An Open Letter to Alexander Hassoon, Rent-A-Server Producer

Featured Replies

Well apparently as a hardcore PC player, I am not smart enough to switch to a different server if I don't like the one I am currently in.

This is total Fracking bullshit. Already twitted Al Soon on this.

I will make this official. BF1 is the last video game from DICE  that I will ever buy. Unless they change, I am done with them.

Well Axel we are talking about you ya know.  ;) Sorry man had to . It was there for the taking and I couldn't resit. I know you have the blackass over this and I shouldn't poke da bear but sometimes I cant help myself. I'll try and do better in the future.

Here is mine - https://forums.battlefield.com/en-us/discussion/61820/my-letter-back-to-alexander-coming-soon-hasson-from-a-hardcore-pc-player/p1?new=1

Hi,

My name is Alexander Hassoon and I’m the Producer on the Rent-a-Server program in Battlefield 1. I wanted to take some time to talk to you about what we have in store for it in in the near future.

Firstly, I need to cover some history! In previous Battlefield titles, Rent-a-Server was handled in-game on console by EA while PC was handled outside the game client by third-party providers. This setup gave PC server admins a large amount of control on the game server but often at the cost of the overall player experience. The console server admins had very little control, but the player experience was very similar to playing on official servers. We all remember how as a player you would end up on a server that did not allow certainly gameplay elements and you would be kicked or banned immediately by accidentally using one of the restricted items!

If I wanted the console experience, I would have bought a console for $500 instead of spending $2500 on a gaming rig. That is the great experince about gaming on PC, The customizations that are available plus better sound quality and graphics. If I don't like the experience in one server, I can choose to go play in another server to more my liking. Most servers clearly placed there rule sets for all to read. It was those banned and kicked players trying to ruin the experience and not the other way around. Players need to learn to read what they are joining first. Suffer the consequences second. Ignorantia juris non excusat or ignorantia legis neminem excusat (Latin for "ignorance of the law excuses not" and "ignorance of law excuses no one" respectively) is a legal principle holding that a person who is unaware of a law may not escape liability for violating that law merely because he or she was unaware of its content.

So the challenge we set to ourselves at DICE was as follows - How can we increase admin control levels while not sacrificing the player experience? by ruining the PC experience

We started by implementing PC Rent-a-Server to the Battlefield 1 game client with the release of the Nov 15 patch. It was a very tough call to make but we felt it had to be done to offer a consistent experience for all players and allowed us control of the admin options there are. You can rent it but you can not control it. Play it the DICE way or not at all.

We added a lot of customization options that were not natively available in the game client before, features such as Class Restrictions, Weapon Class Restriction and Explosives Restrictions. Server admins in Battlefield 1 can now control all these options while the players won’t be punished for using them by mistake. And made it impossible for anyone to find the server!

So what does the future hold for the Rent-a-Server program in Battlefield 1? Very short game life span except for trolls that want to make racial slurs, pick on players sexuality, and poke fun of people religion and politcal beliefs as well as let cheaters run rampaent ruining the gaming experience.

We will continue working on adding more features and tools as well as a bunch of other cool stuff which we aren’t quite ready to talk about just now. just insert ther standard dice phrase "it's coming soon" here.

We see the Rent-a-Server program in Battlefield 1 very much as a live service that will evolve over time based on your feedback, so keep it coming as we hear you loud and clear. Make a lot of complaints and maybe things will change but don't count on it. We are so far behind on putting out the next failure of a game we might not have time to fix this one.

Sincerely

Alexander “Striterax” Hassoon Thanks for the update and letting the PC community know that we are now the red headed step children in the gaming world? DICE sounds a lot like activision now!

It honestly blows my mind that he is convinced more options for server administrators equals a worse experience for regular users. Just... wow. I'm hoping that is just the way he was told to spin this from a PR standpoint, and that he didn't actually join a server that kicked him for using explosives and instantly decided admins should not have any power.

How hard is it to switch to another server? Did that experience ruin said game for him forever? I mean really?

Of course some morons are going to abuse the power of their admin privileges... but who gives a shit? They pay for that server that they are turning into a ghost town. More power to them. Giving communities less options is not the answer to that issue.

I can already see the next Battlefield title (after the interim title that should be a mod and nothing more <looks at BFH>) only allowing quickmatches. That'd make this my last BF purchase.

Well its plain they are wanting to consolidate the codebase as much as possible when it comes to servers. IMHO this is a mistake and will bite them in the ass in the long run but by then they will have lost any trust and loyalty the PC community may have had for them and that group won't come back. Were a persnickety group to say the least. I understand it makes good sense business wise in the short term but what I'm seeing is a lack of seeing the big picture.

PC sales are the smallest segment of the game sales and that is all they see. What they do not take into account is why. With BF4s issues, and the abortion that was Hardline, ok it was fun for a bit but stood no chance of being as big as any of the other BF titles, many and I do mean MANY of the BF players simply opted to hold off on their purchase of BF1 to see how it shook out. They got some sales after what I considered a pretty damned solid launch but there is a whole segment out there who are still in the wait and see mode

Yes PC players are older and have disposable income to throw at upgrades, software titles, etc unlike the 500 buck console crowd but were as older players we also are mature enough not to throw cash at everything that comes down the pipe. Titanfall was one that I just didn't like. I played the open beta /Stress test and while it was fun enough I just don't dig Sci Fi shooters so I took a pass on it. Maybe star citizen will change that if it ever gets close enough to release for me to deem it worthy of checking out but I doubt it unless there are people I game with that are playing it.

Honestly, THIS is what Alli, et al , need to realize. Player communities make or break the game end of story. I never played BF after I got out of the service due to some PTSD issues and feared it may either trigger them or make them worse. A buddy of mine, former Marine who was in Somalia and Desert Storm, who played BF assured me it wouldn't and got me to try it. It has actually helped me deal with some of my issues so needless to say the players and communities are what makes the game. The title itself is only a platform that those bonds are formed within and once formed they tend to move from title to title as the playing field changes.

Yeah but at least they are letting us know they are having a meeting about improvements. This is a step forward.
Totally agree. Im just hoping they listen to the community of admins/mods who have been offering, in fact near begging, to aid them in the task. If it were me, I would look at the input and choose a group of the semi literate sounding folks and form a group and have online meetings to discuss things and work on the issues. That's just me though. Not sure if they can legally for liability reasons do that though as these people would then be acting as agents of the company and have to fall under the legal umbrella of DICE / EA. Not sure if a waiver would cover it and of course they people involved would need to sign NDA clauses etc etc. Not sure they would see the expenditure of legal resources worth the return. Who knows. Could add them into the Game Changer program I guess.
WOW DICE must have had a rough weekend. They have all hands on deck answering questions. Even Tiggr (Dave Siriland). Twitter, forums, all of them. The must have gotten the cloak of secrecy lifted. They just told the PS4 pro compalints to give them a video because DICE does not see anything broken. If you want questions answered, today seems to be the day to ask.

I saw that on twitter. Like I've said, we take 2 steps forward and 10 steps back wards
