at home people. I've beening seeing averages of level 30+ to the top guilds in the leaderboards. Many have 45+ on either the dimplomacy or crafting spheres.
February 8, 200718 yr Author Its not like UO. Its sooo much like EQ2 they might as well have called it EQ3. Even the classes and items are pretty much the same as EQ2, just different names. Its been out a month and people are already halfway through the levels. It was out in beta. Everyone was was reset after the release. The release was last week...trust me I had one of the first copies in stores. I think Tuesday of last week. There were people playing Sunday night that preordered or did the direct to drive option. I never played EQ2 but the main dev is the guy that come up with EQ so yeah there is a lot of the same stuff I understand from people that have played. They took that up a few notches by adding in other things that you couldnt do in EQ or WoW. The key bindings are the same as WoW though as well as the quest log. They still have a lot of bugs to work out still but it seems pretty good to me. I check vgplayers the other night and the highest person (non-GM) was like 28. Granted that is after 1 week but it was only a few people that high last night. Those are the no life/job having people that play 24/7. I made it to 12 last night with some what normal play times. @Branlock ---BTW good state That area is pretty cool other than when IVAN or something like that comes blasting through.
February 8, 200718 yr Hey, StateCop. Haven't seen you post in awhile. Yeah, I'm in the port city for now. Born and raised near here. Been sticking around due to some family issues (stepmom recently passed away from cancer and my dad's health is slowly going downhill over the past 10 yrs from heart problems). We might move somewhere, maybe Colorado, in the future. Right now, I'm busy with the 3 month old. Anyways, back on topic. When I mentioned UO, I was referring to the PvP free-for-all playstyle. I hated that with a passion. I can't stand 80% of MMO players these days. They have no morals or personal character when it comes to gaming. They do whatever gets them off, even if it involves ruining someone else's fun. I just want to find me a group of like-minded gamers and enjoy my playtime. Plus, I hate grinding almost as bad as PK'ers. I get bored easily. I'm all about exploration, not grinding levels away.
February 8, 200718 yr From what I can see, there are many different servers. Only 2 of them allow PvP. Tharridon & Varking. Tharridon is FFA PvP and Varking is Team PvP. Florendyl server is Role Playing preferred. After that, all the servers are PvE only. They tried to implement PvP in EQ2 through the use of arena combat, but they were unable to get effective/balanced PvP into the game. You'd see healer PvP last for 4 hours and you'd see stun classes own all the other classes hands down over and over. So I myself don't look foward to PvP in a game really designed around PvE. I do the asian MMO's when I want more PvP.
February 8, 200718 yr My old guild ldr is already 50, but hes korean. vanguard is too laggy on my computer atm, due do the suckage that is my graphics card. and eq got really boring, so im playing WoW now(with a bunch of buddies from eq2) and havin a blast. and yes, vanguard is EQ3. servers are even run by sony entertainment, which means they will BOMB HARDCORE. trust me.... -G
February 8, 200718 yr Yeah, Sigil gave up about halfway through the creation process and ended up teaming with Sony to handle servers and customer support etc. Same thing happened with Mythic Entertainment and Warhammer Online. They ended up selling themselves to EA as well. It says something about the little guy trying to make it in the computer game industry. Its hard. But what sucks is companies like Sony, EA and Vivendi Universal bring their known problems into the games that were meant to break away and solve those problems.

That may be true, but you have to admit, EA has some serious marketing and distribution power at its disposal. The game of 2007 for me is Hellgate: London. They ended up teaming with EA and letting EA handle the distribution of the game when it goes gold. EA doesn't have any say in the development of the game, thankfully.
February 8, 200718 yr We might move somewhere, maybe Colorado, in the future. Right now, I'm busy with the 3 month old. How are you doing finding time to play any game? A mmorpg no less? Just askin because I got a bun in the oven too and I am gonna miss my games and other hobbies I will still find time to play games though even if it has to be 9pm or later at night
February 8, 200718 yr I gave up WoW in October when BF2142 came out because not only was I getting bored with the game, I knew my play time was about to end when the baby got here (she was expected in the first of Nov). I will tell you to expect very little free time for at least the first month. She'll be too tired from labor to do anything and the doctor will more than likely have her on bedrest so you'll be doing most of the work both around the house and with the baby. In the second month, it will get a little better. My best suggestion is for both of you to get some "Me Time" where one takes care of the baby for a few hours and the other take some time to themselves (read a book, play a game, go shopping, etc). That was you are getting some time to relax. Taking care of a baby is a lot of hard work. In the third month, it gets a bit easier. The baby will be more in control of body functions (easier to burp, etc) and you should be helping it develop a sleep cycle. Just this week (at almost 4 months), we've started adding a bit of cereal to her formula. Now she goes to bed around 9:30 pm and sleeps until almost 6:00 am in the morning. I'm so used to going to bed at 1:00pm from taking care of the baby that I can get more game time in at night. The wife goes to sleep early and once the baby is in the crib, I take a monitor reciever into the computer room with me so I can keep an ear out for the baby and I get to play for about 2 hours. What we've managed to try so far is for both of us to try to get at least 2 nights to ourselves during the week and then we trade off on the weekends (one watches her Sat morning, then the other watches her Sat afternoon, etc). It's not working out too well, so we'll be trying a different schedule next week to see how it goes. Expect your 8-9pm game time to still exists when the baby is my daughter's age. Now, as she gets older, I expect to slowly start getting my game time back to normal. Heh.
February 9, 200718 yr Vanguard doesn't suck. I have tried EQ1 and WoW and Dungeons and Dragons and Guild Wars, I loved Star Wars Galaxies Pre-CU. All those games I have tried for a few days and they were all a waste of money for me. To me, Vanguard ranks 2nd out of all these, although it is no SWG pre-cu. I am not really a mmorpg person anyway. The only reason I tried Vanguard was to fill the hole that SWG left me in after the combat upgrade. I can honestly say Vanguard is fun, but I am already losing interest and this is the 3rd week. They should make all servers pvp enabled, but only if you go overt or something like that similar to SWG. Also, the world is large enough, they should make their spawns weaker so even noobs can explore the world more. I have been playing for 3 weeks already and I am still friggin stuck around the city of Khal and I think that is the reason I am getting bored. If I try to venture out much further I am just gonna get my butt kicked. Also they should have the player housing available for noobs too. So for instance, a guild could be able to entice new members by offering housing. I haven't even seen a player house yet! I can understand that a boat should only be owned by a guild or a very wealthy person, but housing should be for everyone immediately.

February 9, 200718 yr I heard that Vanguard was released when it was because they ran out of funding. Not a good sign.
February 9, 200718 yr How are you doing finding time to play any game? A mmorpg no less? Just askin because I got a bun in the oven too and I am gonna miss my games and other hobbies I will still find time to play games though even if it has to be 9pm or later at night My six month old is usually down for the night between 6:00pm and 6:30 pm (though he wakes up and eats around midnight and 6:00am). When I get home from work my first priority is to spend time with him. After he goes to bed I have a little time to game at night. Most of my gaming is on weekends though. My wife is a full-time mom so she shoulders most of the load when it comes to feeding him and waking up with him in the middle of the night.

The advantage to both of us working: The wife usually wants time with the baby on some nights, so it frees me up for gaming (when I don't have things to do around the house).
February 9, 200718 yr A.K.A. Vanguard is another grindfest MMO. No thanks. American MMO's aren't grind fests. If you want a grind fest play Lineage II Commercial servers. It took a year for two people one playing during the day and the other at night to get a L2 toon to level 75. They've raised the max level since then and added class changes to the toons since then so its even more. Grindfest is the term used by people who don't think their toons improve in proportion with the amount of time they put into it. In EQ2 they started putting skill upgrades mid level to appease the people who complained about grinding. In the end you can't make these kind of people happy. Its the never ending battle between the casual gamer and the hardcore gamer. The only way to solve that arguement is to make casual servers and hardcore servers.
February 9, 200718 yr Grinding: a.k.a. killing the same mobs for hours on end then when you level, you move on to the next group of mobs and kill them for hours on end until you level, etc. Wash, rinse, then repeat. UO, EQ series, DAoC, and many other were this way. WoW, at least, allowed you to quest to level or you could grind if that was your preference. Blizzard never forced you to do either, you had a choice and both were just as rewarding. Well... except when you got to end-game raiding... But, this is just my opinion.
February 9, 200718 yr You forgot the part where you had to go kill mobs in WoW to complete quests. Same thing in EQ series. There are quests in EQ series where you don't have to kill any mobs either, just like in WoW. Killing mobs is part of any MMO, EQ and WoW. That fact alone does not make a game a grindfest.
