Posted August 3, 20169 yr I am starting to feel like it's high time I do some password changing, but if there is anything I hate more, it's going to all the different websites or logins I have and trying to remember everything and all the different passwords. Most of the time I have to do a security input and get password resets, that's basically my whole life, password resets. I use the same password across several websites and even have same username. I know I'm asking for trouble especially seeing I do so much buying, selling, and general financial activity online. I'm afraid to try password apps, how secure are those? I can come up with good passwords. I use the passphrase method. For example, using the second letter of 'tHe rAin iN sPain fAlls mAinly oN tHe pLain' converts into the password hanpaanhl, and to beef it up more, capitalize the 3rd letter, replace the p with a symbol and replace h with the number 4, the password becomes 4aN|aan4l. Ok great, now I have an awesome password, let me go and use this on all my logins. So what if a website gets hacked and now has my shiny new awesome password and because I use the same username everywhere, it makes everything so vulnerable. I don't think I can remember a separate passphrase for each and every login, I can barely remember what I'm supposed to do Saturday morning. How do you deal with passwords? I don't want to be like Francis
August 3, 20169 yr I use different but similar passeword, and i have a phonebook and i write login/pw/security question in it for each website. so if i forgot, check in that.
August 3, 20169 yr I use iforget as my password. Also not4u2know and omgwutsmypassword. poor Francis
August 3, 20169 yr I've used Roboform for years, and depend on it daily. Roboform is an application based password manager, although there are other web based password managers that work as well. PC Magazine Top Password Managers Because of my gaming habits, and maintaining the website, I have about more than 250 accounts and passwords. They are all different for the most part. A password manager is a must have for me.
August 3, 20169 yr I use random.org to generate 10-14 numbers (each 1 - 40 (26 letters, 9 numbers, !.@#$)) and then I build a password from there. e.g. 1 = A, 2 = B, 27 = 0, 36 = !. Completely random as far as I'm concerned and I try to do this every 90 days for all my accounts.
August 3, 20169 yr I have eight different passwords for work that have to be changed every 30 days. I just use a word and change the numbers at the end of it. Keeps it easy to remember.
August 5, 20169 yr Here is my input on passwords. https://xkcd.com/936/ https://xkcd.com/792/ A complicated password like C6-BYs$v7p is not better than MyDogIsTheCutestOne. And 2nd one is much easier to remember. Having a pattern to your passwords like MyDogIsTheCutestOneTblue. T for twitter and blue for color of twitters logo is not a bad idea. But ultimately I recommend having some password saving utility. Ones I can recommend are LastPass and PasswordSafe. With these utilities you only need to remember your master password and then generate passwords (or phrases) for each service. I firmly believe you should have a different password for EVERY service/website. But if you cant, NEVER NEVER use your e-mail password anywhere else! This is one way people's Origin/Steam/Bank/Payapl accounts get compromised! As for how often to change your password? Well if it's secure and only used for that one service, why change it? Only change passwords if a breach has happen. Changing passwords often makes you no safer and more acceptable to phishing attempts. So only change it when you have been compromised. Lastly, remember that Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer save your passwords as plain text by default. This means any person that can walk up to your PC and steal your passwords. So careful next time a browser prompts you save your password, maybe you don't want it to. I've proven this point at LAN's. I walked up friend's PC and with single command I typed in Windows Run menu copied their passwords to my desktop.... and then logged into their e-mail.
