  1. The curtain has fallen, the computers are being packed, and DICE are on their way back to a beautiful Stockholm summer. Be sure that you have all the latest Battlefield 4 info as we take you behind the scenes in our look back at the fantastic E3 of 2013. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/BF4ate3-640x480.jpg Nice view of the Los Angeles Convention Center. We are committed to continue pushing Battlefield 4 even further, fueled by the amazing reception, energy, and excitement that the Battlefield community has expressed. E3 brought the reveal of multiplayer, Commander Mode, Spectator Mode, 64-player next-gen console combat, and introduced the concept of Levolution, allowing players to shape the Battlefield in game-changing ways. Take a tour in our multiplayer booth It’s one thing to play with 63 other people online, but to actually stand with them as you play? It’s amazing! Check out these pictures from the E3 showroom floor where we recorded the Battlefield 4 Multiplayer Live Stream. Commander interfaces, custom Battlefield 4 rigs, and dedicated Battlefield fans! http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/BF4-e32013-64-player-game-2.jpg Gamers got their first hands-on with 64-player Battlefield 4 multiplayer on the gloriously chaotic “Siege of Shanghai” map. Commander Mode announced Fan-favorite feature Commander Mode is back. Last seen in Battlefield 2, this highly requested feature is making its way to consoles, PC, and tablet computers. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/BF4-Commander-Battlelog.png Commander Mode is back — and works on tablets and mobiles this time around. This mode allows for a single player to be designated as the commander for each team with the power and responsibility to lead  their teammates to victory. And while the Commander’s role isn’t on the ground, they still possess abilities that allow them to turn the tide of a battle. Surveillance, vehicle deploys, and tactical airstrikes can all be found in a commander’s arsenal. As squads acknowledge, execute, and complete assigned objectives these increasingly powerful and deadly abilities will become available, meaning that teamplay is more important than ever. But perhaps the Commander’s most important and powerful asset is their ability to view the entire battlefield in a top-down tabletop mode. From this view they can assign teammates to objectives and strategically command forces to victory. Watch this video for a glimpse at how you’ll lead your troops into Battle, even while you’re away from your computer or console. 3 days of Battlefield 4 live streaming straight from our booth Can’t get enough Battlefield 4 Multiplayer? Check out these recordings from the E3 2013 Live Stream, featuring more than a dozen hours of 64-player, unscripted, per-alpha multiplayer gameplay. You’ll also enjoy interviews with DICE staff, expert commentators, and top-tier community members. Big thanks to our hosts Corey Dunn and Alex “GoldenboyFTW” Mendez for their amazing job at guiding our viewers through the game at E3. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/livestreamKM.jpg Corey Dunn (aka “Dunn”) interviews DICE’s Karl Magnus Troedsson in the opening section of our 3-day live stream straight from our multiplayer booth. The Battlefield 4 Live Stream was designed for Battlefield fans. We’re proud to say that over just three days it received 2.1 million views, making it the most viewed broadcast on Twitch.tv. We designed this special programming with you in mind, so don’t miss out! Head to http://www.battlefield.com/battlefield-4/e3-live-stream for full daily replays of our massive live streams! “Siege of Shanghai” multiplayer hands-on All-out War. Commander Mode. Levolution. Amphibious Assault. Frostbite 3. These concepts define the Battlefield 4 multiplayer experience. During our time at E3 we began to examine how each would impact Battlefield, continuing to set it apart as the leading online multiplayer shooter. This brief video, a five minute look at what will spark a billion hours of play, shows just some of the ways these ideas will change the way you play. “Angry Sea” single player reveal While many players will spend the majority of their time with Battlefield 4 playing with and against friends in multiplayer, DICE is committed to creating a single player campaign worthy of the Battlefield legacy that fans can be proud to claim as their own. Battlefield 4′s single player missions will change other way Battlefield fans look at a campaign through truly human characters, a dramatic arc that players can invest in, and unique, unforgettable challenges. But what truly sets Battlefield 4′s campaign apart from past entries is that players will need their multiplayer skills to succeed. By blending in traditional Battlefield multiplayer mechanics, the genuine fraternity of a squad forged through hours of play, and a focus on allowing players to choose how to accomplish their objectives, DICE has set the stage for a campaign as fittingly unique as any online match. See for yourself. Watch the “Angry Sea” trailer and, if nothing else, marvel at raw power and versatility of the Frostbite 3 engine in the hands of its creators. Spectator Mode announced We are happy to announce that the long requested Spectator Mode will definitely appear in Battlefield 4. While we knew that you’d be excited, we’ve been blown away by the response send attention this feature has received. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Matros-interviewed-by-Corey.jpg Producer Daniel Matros talks Spectator Mode with Corey Dunn. You can find this interview in the day 1 live stream recap over at http://bit.ly/1aayq8r (interview starts at 1h49mins) As a quick reminder, Spectator Mode (like Battlefield 4 itself) is still in pre-alpha stage. This means that we are still working on its design, implementation, and function so any of the content that you may see related to it is subject to change. Spectator Mode will play a pivotal role in our support of the competitive gaming scene, and we also recognize that many players will use it to make great “Only in Battlefield†videos, analyze the game, learn how to become better players, and seeing the “Only in Battlefield†moments in great Battlefield 4 matches. We are continuing to develop Spectator Mode with all of these functions in mind. You can read our in-depth recap of Spectator Mode at E3 here. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/sally.jpgThanks for tuning in, see you again soon! Thanks for tuning in during E3 2013. It’s been a blast. Stay tuned for more in-depth details on Battlefield 4 as we near the release of our biggest game yet. Let us know in the comments section below what you think about our E3 show, and don’t forget to vote in our E3 poll at the bottom of this post. See you on the Battlefield! Oh, and Sally says hi. 2. It’s been a long requested feature, and we are happy to announce that Spectator Mode will definitely appear in Battlefield 4! If you’ve watched our multiplayer live stream from E3, you’ve already seen an early version of it in action. In this post, we give you some added detail and answers to this upcoming feature. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/spectator2.jpg Battlefield 4 Spectator Mode was announced at E3. Here’s what the Spectator Mode HQ in the Battlefield 4 booth looks like. In our EA press conference on June 10 at E3, we announced that Spectator Mode would definitely be coming to Battlefield 4. The cheers from the crowd as we made the announcement was amazing — we knew you’d be excited, but we’ve been quite frankly blown away by the community response! Now, we’re here to answer your questions and give you some added detail about this core feature. First, one reminder: Spectator Mode (like Battlefield 4 itself) is still in pre-alpha stage. This means that we are still working on its design, implementation, and function. If you have already joined our multiplayer booth live stream from E3, you’ve already seen some amazing unedited “Siege of Shanghai” multiplayer gameplay and an early version of our Spectator Mode in action. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/spectator1.jpg For us, the proof is in the game, so we wanted to make sure we could share true 64-player match and a first glimpse of Spectator Mode. What we are showing at E3 is only a preview of what’s in store, though. Spectator Mode will play a pivotal role in our support of the competitive gaming scene, and we also recognize that many players will use it to make great “Only in Battlefield” videos, analyze the game, learn how to become better players, and seeing the “Only in Battlefield” moments in great Battlefield 4 matches. We are continuing to develop Spectator Mode with all of these functions in mind. We’ve still got a way to go before Spectator Mode is finished, but we knew that you would give us some of the most important feedback we could receive — that’s one of the reasons we love going to these shows. Below, we are addressing some of the questions and comments we’ve received on Spectator Mode so far. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/E3_MP_03_WM-small.jpg Battlefield 4 Siege of Shanghai Vertical Combat. Click for full size. Let us know what you think in the comments below. Tune in for the final day of live streaming with multiplayer action from our booth at E3 June 13! What’s up with the different colors on objectives and soldiers? The current implementation in Spectator Mode quickly helps spectators identify the two teams (one will always be blue, the other always red). This can be different from a gamer’s first-person view has a different and more granular color coding, where green means squad mate, blue is team mate, and red means enemy. We’re working to implement a color-coding system that will be both consistent and recognizable to bring continuity between matches. What is the yellow menu bar at the top of the Spectator Mode view? This is a placeholder design that will be changed in the final code. It will change based upon which player you are spectating in order to help give you instant perspective on the Battlefield. I saw some glitches in Spectator Mode — What is up with that? Large parts of Spectator Mode and Battlefield 4 itself are still in early development. It is inevitable that pre-alpha code will have some artifacts like this. The final product will be optimized, but we wanted to give you a first look at what we have in store for you. One of our main goals with showing Spectator Mode this early is to gather valuable community feedback, so please let us know what you think. Submit your feedback in the comments below or let us know what you think on the official Battlefield Twitter, Facebook, and Battlelog forums. One more day of Battlefield 4 live streaming coming up! Their impressions from the gameplay reveal will start to hit the Internet as you are reading this. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/close_640.jpg Bringing the best of multiplayer into single player Battlefield 4 is a seminal moment for the series and for us at DICE. We have long been known for our award-winning multiplayer. This time around, we are bringing the best elements of our multiplayer into the single player campaign. This means that gamers will experience huge environments, a playground of destruction, access to an arsenal of vehicles, and the ability to direct squad mates – all within the single player campaign. Battlefield 4 is our most human, dramatic, and believable game yet, powered with our proprietary Frostbite™ 3 engine. This is the engine that will let you own land, sea and air. Watch the 17-minute gameplay reveal You can view the staggering 17-minute “Fishing in Baku†demo above. The demo begins as the player – Recker – opens his eyes to discover that he is trapped in a rapidly sinking car with three of his squad mates. Shooting the window is the only way out. Panic and fear are pushed aside as Recker makes a difficult decision – take the shot and recover the intel but risk that not everyone will survive. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/crashsite_640.jpg Join the exclusive Battlefield 4 Beta We are also happy to announce the upcoming exclusive Battlefield 4 Beta. 15. With End Game comes the new game mode Air Superiority, letting you take part in epic 12 vs. 12 dogfights above four vast new maps. Learn all about the return of this fan favorite game mode below. Air Superiority is for players who want to engage in epic dogfights. It was first introduced in Battlefield 1943, and has been widely asked for in the community ever since. Now, we are happy to reintroduce it to old fans and newcomers to the Battlefield series alike. If you haven’t already viewed it, check out the End Game launch trailer below for a look at this new game mode. “Air Superiority is for playerswho want epic dogfights†We know that jets are some of the most loved vehicles in our games, and Air Superiority is a game mode that caters to hardcore and new pilots alike that want nothing more than to soar at high speeds and engage in massive dogfights. All pilots in this 24 player affair spawn in mid-air, leading to quick action and eliminating any concerns over jets being bombarded before they have a chance to take off. In fact, even though a skilled pilot will have use of his full range of tricks in Air Superiority mode, it’s also possibly the best place for a newcomer to rack up large amounts of air XP and get their first unlocks going. There will simply be too many juicy targets available to miss! http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/BF3_End_Game_Air-Superiority_03_small.jpgThe sky is full of targets in the new Air Superiority mode in Battlefield 3: End Game. As far as gameplay mechanics go, Air Superiority bears more than a resemblance to Battlefield’s classic Conquest mode, in that Air Superiority also sees teams fighting for majority control around a number of bases. But where Conquest naturally have land based capture points, the capture points in Air Superiority are blimps – three per map. As with Conquest, the team with the bigger presence around a majority of these capture points will cause the opposing team to bleed respawn tickets. Air Superiority in End Game is a bit more tactical in nature than its namesake from Battlefield 1943. This time around, you have more capture points to fight over – and the team winning a round in End Game is normally the team with the best ability to keep capture point ownership, as opposed to the team with the most kills. End Game will soon be out on all formats. When you’re ready to jump into the cockpit and take to the skies, make sure to bring these tips from Lead Designer Gustav Halling: “On Nebandan Flats, a very skilled pilot can weave in and out between the many wind generators to shake followers and locked-on missiles. Also, when flying from point A to B, follow the terrain closely to stay “below radar†and avoid being locked-on by enemy missiles.” This concludes the Road to End Game blog series. We hope you have enjoyed it. Battlefield 3: End Game is included at no extra charge with Battlefield 3: Premium and will be available for separate purchase. 17. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/BF3_EG_PC_front.jpgBattlefield 3: End Game brings the battle to four distinct environments featuring everything from arid desert landscapes to snowy mountain areas. Learn more about the map variety on offer below. Four distinct maps are on offer in End Game. Size-wise, they are comparable to Caspian Border and Operation Firestorm from the base game, while the flag layout resembles that in our previous expansion pack Armored Kill – Meaning that we have spaced the capture points and bases to make full use of the entire Battlefield. While all maps are carefully created to cater for the new dirt bike, the new AA vehicles should see heavy use on most of the maps as well. This new transport has a roof mounted turret that can switch between rockets and anti-air missiles to protect your infantry and combat air threats. OPERATION RIVERSIDE http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/End_Game_Operation_Riverside_Thumb1.jpg Internal working title: “XP5_001†or River†Supported game modes: Capture the Flag (NEW), Air Superiority (NEW), Conquest, Rush, Squad Rush, Team Deathmatch, Squad Deathmatch Distinguishing features: This fall themed map houses an electric power substation at its center, with a small river flowing along its axis. The layout of the bases in Operation Riverside caters somewhat towards infantry action rather than all-out vehicle warfare. It’s generally speaking an infantry-friendly landscape where soldiers can go by foot between the bases, while ground vehicles need to take more roundabout roads to traverse the environment. Across the river giving this map its name, players can find a spectacular jump in the form of a partly destroyed wooden bridge. A lot of other ramps have been carefully placed in the environment on Operation Riverside to make sure that the map is full of exciting options for riders of the new dirt bike. You can read more about the spectacular jumps in End Game in this previous blog post. NEBANDAN FLATS http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/End_Game_Nebandan_Flats_Thumb.jpg Internal working title: “XP5_002†or “Flats†Supported game modes: Capture the Flag (NEW), Air Superiority (NEW), Conquest, Rush, Squad Rush, Team Deathmatch, Squad Deathmatch Distinguishing features: In this arid desert dotted with gigantic wind generators lies a seemingly non-distinguishing warehouse. But behind its unassuming exterior hides a secret weapons and munitions depot, leading to a clash in the area. The relative openness of the desert setting allows for full freedom of movement for the entire range of vehicles at disposal in Battlefield 3 multiplayer. The low amount of natural cover available also demands quick transportation between capture points, as players are otherwise open to attack. KIASAR RAILROAD http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/End_Game_Kiasar_Railroad_Thumb.jpg Internal working title: “XP5_003†or “Railroad†Supported game modes: Capture the Flag (NEW), Air Superiority (NEW), Conquest, Rush, Squad Rush, Team Deathmatch, Squad Deathmatch Distinguishing features: This picturesque summer logging industry setting sees a strategic railway stretch across the map – with covert weapons deliveries being its main purpose. The many height changes in this undulating landscape can be used to your advantage – There’s plenty of opportunity to hide from the enemy and use cover as you approach your targets. While this map also has ample opportunity for dirt bike riders to catch big air, the jumps on Kiasar Railroad are typically more carefully molded into the landscape itself, or not as obvious. SABALAN PIPELINE http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/End_Game_Sabalan_Pipeline_Thumb.jpg Internal working title: “XP5_004†or “Pipeline†Supported game modes: Capture the Flag (NEW), Air Superiority (NEW), Conquest, Rush, Squad Rush, Team Deathmatch, Squad Deathmatch Distinguishing features: Ever since we demoed the Alborz Mountain map at GamesCom 2012 and saw the amazing fan reactions, we’ve known that snow is one of the most stunning settings we can provide in Battlefield 3. Sabalan Pipeline is no different. The oil pipeline traversing this frosty winter landscape has immense economic value and is a highly contested battlefield. Similar to Operation Riverside, Sabalan Pipeline was built to cater for a mix of vehicle and infantry gameplay. Compared to the other three maps in End Game, Sabalan Pipeline has fewer and narrower roads that are important to control if you want to dominate the opposition. At the center of this map lies a central base that is also an essential asset, as it allows you extended control over the road leading to and from your main bases.  This is equally important whether playing the signature Battlefield Conquest mode or our take on Capture the Flag that we are introducing in End Game. We’re excited to present our players with such a broad variety of environments to expand their Battlefield experience with come March. 18. We are re-introducing the classic game mode Capture the Flag to Battlefield players with End Game. In this in-depth post, learn all about how this high-speed flag hunt is the perfect fit for the all-new dirt bike. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/BF3_End_Game_CTF_Kiasar_Railroad_Water_Thumb.jpgOne of the new game modes in End Game is our unique Battlefield take on Capture the Flag. Click for full size. For seasoned first person shooter players, Capture the Flag is a classic game mode. Two teams fight for control over the enemy’s flag and need to capture it to score a point. Now, we are very happy to present our Battlefield take on this exciting mode in End Game – further broadening our range of available gameplay experiences. The all-new End Game dirt bike is without a doubt the star of this game mode. It’s the perfect getaway vehicle for when you’ve snatched the enemy flag and need to wheelie back to your home base. The addition of a passenger seat means you can have some protection while boosting away from your pursuers. “The new dirt bike is without a doubtthe star of Capture the Flag†The mission in Capture the Flag might sound deceptively simple: Hike from your starting base to the enemy base and capture their flag, then bring it home to score a point. The only problem is the enemy is trying to do the same to you – and if your own flag is no longer at your base, you are not allowed to score. This calls for a well-balanced mix of defense and lightning quick offense if you are to have a chance at scoring at all. Capturing a flag is instantaneous. Just run over it to snatch it, then make it back home to score. Recovering your own flag that an enemy has dropped is not so simple, though. Rather, it is similar to how you would capture a base in Conquest. There’s a timer ticking down once you are within capture radius, and the time it takes to recover the flag is directly affected by how many friendly soldiers you have in the flag’s capture radius. Once it’s recovered, it will be automatically placed back home in your base again. Once you’ve captured the enemy flag, it’s carried on the back of your infantry soldier or attached to your vehicle. While we love the fast and agile dirt bike, you will always have to weigh its speed against its low safety against enemy fire. If you would prefer a slower but more armored ride home, we’d recommend a jeep or tank instead – but whatever ride you choose, you will always be asked to make that judgment call whether speed or armor is your top priority at any given time. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/5_End_Game_Dirtbike-CTF_Jump_Water-640x378.jpgMake a quick getaway with the all-new dirt bike once you’ve snatched the enemy flag. Gameplay-wise, Capture the Flag  is highly dynamic with exactly two hot spots that can change at any time: The position of your home flag and the position of the enemy flag. For example, there’s no reason at all to hang back at your base if your own flag isn’t there anymore. You either protect your flag, snatch it back, or grab the enemy flag. Those are the only strategically sound actions you can take in a round of Capture the Flag. Coupled with the mobile nature of both flags, this means that firefights can suddenly erupt anywhere across the map and then suddenly change location again. We hope you will enjoy this new addition to the available Battlefield 3 game modes come March (If you’re an old-time Battlefield fan you might remember we also had Capture the Flag already in Battlefield 1942, available as a free download from Origin). Stay tuned for more in-depth blog posts on End Game in the weeks leading up to launch. Battlefield 3: End Game is out this March. 19. The dirt bike is one of the fastest and most agile vehicles ever in a Battlefield game. In this blog post, QA Analyst Malin von Matern explains how End Game became the perfect playground for this new and exciting ride. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/1_End_Game_Dirtbike_Ontheroad_Water-640x379.jpg Taking to the road in the March expansion pack Battlefield 3: End Game. Hey there, I’m Malin von Matern, QA Analyst at DICE. With the work of End Game in my rearview mirror, the motorcycle is – hands down – my favorite vehicle when it comes to quickly getting to where I want while still having a blast. When I have some time to spare I often boot up a level and see what I can make the motorbike do, just for fun. When the jumps started to take form on the four different End Game levels I wanted to make sure that they didn’t just feel randomly placed – but rather something that lived naturally within the maps and their gameplay. I wanted every single one of the jumps to feel authentic, fun and just a little bit crazy. Check out the video below where we had some dirt bike fun trying out a few of the jumps in our play test. The QA (Quality Assurance) Analysts at DICE are specialists that focus primarily on how the game plays and how everything fits together from a consumer’s point of view. In my position, I also help out polishing features and backtracking bugs to make sure we don’t redo old mistakes, along with – of course – helping out to eliminate the present ones. My work on the upcoming expansion End Game focused a lot on polishing and tweaking the motorcycle jumps that can be found across the levels. “I wanted every single one of the jumps to feel authentic, fun and just a little bit crazy†The first thing you might notice when playing the different levels is that the jumps on each respective level don’t always look the same. On Operation Riverside for example, the jumps are very clear and often made out of metal ramps supported by dirt piles, compared to Kiasar Railroad where the jumps are less obvious, molded with the landscape and often made out of wooden planks laid out on dirt mounds. This encourages players to explore the levels to see if they can find all the jump spots. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/End_Game_Operation_Riverside_Water-640x360.jpg Operation Riverside is one of four maps in End Game, and one that features a lot of rollercoaster style jumps tailored for the new and agile dirt bike. Each and every jump has been molded by hand to exclusively fit the area they are placed in. We worked in the mindset of carefully bringing the jumps into the flow of the map instead of trying to force them in where they don’t belong. From bump to jump When we created the jumps I worked very closely with the level artists and designers. The bigger jumps were often placed by one of them, while I later moved in and made sure the jumps were actually doable and just difficult enough to be enjoyable. Creating a well-designed and successful jump requires more than just making a bump in the ground or adding a random ramp to a prop. To create a jump that works as intended, you need to make sure you work with the physics engine in the right way, almost like when building a jump in real life. If the jump is too long or too steep you will lose speed and possibly fail the jump, or the jump will simply become dull and forgettable. Make the jump too flat and it will likewise lose its edge. “The jumps were carefully molded to keep that awesome rollercoaster feeling†Something I learned is that you want the jump to have a nice curve in order to simulate the g-forces that take place when pulling off jumps in real life. The curve also helps the motorbike keep its momentum all the way through the jump, giving you those epic “big air†moments. I have always liked watching downhill MTB videos, which is something I used to my advantage when working on the jumps in End Game to make them feel both epic and realistic. One good example of a jump that was close to impossible to make in the early stages of production was the double-jump formation on Operation Riverside. The jumps and the landing areas were misaligned, causing the player to crash and stop dead upon landing. The river in that area was also unforgivingly deep at the time, which caused players to lose their bikes if they ended up falling short. After a few hours of work though, the jumps were shaped into what they are today – carefully molded to keep that awesome rollercoaster feeling, while still being smooth and possible to pull off. The smaller jumps were often spawned out of prototypes of some crazy “what if†ideas, where I often discussed with the different level artists about where I thought a jump would be fun to have. Many of them were cut – like one crazy idea where you would jump over one of the helicopter pads in the US base in one early version of a level – but a few of them can still be found in the game. Quality jumping One thing that is very easy to forget when building a jump is that it’s more than just the time you spend in the air. It’s a combination of several things: the approach, the jump and the landing. If you don’t give the player enough information about the jump on the approach, it’s easy to misalign the jump and end up crashing into a rock or a tree. An example of this is the problem we had with the mega jump on Operation Riverside mentioned earlier. When players came up on the second jump while approaching from the Russian side of the river, many ended up crashing straight into the rock wall. The reason this happened was because the jump itself blocked the players’ view, forcing them to guess the correct alignment for the jump. Even those who had taken the same jump several times still made the same mistake, including myself, regardless of the hours I’d spent tweaking it. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/1-2.jpg Death trap (left) avoided by careful placement of tree as visual marker (right). http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/2-2.jpg Same death trap as above, this time from a 1P view. The way I solved this was to give the player a subconscious guide away from the rocky mountainside. I placed a tree between the jump and the wall, high enough so that its top branches were visible over the tip of the jump, as a natural indication that there was an obstacle just out of sight. And what I soon noticed was that almost everyone that tried the jump after the change succeeded on their first try. What I personally love with solutions like this is that whenever I run the jump myself, I rarely actually think about the tree being there. I just automatically steer away from it when approaching the jump. It’s little details like this that often make the difference between failure and success and it’s fascinating to see the effects they have on player behavior. One thing that’s important to remember is that apart from spending a lot of time having a go at all the jumps yourself, you also need the opinion of others. I often handed control to colleagues or simply walked around in the studio during playtests to see how different players used the bike and what complications they ran into when attempting jumps. Getting feedback from others is the best way to know if the tweaks you are doing are working as intended. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/4_End_Game_Dirtbike_Ramp_Water-640x379.jpg Caution: Mid-air collisions with other dirt bikes can be hazardous to your health. Defy the sky gods While the two most jump heavy maps are Operation Riverside and Kiasar Railroad, the other two maps – Nebandan Flats and Sabalan Pipeline – rely more on using the skills you have learned on the constructed jumps on the raw terrain. I have personally had lots of “Battlefield Moments†during playtests on these maps. My knowledge of what I can make the motorbike do has saved my skin more than once. So don’t be fooled if you have a hard time spotting jumps on those maps. They are there, just a bit more hidden. My personal pro-tip to you guys and gals out there would be this: The way you approach a jump and what you do just before you hit the air can drastically change the way you jump. That’s good to know for those times when you don’t want to over shoot a jump and you need a more controlled landing. The times you just want to do that big jump and spend some quality time with the birds, don’t touch the boost (which lets you do a wheelie on your bike) until you hit the last two to three meter line away from the tip of the jump. This will help give you a nice kick away from the ground and definitely send you flying. Another thing that’s worth mentioning is that passengers won’t add any weight to your bike, so you and your buddies can freely jump together! Be careful when boosting with a passenger on the back of the bike, though, as you are actually blocking that player’s aim in case you run into any enemies along the way. I personally hope that when all of you get out there and get your hands on the motorbike for the first time you will have as fun as I had while building the jumps. I also hope that both the jumps and the bikes themselves will help you find new ways to fight all across the Battlefield. Game on, have fun, and I’ll meet you on the Battlefield! 20. Our fifth expansion pack End Game is looming ever closer. In this first in-depth reveal we detail the overall scope of this massive themed expansion pack – bringing speed and agility to the Battlefield and introducing the all-new dirt bike. All-new fast and agile dirt bike When building End Game, high-speed warfare was our mantra. Nothing illustrates this better than the new fast and agile dirt bike, that lets you take a friend to the frontlines at high speed while doing wheelies and quick stops. It’s a true two-wheel vehicle with its own physics engine that is a perfect fit for our returning game mode Capture the Flag. We have hidden a lot of cool jumps for you on all maps that you can attempt if you need a quick getaway in a daredevil fashion. The dirt bike is clearly the star among the new vehicles in End Game, and we will return shortly with an in-depth blog post focused solely on this agile and versatile addition to the ever-growing Battlefield vehicle line-up. Call for reinforcements with the new dropship But that’s not all. You can also jump into the seat of two new AA vehicles or use the new dropship to call in reinforcements or parachute in behind enemy lines. The AA vehicles is the first time in Battlefield 3 that a troop transport has been fitted with a roof mounted AA turret in addition to a rocket launcher, effectively making it able to defend against both ground and air vehicles. The dropship gets awarded to whatever team holds the central flag in Conquest mode and lets you drop in an additional Infantry Fighting Vehicle by parachute, forcing the enemy to keep close tabs on your position or risk being overrun. Fight all year around End Game contains four vast and varied maps, each inspired by one of the four seasons. If there’s something our line of expansion packs have shown, it’s how many different flavors of combat Battlefield 3 can cater for. From the classic gameplay of Back to Karkand to the tight infantry combat on Close Quarters and massive all-out vehicle warfare of Armored Kill – we love to give our fans new experiences while staying true to the Battlefield core. By making each map distinctly unique, End Game serves as a beautiful reminder of the broad range of vistas we can deliver with the Frostbite 2 engine, and how the environment influences gameplay in subtle ways. From the beautiful fall-themed Operation Riverside, with its many rivers and electrical sub-stations, to snowy Sabalan Pipeline, End Game brings all of your favorite settings into one tight package. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/EndGameKeyArt.jpg The return of Capture the Flag and Air Superiority Capture the Flag is a classic multiplayer game mode for anyone interested in shooters, and it was actually part of the original Battlefield 1942 released more than 10 years ago. End Game marks the first time in a decade that Capture the Flag returns to the Battlefield, and we think it’s a perfect fit with the new theme of high-speed warfare and mobility that the dirt bike brings to the game. Stay tuned for an in-depth look at our Battlefield version of Capture the Flag in a later blog post in this series. Also new for End Game is the jet-based Air Superiority game mode where players can take part in massive dogfights, much like when this game mode first appeared in Battlefield 1943. If you’re a Premium member, you can watch an exclusive video right now featuring extended gameplay from Air Superiority mode. Just head to the Battlelog Premium videos section to check it out. We will return with in-depth Air Superiority information later in this blog series, so stay tuned for that. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/airsupthumb.jpg Like all of our themed expansion packs, End Game is more than â€just mapsâ€. Apart from the new vehicles, Capture the Flag and Air Superiority modes, we are also packing it with new Assignments, dog tags, Achievements/Trophies, and more. Join us here on the Battlefield Blog for more breaking news on End Game up until the launch this March.
