  3. Just in from Medal of Honor Blog Feed From Vietnam to Modern Day: The M16 On this week's Military Monday, we take a look at one of the most legendary weapons today. By Rick 'Lunch_meat' Givens Contributing Writer, OffDutyGamers.com Of all the weapons throughout conflict, one of the most widely known and recognized is the M16. Initially designed by ArmaLite as the AR-15, the weapon first saw service in the jungles of Vietnam under Project Agile of the Advanced Research Projects Agency. Tasked with finding “inventive fixes to the Communist problem in South Vietnam,” ARPA sent 10 and then eventually 1000 AR-15 rifles to US Allies to test the weapon. The initial reports were enthusiastic, and the US Special Operations Soldiers embedded with the South Vietnamese troops began pressing for its adaptation. The stopping power of the 5.556 mm round was so effective; photographs showing enemy casualties caused by it remained classified until the 1980s. Officially adopted for service in 1963 under two different specifications, the M16 and the XM16E1, the weapon was eventually standardized as the M16A1, seeing service throughout Vietnam. Despite initial failures caused by the powder in the ammunition, US Forces like the weapon. Of approximately 2100 troops surveyed, less than 1% or 38 wished to replace the M16. Of those 38, 35 of them opted for the shorter CAR-15, which was the eventual inspiration of the M4. Since then, the M16 has seen various adaptations, and used by over 70 countries; in addition, civilian models exist, making this weapon easily available worldwide. The M16A4 is the most recent model, dubbed the Modular Weapon System, this variant allows for numerous military and civilian sights, grips for other attachments. But those toys usually come later, just as in game; generally, the Grunt has nothing but a standard issue rifle to depend on. This is where skill comes in; you will never see a Marine or even a Soldier panic firing their weapon. Our forces rely on short, aimed bursts, or even single fire when engaging the enemy. Likewise, even the best-planned shot goes straight out the window as soon as the enemy moves. That’s why we train to shoot on the move, to avoid becoming a stationary target, but it also requires us to train in bringing effective fire on a moving target. As in real life, when the M16 or M4 is fired, the barrel will travel upward, creating a wide area of fire if not controlled. I’ve spoken in past articles how to counteract this, briefly however; simply pull the mouse towards you, or move the controller in the downward motion. Think as though you were attempting to aim downwards as you fire, this will have effect of pulling the barrel back on target, and keeping those longer bursts under control. If you’re using the standard sights, put that front sight post directly on the point of aim. Laser sights are nice, but even in real life they don’t make a bad shooter good, they just show him where he will miss. Firing on the move is more complicated, and requires greater skill than from a static position. Here your selection of weapons and equipment become paramount. With the M16/M4, your best choice is to use either the iron sights, or red dot, and bring the weapon up to aim. Approach the target from a crouched position, or drop as soon as you see him, and let him know you care. Move from cover to cover, using the terrain to hamper incoming fire, and sweep your weapon like a turret. Firing at a moving target however, presents its own special problems; you can take everything I just wrote, use it and miss completely against a moving target. It’s nice when your opponent holds still, and we should all send him a special thank you downrange, but if he is on the move, the most you will see is a puff of dust as the round impacts where he just left. For targets moving perpendicular (that’s sideways…) to you, select a point of aim ahead of them and fire, allowing them to run into the bullet. Distance will play a factor, and you want to lead them a little more, the further they are out. A good rule of thumb, aim for the furthest extension, whether it is a weapon or a hand. For faster moving targets, such as the Bradley and UAV, aim for the “tip of the nose” and adjust fire accordingly. For those considerate enough to be moving towards you, look at them, smile and say thank you. Your mother always taught you to use manners right? Nothing really complicated, as the enemy will only present a larger point of aim. But, if he’s bravely running away, select a point that is center mass and concentrate on those single shots and short bursts. Using the tactics and techniques taught in the military doesn’t make us a superior gamer to everyone else; many of the same subjects I’ve talked about are incorporated into the various styles of casual and competitive players everywhere. But, present day conflicts, from Vietnam onward, taught us the skills our Forces use. The reason why they use them is that they work... 17. Just in from Medal of Honor Blog Feed Get Some Class In Medal of Honor, knowing which class to play is perhaps the most important decision. Truth be told, we will at one time or another focus on one class in order to level up. But how many of us consider the strengths and weaknesses of each class, how that comes into play on the various maps and game modes, and how we can benefit our teams? In Medal of Honor, knowing which class to play is perhaps the most important decision. Truth be told, we will at one time or another focus on one class in order to level up. But how many of us consider the strengths and weaknesses of each class, how that comes into play on the various maps and game modes, and how we can benefit our teams? Sure, it’s easy to stick with that one favorite, to rank him up, get all the unlocks, and then move to another. Sometimes that works great, and if that works for you, hey, stick with it, your game, your choice. But stop and think for a moment. There are times when it makes absolutely no sense to choose a particular class, when the abilities and equipment become more of a liability to not only your team, but to your enjoyment as well. First up is everyone’s favorite, the Rifleman. Perhaps the most versatile of all the classes, the Rifleman is effective in close range or long distance combat. Coupled with the right equipment, the Rifleman can make life miserable for snipers, or run and gun with the best of them. Standard issue equipment includes the basic Assault Rifle with iron sights, and the Grenade Launcher. As you increase in level, you unlock other items, such as the M249 SAW or other light machine guns. Here the Rifleman truly shines through for his squad. The strength of the LMG is in its ability to deliver massive amounts of firepower over a sustained period from a distance. Think of a support gunner, yes, you can run and gun and will probably do a lot more damage. Hang back a bit in a covered position; you get a wider angle of fire, seeing a greater portion of the battlefield. Top that off with some improved sights, muzzle break and open tip ammo, the Rifleman gives enemy infantry cause to worry. Say the LMGs are not your thing, and you want to try something different. An effective counter sniper technique is using the Combat Scope attachment, pair up with one of your Sniper teammates, covering him and making the occasional long range kill yourself. Alternatively, if you plan to infiltrate the enemy lines you can be a little stealthy with the Suppressor. Either way, you can sacrifice a little bit of the accuracy for some stopping power by choosing Open Tip Ammo. The choice will ultimately depend on what game type map you are playing. Next up is Special Operations, and their plethora of toys. Each side starts with Carbines or an SMG. The Carbine is pretty much a medium range weapon, slightly less accurate at longer ranges than their Assault Rifle cousins, while the SMGs are best deployed at close range. Your Spec Ops guys should be the primary go-getters. They are designed for up close combat, as the order and type of special unlocks demonstrates. The first weapon unlock for Special Operations is the Shotgun, a devastating close range weapon sure to gain you the love of your opponents. On servers without a Hardcore Mode, the Shotgun is pretty much going to guarantee you a one shot kill, at the expense of speed and distance. As the Spec Ops player progresses, he eventually unlocks the Shotgun Slugs, which make him an excellent party favor. While not as accurate, the slugs have the effect of adding increased range and damage to the already powerful shotgun. If you are going to provide sniper support, or hang back with the Spec Ops, then you need to work up to the Laser Sight, this attachment brings the range needed to the Carbine, and makes it deadly accurate. Again, these guys are the ones meant to be on the forefront, it makes no sense wasting your time sniping with an MP7 a combat scope. But hey, your choice. Now we have the Snipers, easily the most hated and most misused class of any game. Face it; no one likes to spawn take a step and then drop. That is what a Sniper is for, long-range hate and discontent. A sniper should never be at the forefront of an assault, he belongs way in the back, tucked away in a comfy little hole. The Sniper is probably one of the harder classes to rank up. Not many maps make for a friendly environment. Here, more than any other, the player needs to take into account the map, game type and number of players. Snipers will find their best success on game types such as Combat Mission, or maps with wide-open areas the enemy needs to traverse such as Helmand Valley. Areas of little cover, choke points and ridgelines should be their focus. Going to pistol should be a last ditch sign of desperation, or if the player REALLY wants a challenge…Never bring a pistol to a machine gun fight. The first truly effective unlock for the Sniper will be the Combat Scope, adding greater viewing distance to his rifle, and culminating in the High Power Scope, which adds even more. Neither have the effect of increasing the accuracy inherit in the weapon, but in my opinion being able to see the target more clearly definitely makes for accurate fire. Now, add a rangefinder to that, and the only things requiring the Sniper to move from base is the advance of the map and the inability to guide the bullet by remote control…Best of all, as the Sniper advances in level, he gets the G3 Battle Rifle. If ever there were a time the Sniper could advance with the squad, and not be fodder for enemy shooters, it will be then. Even so, the limitations of looking through the scopes at close range make it inadvisable. Ultimately, it is your choice which class to choose, and what is your favorite weapon/attachment combination. After all half the fun is getting there, but once you get comfortable, give some thought to what makes sense. -- Mark Christianson is the Editor-in-Chief of Off Duty Gamers More... Get Some Class

  24. Just in from Medal of Honor 2010 Blog Feed The Tier 1 Dedication On this Veteran's Day, the Medal of Honor team is sharing the Tier 1 dedication from the end of Medal of Honor's single player campaign with the entire world, Hit the jump for the full post. The following text is the Tier 1 dedication as seen when completing Medal of Honor’s single player campaign. This was not written or edited by any EA employee. This is directly from the Tier 1 Operators who consulted during the development of Medal of Honor, and on this Veteran’s Day, we’re sharing this dedication with the entire world. To our brothers, past and present – This is a dedication to America’s servicemen. A dedication to the debt we owe to Warriors lost and to all of our military forces who continue to defend freedom around the world. Men and women who have honorably served throughout our nation’s history – who stood and continue to stand fast in the face of a determined enemy and defeat them with unwavering discipline. Most Americans do not know what our Special Operations Forces community experience. They do not know what these Warriors endure in combat, nor do they understand the selflessness and love of the brothers beside them. Men within this community bring the fight to the enemy, engage aggressively and stand their ground. Born unto a different cloth, these men could have chosen a life of prosperity and chased every opportunity afforded by our great nation. Giving life as they live it, they chose to leave these pursuits behind and devote themselves instead to a higher calling, living with indomitable purpose, by simple truths – Brotherhood. Honor. Sacrifice. Words molded into their character, exemplified by their actions. It is their final hour we celebrate – our fallen brothers who shine a light on the greatest attributes of dedicated men. With their sacrifice, legends are born and will live as examples to inspire the heroes that will lead our nation to victory in the years ahead; making our founding fathers proud and acting as a promise to America’s next generation. This is to our fallen brothers. You will be honored in our community’s history as the greatest heroes. As men who shouldered our nation’s burdens, you will remain as beacons for our heroic ideals. Taught to be proud and unbending in failure and humble in success, there are no greater examples for which this nation stands for and of which this nation is built from – the ideal of service to country and others. To our community and all who wear the uniform – Thank you for your service to the nation. And, to those in this hour who are in the fight and keep our enemies awake at night. More... The Tier 1 Dedication
