  1. I have checked the FCC regs on it and from what I can tell as long as I dont go over about 2 watts I should be fine. From reading some charts I should be able to use a fraction of that to shoot up to 8 miles. I have been looking at cable that has a lost of less than .25db per foot. So I would most likely drill straight down. Roof 1 is around 30ft high and I dont think there is much obstruction between the two so maybe 4 foot on top of the building would be tops. I will know for sure when I get my GPS on both locations and check the topo map. If there is a hill or large home in they way I am just going to scrap the idea.

  3. I am planning on doing most of all that, but not sure about the SSID turning off. Sometime it is hard to get your links up at along distances with that off.

  15. most of the stuff like airsnort require linux. Even though they could spoof a mac I dont think they would bother trying to get around both for a simple home connection. I wasnt sure if the 128 had been broken or not.

  17. Oh one other thing.....from and 8 degree beam how much would it spread at that distance? Just wondering how much security to put on it. Was thinking maybe 128 bit WEP, MAC filtering, but I wasnt sure about turning off SID at that distance..?How long you think it would take to airsnort that 128 bit?If all else fails I could try hooking up a 14.4 modem to some tin cans and string...you know an Alabama LAN....lol

  19. Ok here is the deal-eo my sister is getting DSL at her business but it is not going to be offered at her home. Her home is like ~2 miles away. I have played around with some long range stuff but nothing quite this far. I have been reading about people using home made antennas to shoot a wifi signal 10 miles and some college guys did an 80 mile shot from two mountains. What I was wondering is if anyone here has a background in this and could tell me if I am spinning my wheels. I have looked at some sites and got a lot of formulas to calculate my angles/tilts/power/curve of the earth....ect. I *think* at anything under 10 miles earth curve should be negligible....right? Basically what I was planning on doing was getting some altitude calculation and looking up the area on a topo map then trying to decide how high I was going to have to raise the antenna. I am thinking for 2 miles 30 feet (top of the building) and then maybe 10 feet at her home should be enough. The two antenna I have picked out are directional 24db gain with a 8 degree beam. Not sure how much loss for cable yet but I am going to try to keep it down. My power from the linksys WRT54G would be around 15 dbm but I can adjust between 0-84mw of power with my new firmware.. This by no means is going to be optical line of sight but I am wondering if the high gain antenna should help me over come some basic trees and other such obstruction and still keep me around 60% fresnel-zone? I am trying to keep this low budge and in FCC standards also btw...so I have pretty much ruled and amp out. Here is some of my pages I have been researching....Thanks for ANYONE who can give some help. http://www.ilmukomputer.com/berseri/onno-wifi/html/ch-11-radio-link-calculation.htm http://hyperlinktech.com/web/hg2424g.php http://www.ydi.com/calculation/fresnel-zone.php http://www.ydi.com/calculation/som.php And for the real low cost option! http://www.wwc.edu/~frohro/Airport/Primestar/Primestar.html For other interesting info about long distance wifi http://palmtops.about.com/b/a/049175.htm http://palmtops.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://classes.weber.edu/wireless/
  20. yep without a steamid you have NOTHING. That is not the real ClaymoreCarl he was playing with us tonight on our POE server. I also have him on Xfire and he hasnt even played FA in months. If you will give the STEAMID we will take care of the ban but I can tell you it is not our REAL ClaymoreCarl just by looking at the name.I would almost bet you it is a guy named Never Surrender.Since that is your server give us the IP and Steam and we will help you in anyway possible track down the trouble maker and his real ID.
  21. We better get this in the news.
  22. opppsI have SP2 and havent seen a problem yet. Not sure what to tell you....I will research this more. I havent seen a big help by going to SP2 so if you dont just feel that you need it I wouldnt get it right now.
