We're patient Gator. if you need any help, just give a call, i'll be glad to be a guineepig [off topic] hey defcon... where did you get that bomb-disarm suit? i had to test one of those a couple of years ago (no, not by disarming a bomb, though the manufacturer does that himself!)

firearms 2.5 server
Okay, i just got informed by -=[DW]=-SirCampalot that you guys intend to play on our Oldskool server on friday night. As always you all are very welcome to do so!! There is however a small tweak which you'll have to perform before you can find the server. After the instalation of Fireams 2.5, go to that directory under steam and find the Liblist.gam file. Open it with notepad (or any oder plain text editor) and edit the following line: game "Firearms" to game "Firearms 2.5" and save the file again. This not only enables you to have 2.5 sitting in steam next to 2.9 (if you renamed your fa2.9 folder to firearms29 BEFORE you installed 2.5 that is, else it'll be overwritten), it will also enable you to find the server, as i edited the same line in the servers liblist as well. Last but not least, i don't have a clue to how many people this mail was sent.... but the server is currently only using 30% of it's resources.. with 2 FA servers and a DC-F server running. Now i will be away on Friday, and so will -=[DW]=-Painboy who administrates the server with me, but i'll increase the number of slots (if Mac would be kind enough to tell me how many ppl got his invitation that would be a great help) to any conveiniant amount so you guys can have a good time. Adminmod is running, so the "rockthevote" command should be able to satisfy your map needs. Several -=[DW]=- members have admin power but i'll consider adding some members of the TAC counsel as well (i talk this over with Sir Campalot) so you guys can have a fun night. I just wished my father in law wouldn't celebrate his birthday on fridaynight ... sigh!

footage from Fallujah
I disagree.... to a point. Now, when technology is as much part of the war as the man who wields it, sure, there is no honor in fighting. This method is too unpersonal, too dishonorable, one and hes enemy have not equal chances. Its plain butchery - a matter of who killes more. Who kills more people without names, nameless puppets. One shouldnt be concerned about them, shouldnt see them as humans, breathing, living beings, but a stray dogs, that only use for them is to be slain. Thats the view on war for last 100 years, but it started 200 - 300 years earlier (mostly with gunpowder warfare revolution). Before those honorless times, there was a time that people were fighting honorably in a meaning, that they stood man-to-man, clashed their weapons physically and the better one won. Not the one who had better technology behind him, but skill, bravery and sometimes luck. THAT was honorable fighting. Each warrior gave another a chance of winning by facing him in a fight/duel. Ky...I'm talking today. To the hundreds of vets I've counseled who have been in battle, they say, not me, but they say technology does not make killing impersonal. They still see the body parts, the smell of burnt flesh, maggots, on and on. Death is death no matter how it is achieved. As for honor, well, again, the vets I talk to don't give a *edit* about that. It is an abstract imaginary feeling. It quickly disappears when the brutality of death hits the fan. Not one vet, NONE, I have spoken with talk about honor. To them it is a misnomer by people who have not experienced first hand the hell of combat. I agree Gator! I have to agree as well. Though i fortunately have not seen war, i have seen cities destroyed by disasters as member of a rescuedog team. seemingly random death changes one for life. "Choosing" to end someone others life must be even harder to live with, especially if you carry the image with it for life. That has nothing to do with honour, it's all about pain and trauma. Pls respect those who are suffering from this so we can live our untroubled lifes. Visions, sounds and smells of destruction can not be erased from one's mind, it is haunting you forever. It can be managed by counseling/ therapy, but please do not say you want these kind of experiences to be reproduced as good as possible in games. In my opinion that is a lack of respect.

Half-Life 2 Street Date Broken (News comment)
There are several ppl who indeed claim they were able to buy HL2 in stores. However, those stores broke the streetdate, not Valve. So it comes down to stores selling a game which you can't play right now. We all will have to wait untill the 15th/16th, thanks to steam (the game requires online registration by steam before one can play it). In the steam forums several people whine about not being able to play the boxed version, but the general opinion is: whine at your store, as they broke the agreement on the release date. Now on the subject of Valve releasing it earlier when the streetdate was broken.... there is only one written statement like that. And it's not made by Valve, but some reporter of an article. So i wouldn't bet my money on Valve releasing it earlier. Due to the instalation/activation of HL2 (be it boxed or steam edition) it is not possible to play it before the dateand time set by valve (unless someone hacks a steam server).

HL2 question
If you want to play HL2 (which will be enabled on the 15th/16th depending on your timezone) i advise you to preload it, that way it'll be ready to start as soon as it's set free. If you're only keen on playing online, i recommend you don't preload HL2, as it already takes up more than 3 gig on my hd

DC:f problem
yup, like deathtrip said, DCF is kind of like a mini-mod. so install DC0.7 first, then install DC-Fif it still happens to crash, you might take a look at your graphics settings as BF is happy only when it runs in default screen modes. to override this:1. Find the Mods folder in your BF1942 program folder.2. Go into Mods\bf1942\Settings3. Open the file VideoDefault.con with a text editor (like notepad.exe)4. Change the parameter 'renderer.allowAllRefreshRates' so that the value is '1' instead of '0'. this makes the game use all available resolutions and refresh rates for the intro's and menus

new soundcard
the problem is that some pci soundcards still use CPU number crunching to get the sound right. you will get a slight fps improvement if you buy a card which solves all the calculation by itself, instead of relying on the CPU. So try and find a recent soundcard test in which they also tested CPU use. i know there was one a couple of months ago in a dutch pc magazine, so if you can't any online, pls pm me and i'll try and find it and type out the results

I dunno how to comment this one...
hehe They abolished military service in the Netherlands approximateley 12 years ago. Every 18-year old had to get his physical examination and then it was a draft among those who came through. It was abolished in the end, because 1 out of 10 got drafted, and usually among the 9 others there were enough volunteers who didn't get picked, so there were a couple of lawsuits and they decided it was unfair to those who got drafted yet had better things to do (like start with university/ jobs etc)However, i know i'm addicted (physically!) to internet gaming, yet my professor wants to send me to Canada for several weeks of training/education. Does anyone think i will complain about it like these Fins did? Hell no, i'll go through the "cold turkey" because it will enrich me with the experience of meeting new people and learn me to live without the inet for several weeks. New experiences should always be tried, not avoided

I need some good wallpaper
if your a science fan: how bout this one, it's a Z-machine, a device used for research in nuclear fusion. They made the picture using a time-lapse camera, i got this one as one of my 6 kde desktops (the others are from the redhead gallery, won't place them here , though they are still decent, much like old fashioned pin-ups) http://www.sandia.gov/media/images/jpg/Z02.jpg RAW POWER: Electrical discharges illuminate the surface of the Z machine, the world's most powerful X-ray source, during a recent accelerator shot. By early 1998, the Sandia National Laboratories accelerator had achieved temperatures of 1.8 million degrees, close to the 2 to 3 million degrees required for nuclear fusion. In the last 18 months, breakthroughs have enabled the machine to increase its power output roughly seven times. (Photo by Randy Montoya)

Oh No i broke my headset
hell, and if it's "damaged beyond repair", why not try and cut open the other box as well? all you would need for soldering is .25 inch of bare wire to attach the new cable to

Oh No i broke my headset
hey one, don't worry, it's easy to do i know, cause i've replaced the jack on my sennheiser for at least 3 times already (it's got an "ike-proof" steel jack now) you can open the plastic ball if you need to, because it will make it easier to extend the mic wire to it's original length again by inserting a bit (with a new jack on one end) which has the right length. if you want it to look neat afterwards, don't forget to first put some shrink mantle like stuff over the wire before you start on the extension (it's a round tube which shrinks down to 1/3 or 1/4 of it's diameter when you heat it).
