Alright, there's been this big problem going on for quiet some time now, and it could jepordize PEI's (Prince Edward Island's) biggest industry.

Last year, there were these seiners from New Brunswick (seiners are really big fishing boats for you city folks) that got the bright idea that "Hey! PEI has loads of herring, why don't we just fish over there?" Fortunatly, there was the fishing boundries to stop them from fishing PEI's precious herring resource. Then, they got another bright idea. Why don't we fish just outside the boundries. It's not like the herring follow these boundries, so we can just catch the ones coming out."

So, they did this, and all the fisherman from PEI got really angry. An investigation was started, and it showed that the NB seiners WERE floating inside the boundries, fishing our herring. So, they were told to Cease and Desist and they did, or...kind of. They simply just moved outside the boundries again.

But, here's the kicker. Instead of going to their own docks way over in NB, they come to our docks here on PEI, and worse, the Souris wharfs on the Eastren tip of PEI. Souris is a small town, with the largest wharf around. Last year, when they came into the wharf, every was kind of in a slight shock. It was almost like a slap really. Coming into the Souris wharf was like saying, "We're stealing your stuff and you can't do nothing about it."

So, soon enough, shock turned the anger, and I think it was around the fifth time they came into the wharf, they were met with a nasty surprise. The fishermen had gathered on the wharf and when the seiners started loading their catch into the trucks, a mini-riot broke out. Not the kind where the throw rocks and stuff, but like a massive sweeping crowd of screaming, angry, fishermen.

Riot police were called in, and with their shields, pushed back the angry crowd (which consisted of 40 year olds and up). After that, fishermen started blocking the trucks from leaving the wharf by lying down in the road, then standing around, drinking coffee in on the road that led into the factory or something like that (a place where they take the fish after being caught). The trucks must've been waiting there for at least an entire day as police tried to move the crowd, but the crowd wasn't doing anything wrong, they were hanging around, drinking coffee (Tim Hortons Double Double?)

Anyway, the fishing season ended, and everyone gave a sigh of relief, hoping they wouldn't come back next year.

This year's fishing season started around Oct 20th. The seiners came in on the 24th with a full load. They were met by just a small crowd of fishermen. The fishermen went to our premier, Patt Bins, and asked him to do something about these seiners. Patt said he'd have a conversation with the NB premier and they'd work something out. This 'conversation' came and went without much change. The NB premier said they were doing nothing wrong. But everyone knew this was totally wrong. PEI fishermen had been reporting since the start of this fishing season about seiners fishing inside the boundries. So, the fishermen got angry again and basically started boycotting the seiners. Stores and gas pumps wouldn't sell anything to any seiner fishermen. Cashiers just ignored them and gas stations turned off their pumps.

So, just yesterday, the NB fisheries minister loaded up a truck full of groceries and drove all the way down here to deliver the groceries to the seiners. Fishermen got pissed off and broke out into a massive protest again. The groceries had to be delivered to the seiners by the RCMP

what I'm wondering is, if you pissed off so many people last year, why come back! Coming back a second season was really to just piss the PEI fishermen off, like saying, "You can't do nothing about it!"

so...thoughts?

Well, if laws are in affect, I think they should charge them with a huge fine. This will make their efforts not worth the trouble. If they are legally fishing, the PEi guys should just learn to leave with it and try to fish better than them. Or, maybe they could just sink the NB seiners at the docks (without hurting anyone of course). :)
Studied this problem last year in Geography. The borders need to completely cover the entire Atlantic Plate (that's what it is, right?) or else they will deplete the natural resource.
If they're going to be fined, then the fine needs to be greater than they can bring in during the season. that won't make it worth it if they have to give up the entire catch for 1 fine. or make it the fine per fish. I know some can easily hit 3 or 3 grand per haul maybe more. Every studied y they are coming to the PEI docks? is it just because of the wharfs or are the processing plants there? Maybe PEI should make some consessions to NB to maybe get a 30%-50% cut from the total haul of all the NB seiners. That way, at least the docks could be extended or otherwise improved. It would be another income for PEI and the locals could be compenstated for the loss of income from the illegal fishing. Use the money to put more RCMP (or whoever does your marine patrols) on the ocean to patrol the boundries to catch these people.I can see y they would pissed up though, i know i would be if that was done to me!If i got the two places mixed up, just reverse them :)
I think they should let me come in there with my 1337 flying skillz and tear those big industrial guys a new one.

You gotta get off the runway first :)
fighting over fish. and according to sock, this is a geographic issue in canada. sorry, i guess i find that a little funny. i will just replace the word fish with something more important to me so that i can take ti seriously. let say fish = cookies. ok that will work. so they are taking your cookies and you are angry. my advice, pee on the cookies and they won't want to eat them. if urinating isn't your style you could always just lick them. you can get G to touch their cookies and nobody will want them anymore either... you choice. hope that helps :)

yes

PEI will set up a task force bent on licking all the fish in the Gulf of St.Lawrence!

You can see where Souris is and stuff...and how big the Gulf is.

I live outside Charlottetown! :)

also note where NB is....

I'm not sure what laws Canada has but I do know here in the U.S. for example I can buy a permit here in Georgia and fish of the shores of both Alabama, Florida, and South Carolina within a certain distance Canada may Have the same thing from province to province but if its all in the same province I am not sure if there is anything against it other than ethical reasons.
Canada has borders now of something like 200 miles off the coast? Usually it's 12-20. We're trying to stop them, but it's hard. And to cow: Guess what, seeing as you don't have fish in Denver or wherever you live, where will you get it when these people deplete the resource?
If it weren't for fish farms, lots of species would be gone.where's the waste goto? restaurants, markets, my stomach :DHow are they bad for the environment? unless providing fish that would otherwise is a bad thing :D
Ermm.... I'll look at the big picture.Canadians are fishing. Some Canadians catch more fish then other Canadians, making some other Canadians mad. It's exactly this childish province versus province mentality that keeps Canada from reaching it's full potential.Nationalisim will bring us victory! :D
Well, personally, I think cow might be on to something (or just on something), but I was just wondering.... has anyone asked the fish how they feel about this? 8) Maybe they should have a say! Let's get OJ Simpson's lawyers back to defend the rights of the fish! Maybe that might clarify things a bit!
There got be some kind of federal regulatory dept to handle it.Thats what they do in the US we have seasons and limits on fishing hunting all of that.
Same place all the waste goes from those fish living wild, or from say, a herd of cattle, it goe back into the enviroment

fishing hunting all of that.

we have seasons and such too, it's just that they're fishing in our waters in season.

if they were fishing out of season, they'd lose their liscenes instantly, no questions asked

Have you ever seen a fish farm? Millions of fish in a concentrated area, all pooping. Creating a poopland.
