  1. It’s been a phenomenal week for team Battlefield as we’ve dived head-first into gamescom, the premiere gaming convention in Europe. There, we unveiled some big news, included new gameplay, and new details on Battlefield 3. All that and more is coming up in this brand new edition of Battlefield 3 Highlights of the Week! We kicked things off this week with the gamescom 2011 EA Press Conference, live from Cologne, Germany, where DICE’s Patrick Söderlund and Karl Magnus Troedsson unveiled a brand new feature for the Battlefield series: Co-op. With this new component comes a lot of promise and a lot of focus, and while it’s easy to talk about the new mode, we thought it would be best to show you. That’s right – Patrick and KM picked up the controllers and played through a new co-op level to give you a taste of what kind of gameplay you’ll be treated to when Battlefield 3 launches this October! Did you miss the live stream? Check out the entire EA Pres Conference from ggamescomamescom 2011 below! When we were preparing to premiere co-op, we knew that you’d have a lot of questions about this new mode. That’s why we dedicated this week’s installment of the Battleblog to this brand new feature to the franchise. We sat down with Battlefield 3 Lead Co-op Designer David Spinnier to talk about the new mode and what sort of goals they had while designing it. As said in the article, Spinner and his team are fusing the replayability of multiplayer with a pick up and play mentality to create a totally new flavor of Battlefield, and this post has all the details. Click here to read Battleblog #7: Battlefield 3 Introduces Themed Co-Op Campaign. You asked for it, and you got it. Battlefield 3 fans have been clamoring for more multiplayer footage, asking to see the large-scale maps of Battlefield 3. With that in mind, we launched a new trailer, featuring one of the 64-player vehicle warfare maps from Battlefield 3: Caspian Border. 64 players? We’ve got that covered in this beautiful, expansive map. Dogtags? As evidenced by the poor chump who got knifed, yup. Those are accounted for. Vehicles? Tanks, APCs and helicopters can fit that bill, right? Jets? Oh, you’d best believe there’s a dog fight going on. Don’t take my word for it! Check out the Caspian Border gameplay trailer for yourself! If that’s not enough and you’d like to know more about the details of what’s seen in this trailer, the folks at OffDutyGamers.com used their considerable military expertise to give a complete breakdown of what’s found in this trailer. Were you curious about a specific class featured in the trailer? Wondering what the jet in the trailer was? It’s all here in this detailed analysis provided by the military experts of OffDutyGamers.com. Along with all the Battlefield 3 coverage coming in from gamescom, a lot of buzz on the game was all over the convention. The Battlefield 3 demo (which included PS3 co-op and 64-player multiplayer on the PC) was quickly getting the attention of not only our wonderful fans, but also the gamescom judges as well. On August 17, the gamescom judges announced that they have unanimously named Battlefield 3 “Best of gamescom 2011”. We’re over the moon with this award, and especially how happy our fans are with the game. As a matter of fact, IGN has asked the fans what game should receive its People’s Choice Award for gamescom 2011, and Battlefield 3 needs your support! Your vote matters! Head over to the IGN People’s Choice Award page to vote and support Battlefield 3! The party from gamescom is still going strong, with a live chat with the Battlefield 3 gang, live from the show floor! In this final live broadcast, the Battlefield team will return to EA’s community lounge on Saturday, August 20 at 11:30am CET / 5:30 am ET / 2:30 am PT to show all of our fans some brand new video featuring gameplay from the newly unveiled co-op mode. Click here to go to the live chat page and be sure to tune in this Saturday! Thanks for tuning in and we’ll be back next week with even more Battlefield goodies for you to enjoy! If you have any videos or images, or any other great Battlefield-related items you'd like highlighted, hit us up on Facebook or Twitter! Until then, if you have any questions, comments or suggestions, leave us a note in the comments section and we’ll respond as soon as possible. Follow Battlefield on Facebook! 6. Co-op in Battlefield 3 is designed to be the perfect blend between the strong narrative from single player and the open-ended action from multiplayer. Lead Co-op Designer David Spinnier and his team are fusing the replayability of multiplayer with a pick up and play mentality to create a totally new flavor of Battlefield. http://blogs.battlefield.ea.com/resized-image.ashx/__size/550x0/__key/CommunityServer.Blogs.Components.WeblogFiles/battlefield_5F00_bad_5F00_company/BF3_2D00_Battleblog_2D00_7_2D00_Co_2D00_op_2D00_Man_2D00_Down.jpg Battlefield 3 will be our biggest Battlefield game yet. Besides the expansive multiplayer mode and single player campaign, it will also ship with a co-op campaign out of the box. Read on for the full details straight from our Lead Co-op Designer. -- Every mission in co-op is a new experience. We wanted to create the ultimate mix of play styles for you and a friend, said David Spinnier. The co-op missions in Battlefield 3 take place in the same world as the single player campaign, and follows a unique series of events that lead up to an explosive finish. Players in co-op will take the role of soldiers that are not tied to any one particular branch of the Armed Forces. This is an intentional design decision to allow for a vast variety in gameplay in the different co-op missions. Lend a helping hand To survive through the co-op missions, you’ll need to stay close to your buddy. If he goes down, lend a helping hand with the new co-op “Man down!” mechanic, that lets you revive him in the heat of battle. While being down, you can still use your secondary weapon to defend yourself, while slowly crawling to a safer spot where your friend can help you without getting shot. If both of you go down, it’s game over. You fight together. You die together. And you score together. After having cleared a co-op mission with your friend, your total combined score will be displayed via Battlelog, our suite of free social features that connect all Battlefield 3 players. Missions are designed to be shorter than single player missions, so you can easily do multiple rounds in an evening to try and beat your friends’ high score. The best score of your Friend will be displayed for each mission, so you know what to aim for. Difficulty is high. Spinner and his colleagues are going for a tough challenge in all missions. Also, since competitive players will likely try each mission several times, all of the co-op missions contain randomized elements to keep every playthrough fresh. Clearing the co-op missions not only gives you scores and bragging rights – it also has benefits for your multiplayer career. There are a number of weapons that you can unlock in co-op and take with you to the regular multiplayer modes. These unlocks are based on your combined scores ackumulated throughout the co-op campaign. http://blogs.battlefield.ea.com/resized-image.ashx/__size/550x0/__key/CommunityServer.Blogs.Components.WeblogFiles/battlefield_5F00_bad_5F00_company/BF3_2D00_Battleblog_2D00_7_2D00_Co_2D00_op_2D00_Exfiltration.jpg Exfiltration under way. Exfiltrate Hamid El Zakir At GamesCom 2011, we are running Battlefield 3 in co-op for the first time, with the mission Exfiltration. It revolves around a defecting informant, El Zakir, that you and your co-op friend needs to escort to safety. The mission starts outside the building where El Zakir resides. You need to move in, remove any opposition, and extract the target. If you can make it that far without raising a single alarm, there’s a little bonus in it for you. Here’s a little playing tip for you: If you need to take out multiple targets simultaneously (which is the case in Exfiltration), do a countdown over the voice chat. That way you can open fire at the same time, which gives the enemy less time to react. Part two of Exfiltration has you clearing a path for your convoy so you can reach the outskirts of the city, before entering two of the vehicles and assisting by manning the top-mounted machine guns. Exfiltration is not over there, and there are more elements to it, but by now you should have a good idea what awaits in one of our diverse co-op missions. More will be revealed later. 7. Battlefield 3 is a force to be reckoned with. Its appearance at Gamescom 2011 (which includes PS3 co-op and 64-player multiplayer on the PC) in Cologne, Germany has been generating a ton of buzz among our fans...and apparently the judges as well. They have just announced that Battlefield 3 was unanimously elected the Best of Gamescom 2011 award! This is extremely exciting and we are very happy that everyone is enjoying the game. 8. It’s easy to forget about some of the core staples of Battlefield, namely classes and interactive (aka: destructible) environments. Happily, this is also a concern of YouTube user Muzzafuzza, and he put together this great video that gives some great insight into some easily overlooked elements of Battlefield. Muzzafuzza does a rather great job explaining on how to use environments to your advantage – equipment, vehicles, attack routes are all covered, and simply being aware of these points will definitely do you more favors than create more hassles. Another huge point that’s made is the uses of classes – Muzzafuzza really recommends players know their role. That is, be aware of what your class is, and use them to their intended function – do that, and your entire squad, or entire team, will benefit from your wise actions. 9. Matt Cuttle of the EA PWNED show managed to get an exclusive interview with DICE General Manager Karl-Magnus Troedsson about the co-op demo and 64-player PC battles in Battlefield 3. Check out the video below: If you want to cut right to the chase, here is the transcript of the aforementioned interview: MC: Karl Magnus, thank you for joining us on the side of the stage here. You've just been playing co-op and it was pretty hectic! KM: It was pretty hectic and it's actually quite dangerous when you do live demos on stage, especially when the co-op demo has random factors built into it but we managed to pull it off well, I think. MC: So we just got a taste on the show there, what will you be showing over the next few days at Gamescom? KM: Well have a very wide offering, actually. In the main booth, we're going to have a 64 player PC map called Caspian Border being played out in Conquest Mode that's going to be very, very big. MC: And the final thing you showed that trailer involving those jets... pretty special! KM: You like it? MC: I like it a lot, yeah! KM: We're also going to have the Playstation 3 co-op build. The mission is called Exfiltration that we showed here at the press conference today. That's going to be playable as well on different parts at Gamescom. But we also have Team Deathmatch playable on PC, on the map called Metro that some of you might have played during the Alpha Trial. That's going to be in the Community Lounge, so if you're sneaky, you might be able to get in there as well and play. MC: Do you know what? I don't think I'm going to get any work done at Gamescom. I think I'm just going to camp out at the Battlefield 3 zone. KM: That would be a perfect result of what we have done! Keep checking back for more Battlefield 3 updates and be sure to visit the GamesCom landing page for photos, tweets, video and more! Source: View the full article
