the highest newegg has is 2.2. right now i have a 2.01 so that wont be much of a change for me...

backstory:

my friend wants to sell me a mobo (socket 754) and his video card ati radeon 9800. my mobo at the moment is a socket a, as is my processor, so im looking for a new processor to fit the mobo.

i know this stuff sucks, but its an upgrade from my current system

Ok.

Here is what you do.

You have a few options.

Get a Mobile 754 Proc.

Get a 2.2ghz Venice core that is a pretty good processor.

The Turions are a great choice but you need to find if the Mobo will support the chip.

The last thing is if you want to spend some money. Invest in a better AGP videocard. This will do wonders for a Socket A system or a 754 system.

I have a moblie 754 overclocked to 2700mhz. Radioactive uses it with a 7800GS agp. The system Flies!!! Stock was 1800mhz. The extra on die cache really helps and since they are mobile. The multiplier is unlocked.

there is actually quite the performance jumpoing from a 2ghz socket A to a 2.2ghz Athlon 64.

its not just a 200mhz bump in clock speed, its a completely different chip architecture with a built in memory controller that significantly boosts memory bandwidth and latency, even with socket 754 not being capable of operating in dual channel.

I have all three setups in my basement. Socket A, 754, and 939. All running todays games at high levels. I agree with what you are saying but videocards have come a long way.

The Tomshardware link should provide you with justification of what I am talking about.

For ease of instalation, satisfaction, reliabilty, minimizing operating system woes. Dropping in a FAST agp card is the way to go in some situations.

I am in the same boat kinda...I am looking for something more specific...an ASROCK 939Dual-VSTA motherboard.

I got a freakin' 6800GT OC video card...but the darn thing is AGP and I have an AMD socket 939 Processor, RAM, and the rest. Would make a cool test rig...I have seen it on ebay, but they want to kick up the price more than I want to spend. I guess that in itself tells of my commitment to find it :D
