Software EA CEO: Games 'Boring People to Death'

Michael Hoffman (Blog) - July 9, 2007 1:18 PM

John Riccitiello gives an in-depth interview for the first time since taking over as CEO of EA

Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello expressed his concerns regarding computer game publishers who could be alienating gamers. Speaking to Wall Street Journal reporters in the first-in depth interview since taking over as CEO in April, Riccitiello spoke frankly about new pressures the video game industry currently faces.

"We're boring people to death and making games that are harder and harder to play," Riccitiello said during the interview.

Even though EA is well known as a company which often times produces numerous sequels to popular video game franchises, Riccitiello understands that something needs to change in the future. Along with criticizing "boring" video games, he added the game industry must attract the casual gamers by creating new sales tactics -- find an alternative to selling expensive games that are too long for many gamers to finish.

"For the most part, the industry has been rinse-and-repeat. There's been lots of product that looked like last year's product, that looked a lot like the year before," Riccitiello added.

However, he praised Activision's Guitar Hero series, Vivendi's World of Warcraft, and Viacom's Rock Band, a game EA will distribute. Other video games in the future are "at risk of being a little less interesting than Facebook and iPods and the next cool cellphone."

Riccitiello's comments coincide with the start of a scaled down version of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), which used to be the largest video game convention in the world.

Are you bored to death with EA's games? lol

I think he should speak for himself, the battlefield series games don't have incredible replay values themselves. I haven't started 2142 since insurgency came out. Battlefield 2 was a great game, but they made a big mistake by making a mod of it and releasing it as the next version. The next version will honestly fail if they do not use a new engine, it's time for some change. I'm not sure if I will even purchase the next battlefield, COD4 is looking pretty good right now (if I will be doing much gaming at all).
;) -Everyone BUT EA is making good games. I picked up a game by 'Codemasters' called Maelstrom. Its graphics are slightly behind and it has a few minor bugs...BUT IT IS FANTASTIC! It is an RTS with 3 factions that are BALLANCED and VERY unique, even with one being aliens (which are FINNALY done right). While that is a prime example, there are many others. No one is willing to accept these 'diamonds in the rough' because they compare them to how pretty EA games are. [/small rant]

True. Games are getting a little boring. I get bored with a lot of games recently really fast. Someone needs to think of something fast. I have a lot of ideas for some REALLY cool games. Its just that it would be really really expensive. :o haha...

I'm gonna try the demo. Anyone else wanna try it here it is- click me.

I gotta agree that I'm getting bored of EA. Don't get me wrong, I love Battlfield. I really really enjoy BF2 and can find 2142 pretty entertaining, but as of late I've been finding it to be boring. Now that Insurgency came out I've been playing that alot. I'm also looking forward to CoD4, ET:QW, Team Fortress 2, Crysis, and other FPS games.

I just hope the next Battlefield game will make me feel the same way the first time I started getting into BF2. I enjoyed 2142, but like most of you have said, it feels like a retail mod and nothing more.

What they need to do is redesing and use a new engine with interactive backgrounds and better physics that will make games more interesting:D

I also get bored of gaming sometimes, and so I simply work on the website for entertainment. The Battlefield series has been the best online gaming experience ever, and I always enjoy playing it. I'm certainly looking forward to a new Battlefield PC game, as well as COD4 and Crysis. There may be others as well, but we will just have to wait and see.

Mostly, I enjoy gaming because of the interaction with the many clanmates and friend's over the past 5 years. They are more important to me than the game itself. If you an introvert, I guess you are a person who enjoys playing single-player mode games to yourself. I enjoy the company of my online friends, and as I said, that's most important to me.

We are always looking for new games to entertain us, and we will find some, I'm sure. Insurgency is a nice "Free" game, but I personally would not spend the money to purchase it (if it were to be sold that is). I don't care for the HUD at all, and it doesn't say who you killed ...I like a nice informative HUD.

Just my two cents... ;)

lol I'm sorry but to me, the Maelstrom demo was terrible. I'm not saying that Maelstrom was bad, but the demo didn't cut it for me. Tell me if the demo is worse than the actual game like most demos compared to their games are. Maybe I'm being to harsh and comparing to Company of heroes, I just can't stand an RTS game anymore that in the game, two forces will always have the same battle when you do it over. It makes the game unrealistic and boring to me, but I'm just one critic. ;) I would give it a 6/10. Sorry. :(

:o -It has it's faults (no EA budget too), but for everything that is wrong they did something right. My first love is the RTS, I think I have them all...and they are all the same, with the same issues. Even the "in a class of its own" SupCom, has failings that plague most RTSs. Maelstrom is ugly (yet detailed LOL) and rough to play (single-player is fantastic yet BUGGY!!!), but the mechanics/faction uniqueness vs. balance/innovative ideas (THAT ACTUALLY WORK!) are what make it great. If these people had EA money and none of the EA crew Maelstrom would have been the new Starcraft with ease.

-Analogy: Music; I have a friend that has...eccentric...music habits. Me and him like similar genres, but I can NOT listen to some of the crap he does. His music however, when dissected and analyzed is just a higher art than what I listen to. The difference is that I just want a song (CnC3), he wants something a little more that most people do not understand (Maelstrom).

-Analogy: Cartoons; I am a huge fan of Anime. People often give me a hard time about it. "Why do you watch these corny cartoons?", "Anime is for nerds that live in their parents basement", etc. From the outside a cartoon is a cartoon. From my point of view a cartoon is roadrunner(ftw) where it is fun to watch as something to do, there is no real story just a general theme and they crank out episodes like clockwork (CnC). Anime is something artists invest alot of time into. There are sub-plots, deep character developments, and meaning. An anime series is just an episodic movie, and was not meant for the casual viewer. (SupCom)

*inhale* ahhh

;) -I think my rant is showing again...AND IT IS OFF TOPIC NO LESS! sorry 'Gado

:) -On Topic...YEAH! EA SUCKS! YEAH, YEAH!!! BURN THEM!! CLEANS THEM WITH HOLY PROMETHIUM!!! WE DON'T NEED NO WATER LET THE...you get the point LOL :(

i think bf2 couldv'e been the best had they put sf,ef,af all in the package too,but but making them all seperate games shot them in the foot.2142 had some really great ideas i think if they were to focus on making a great game rather then making a could be great game but instead focus more on how much money they can sqeeze from us..who knows. But i can't say i haven't had some really great times with you all playing them ;)

Replayability is always a hard thing to work with. There aren't many games that can claim they have it.

There are some though, which developers should learn from. Even Diablo 1 & 2 are still being played in Korea so they must have done something right with those (for example).

I think the biggest problem is that they are so focused on eye candy that they forget about gameplay. IMHO, it's about gameplay first and eye candy second. I don't need cutting edge graphics if the game isn't fun to play...
