Questions for those with LCD monitors.

Featured Replies

My current monitor is dying. Hours of usage every day for years is probably the cause. So its time to buy a new monitor for me. This is my first LCD monitor and this question is geared towards those who already have them.

According to my research, LCD monitors for gaming require a low response time to prevent "ghosting" images during gaming. A good gaming monitor has a low response time. I'm looking at one now suggested for gaming with a 2ms response time.

Response times for LCD monitors are between 2ms - 8ms. Some are 4ms and some are 5ms.

At this time, there are no "widescreen" 2ms LCD monitors. All of the widescreen LCD's are 4+ ms delay. So I'm torn between getting the non-widscreen 19" 2ms monitor or a 4ms widescreen monitor. So here are my questions.

Question 1#: Does BF 2142 support widescreen play, or does it appear square on your widescreen LCD?

Question 2#: Do those of you with 4ms response time LCD's notice any ghosting of images during play or any other issue while using an LCD?

Anything below 8ms is good. You shouldn't see any ghosting with that.

No dice isn't smart enough to program 2142 for widescreen. Although if you do get one it will play at the resolution you have it set for. You will just have the black lines on both sides. Also anything with a 500:1 contrast ratio is good as well.

On another note don't get a 19" lcd monitor. The resolution is the same as a 17", but the pixel size is bigger. For that reason I got a 17" monitor.

I use a 22" widescreen. BF2142 does not have native widescreen support, but you can configure it to run widescreen via the shortcut. People have said it just stretches the sides of the screen, but I haven't noticed anything like that.

I never noticed a difference in ghosting between a 2ms and an 8ms response time. My display is 5ms, and there's no ghosting at all.

I have a 22" widescreen and it does smash the image down a little. The "reason" is that Dice thought by adding widescreen support (and thus adding a higher aspect ratio which would add a wider Field Of View) it would give some players an advantage over others.

I would highly recommend you get something that supports the 1080 i/p definitions as computers will be moving that way. Phrogg has a 2000:1 contrast ratio and it looks beautiful so I'd try to stay up over 1000:1. Other than that, yeah, under 8 ms and any bells and whistles you'd like on top of that.

I'm looking at these two right now. Both have 2ms response times but only 700:1 contrast ratio. You guys are saying stay above 1000:1 contrast ratio.

Is ASUS sacrificing contrast ratio for fast response time on a 22 inch widescreen?

I wouldn't try so much about the response time. Anything below 8 is fine. Although now that I think about it. Mine is a 2ms... Either way if you stay below 8 you'll be fine. If your looking at monitors 22". Make sure they are HDCP compatible. So they can play Hi-Def movies when the parts become cheaper.

You will be fine with 5ms! I actually think that is the monitor that jack has. It is a GOOD MONITOR! There is no ghosting what so ever.

I don't believe you Phrogg. You just want me to be 3ms slower than you so you can knife me easier than you already are.

I'm gonna have to go with the ASUS monitors. They are so new, many places don't even have them yet. They are HDCP compatible and despite doubts on the 2ms response time for a 22" LCD, every review says it delivers it.

2ms LCD isn't necessary, unless you just want bragging rights. I have owned a 8ms LCD monitor for a long time and it doesn't ghost.

I actually just started looking for a LCD monitor for my girlfriend and was astonished that they are selling cheap 4ms LCDs for about $160. I remember when I bought this 8ms LCD, it was the top of the line gaming LCD and they had just barely getting them to this low of a refresh rate.

Mmm... that's her. And she is a beauty, I tell you what. I've never had a single problem with it. The only thing that could be better is the viewing angle, but since I'm the one sitting at it there's no problem. There is no ghosting in game. But, those Asus monitors sure are pretty...

You should be fine with 700:1; I'm just a fan of really sharp colors. Chances are you're not going to notice a huge difference going from what you have to what you'll get. I know I could notice the difference between my last monitor (A Sceptre X9 with 700:1) vs. Phrogg's 2000:1. I can still notice subtle differences between my 1200:1 to his 2000:1. But, like you said, it's what won't ghost and won't leave you high and dry in a knife fight with an amphibian.

I'd suggest the Dell 2407WFP display. 1900x1200. I have two of these and absolutely LOVE them. The widescreen dells is what all the major gaming studios and such use to show off their software if you go to a conference. They are the best displays money can buy.
