January 18, 200818 yr Touche'' date='[/color'] first of all. I'm mainly bringing up things for discussion, because this kind of thing is interesting to me. Now to address the part I've quoted. As you and I both know, there are plenty of accidents with officers on the side of the road, and that's pretty much OFF the road. The way I see it, it'd be much more risky to have them in the middle of the road. Perhaps I'm being naive. Sorry was just answering a question.
January 19, 200818 yr It is unfortunate, Joe, that vehicles do not stop instantly. Beyond that, what all becomes inoperational? There's a distinct risk of having the brakes fail with such a device and I think a criminal who can't control his vehicle is much more dangerous than a criminal that can. its no joke its its real, check out future weapons on tlc.com one elecrto blast and the whole car is disabled, pretty cool technology. :klinked:
January 19, 200818 yr its no joke its its real, check out future weapons on tlc.com one elecrto blast and the whole car is disabled, pretty cool technology. :klinked: Well, as cool as Futureweapons can be, it's also been known to lie, or give half-truths. In the case of Dragonskin, for example, the grenade test was an obvious fail, but they treated it like it wasn't. With the HK416 or whatever, they didn't submerge the weapon underwater all the way, nor did they put it in sand with the dust cover open. Regardless, it is pretty interesting technology, I just think there are safer ways to end a chase.
January 19, 200818 yr As vehicles rely more and more on electronics, such a device is POTENTIALLY dangerous. Is letting a car coast to a stop any safer than the precision immobilisation technique? Does the EMP effect other vehicles nearby? Is having a vehicle stopped in the middle of the road safe at all? And what happens when they don't hit a wall, but hit a pedestrian instead? Better to just track the vehicle as was linked in another thread and just let them think they've gotten away. It's much safer than disabling the vehicle in any way, shape, or form. __________________ Back on topic, I actually am really curious to see if they use these here, because I'm interested in seeing what it feels like (though I don't care to do anything illegal to find out ). Its not EMP though, its a concentrated electrical burst applied to the vehicle itself Same principle as a Tazer is a direct electrical shock applied to a person, there is no effective EMP generating device that wouldnt vaporise everything within 5miles (ie a nuclear device).. It pains me to say, 2fast 2furious, is quite accurate when they demonstrate this "electical disabling" of the vehicle.. Consider this working in the same way as simply turning off the ignition of the vehicle when you are driving along.. cause thats effectively how it works. Secondly, the car manufacturers know full well (and the japanese have an written agreement) never to take physical control of the ability to stop away from the driver.. whilst the gas pedal might be a "fly by wire" device, the brakes, simply because of their basic mechanism, never will be. There may be devices that assist braking (ESP on volkswagens, ABS, Emergency stop assists etc) but never one that takes the actual physical link between master cylinder on pedal, and calipers, away from the user.
January 20, 200818 yr thats so freakin cool it would be cool to feel so who wants to rob a bank with me!

January 21, 200818 yr You'll never get to hear it Chippy. (A) Your K-car wanna-be doesn't go fast enough to outrun the standard siren, and ( without a stereo in your car any more, there's no noise to overcome.
