I just noticed that this is a process running at startup and it stays on. What is this? I don't think it has always ran at startup. Is it related to Punkbuster and why does it run at startup now?

I think they added it to show up in one of the more recent punkbuster updates. I've seen posts about it on totalbf2142 and punkbuster, I'll try to find it.

I think it must be something with the new PB update. I am almost positive that you can disable it because the other day I noticed it in my process window of task manager and exited it and PnkBstrB.exe and played BF2142 afterwards with no problems.

Yeah I dont like how im not playing 2142 but PB is still running on my computer. Feels like im enabled to hackers.

I can't say I like this service running all the time...it should only run with any punkbuster enabled game only. I hate it when they slip that crap in there. Thanks for the find!

I tried this fix from one of the above links and it works so far, the services are gone and I didn't get kicked by punkbuster.

 

1. Click on the start menu, click on Run.... Type services.msc.

 

2. Under services find PnkBstrA. Right click it and stop it from the option in the drop-down menu.

 

3. Now double click it. On startup type select disabled.

 

4. Repeat 2 and 3 for PnkBstrB.

 

4. Go to your windows/system32 folder.

 

5. Find the two files, PnkBstrA.exe and PnkBstrB.exe and delete them.

 

6. Go to \Program Files\ELECTRONIC ARTS\Battlefield 2142\pb folder.

 

7. Delete PnkBstrB.exe and PnkBstrK(if present).

 

8. Go to http://websec.evenbalance.com/downlo...ws/pbsetup.exe and download the pbsetup for your operating system.

 

9. Install. Select game directory and update PB.

Well...like a tool I went and disabled the service, forgot that I did that, tried to load BF2142 and that was a no go, it wouldn't even connect. Once I started the service again all was good, but it does get to me that they would run a service that launches on startup and just sits there when not playing a PB enabled game.
