Origin of the term "Noob"

Featured Replies

Well, I changed my mind. I think it came from a person being new to something and someone thought of.... ummm it should be noop!

The Origin of N00b...by Unwantedhero:

It is now:

n00b

which evolved from this path (earliest to oldest):

noob-newbie-newb

now...lets disect the word "newb"

newb

as you see, someone who is a "newb" is someone who is new to a certain game.

Thus, it back with newbie...then just evolved to what it is today...n00b

[rant]I think Unwanted is on the money with that one. I started seeing the word as newbie playing online in about 1998 or so and some illiterate bunch of kids have "coolified" it which I suspect is because they did not know how to spell newbie. Same thing with words like "cos" short for the English word "because" or "dat" which is Ebonics for "that". While some of these words do not bother me that much because they are abbreviations if you will; others on the other hand do BECAUSE it shows the lowering of standards to our English language. I understand English is not an easy language and my sentence structures would show that greatly, but basically the misspelling of words like "that" I find just unacceptable. I guess I am turning into and old fart at the ripe old age of 26.

ya, the literaucy(:S) rate in not just America, but most place that have internet access is going down. It's because of all those IM programs. They use u and r instead of the long words (you and are). I have to admint, even I use u and r most of the time, but this is because I'm lazy and type to fast....
when playing a game short hand such as "u", "r", and "rgr" are fine. I have taken statements from people in their teens and early 20's who use words to structure a sentence such as:Da Kat dat i saw over dere. I swear I have seen some that bad! It is all I can do to contain myself.
Da Kat dat i saw over dere.

those sentances are so annoying...it's screws up my brain when I try to read it

lol It does, doesn't it?

First time I tried reading that, it messed up in my brain. What I got was Dak at ak saw over dere. :? I think Im just stupid lol

spelling with numbers=1337 speachlets leave that to another thread ok? that one could get deep
The earliesy place I've heard it used was in Vietnam. However, it was a show about Vietnam (which was made in the 80s, can't remember the name). My guess is that it came from the military either during Vietnam or even before it. "noobie" (however you want to spell it) is the word the guy on the show used when he was talking to one of the new guys.
MASH maybe? rat patrol?hmm, I don't believe it would come from there,I'm not sayign that it didn't, it's a possibilitybut this thing is tooo wide spread to find the true origin, so like the beginning of the universe, there will always be many many theorys

Tour of Duty? is that the show's name?

Well, if you typed "too" fast, you might not have problem with those extra 2 letters. And, why are so many people studying to work behind a desk?! Are they becoming that lazy? What happened to all our skilled workers? Everyone wants to be a middle manager...
Well, lets get back on topic, I still stay it comes from Mortal Kombat Trilogy.

And I know I wont change my mind.

Problem is that I already proved that wrong and the term Noob didn't come from video games.

okay heres how n00b evolved to its current self today =P

new to the game

newbie

newb

noob

n00b

err at least thats my opinion

I think Ak1200 has it right on the money, though id swear the term newbie has been around for decades
he is right its been around for many many years 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)
ahh yes i see, okay correction then... instead of "new to the game" it should be "new to whatever" like maybe the new guy on the team, or the new guys in the army, etc. etc.
