COD4 MW2 Multiplayer Fail

Featured Replies

No dedicated clan servers. No mods. You have to play on IWs servers and have to go through the pain in the ass process of setting up private games to play with the same group of people. No community. This is absolutely ridiculous. Everything good about PC FPS ****ed up and thrown away.

Pre-Order cancelled.

Here are the snippets:

We're doing a lot on the backend to make the game accessible for everyone.

There is no delay for the PC version of MW2

There's prestige mode

Jason West at the MP event, said that he was dead on, on the matchmaking servers. We've been building a system on the backend called IW.NET.

You are completely reliant on IW.NET. There are no server lists. There are no dedicated servers.

You have private matches where you can customize the game

You cannot put MW2 on a dedicated server.

This is the first time we've ever done something like this and the team has huge plans for what IW.NET develops into.

Customizing your game...you have quite a few options in a private match

You're getting same game (as in Console), plus matchmaking and private match.

Server admin point-of view, NO DEDICATED SERVERS

I've summarized some of my own thoughts from the cast here:

General

IW partnering through Steam is what you will see in the future. Matchmaking is not through Steam, but IW.NET is run in conjunction with Steam.

GSP's will no longer be renting out servers.

No PunkBuster. VAC will be used as an anti cheat.

Retail distribution: Pre-orders will get a disk. Or you could order from Steam.

DLC may now need to be paid for - not confirmed.

Piracy was only a small reason for going to IW.NET - not the whole reason.

Clans:

No more clan servers. Private matches, replace clan servers.

Listen servers will connect to each other.

IW.NET/Steam will replace the community server admin

Competitive Gaming

Competitive gaming has changed forever.

It might be possible in the future for IW engineers to load a "competitive" setting on IW.NET, but it is far from a guarantee. It might also never happen.

Modding

Modding the game is now very much in question. Fourzerotwo had no info on modding. However, it appears that there will be no mods or maps for MW2.

Modding in SpecOps? Unknown.

Just when you think things can't get worst for PC gaming. What are these people thinking ...what a bunch of tards... I am not buying this game. :D

Same here, they really screwed the pooch on this one:warning: :D :)

Where do we send our hatemail?

WOW! I am glad I did not preorder! I was looking forward to this game....Welp...guess it is back to MMOs for me! Aion or WoW anyone?
i'll probly still get the 360 bundle that i was planning on getting cuz i can always sell the game.
Yeah, whats up with that. i was totally going to buy this game, now i don't even see a point to except for the single player version of it.
really what they did is no different then battlenet for warcraft3 and diablo 2, or what ea uses for c&c

This is lame, was hoping we could give the clan some life with this game but it doesn't look like it now. I'll still get the game for singleplayer and the new Spec Ops game mode.

But who knows maybe they will patch in the dedicated servers like they did with Call of Duty: World at War?

Also they are using a program called VAC instead of Punkbuster.

Looks like PC gaming is going the way of console gaming. DLC wil also not be free, your going to need to pay for it on the PC. I hope this trend doesn't spread.

The HUGE difference is that CoD is a first person shooter, where games are played with dozens of people.

What a stupid move by IW... at least they're not using punkbuster, but still not gonna buy the game because of this move.

I don't know if I will buy the game or not now. It makes sense why they are doing it.

- Cheaper to produce because they don't have to change much for the PC version.

- Limit piracy by forcing the use of DD models like Steam.

My biggest problems with these changes is the no dedicated servers. This is probably the biggest change from any other game on PC. L4D, because of how the game has to work, the use of a matchmaking service makes sense, and with L4D there are still dedicated servers so that every player has the best connection. When the dedicated servers aren't working for L4D it is a very painful experience trying to play. From what I have read, MW2 is all listen servers? So I am going to have to deal with someone's residential DSL service? Awesome.

I am not sure how many game server hosting companies their are, but this is a real threat to them.

Well, I guess this all comes down to the obvious point that of somewhere around 85% of COD4 players were consoles. PC gaming is the least of their concerns anymore. And, if anything, why not just treat the few PCs left like everyone else.

Will it help with server hacking, i know its a big problem in CoD 4. Maybe they did it to help?
That... just made me reall sad :D not sure what game to do with ARMORY now. COD4 Hardcore mode was the most fun with a shooter I have ever had...
Also they are using a program called VAC instead of Punkbuster.

TBH this is a BIG bonus.. and possibly the ONLY advantage of steam
TBH this is a BIG bonus.. and possibly the ONLY advantage of steam

No, VAC is only marginally better than Punkbuster. Anyone ever seen how many cheaters there are in Counter-Strike? It has VAC anti-cheat also.... I have a major problem with not allowing clan server types. How can friends play together and even if they add a friend ability if you are playing on morons private server with his 1.5 MB connection how good is your game going to be anyway? I was really looking forward to this game but I can not see myself buying it now.

I can almost bet the backlash is going to be so big they will change this. We need to all write an email to the company if anyone can find a good contact email address.

I signed it too. Anyone know when it started? It had about 35k signatures when I signed it.

And on the issue of punkbuster vs. VAC:

I've played games with both. CS:S and TF2 and every valve game use VAC. I have never seen a cheater in TF2. I have seen a few in CS:S. I have seen hundreds in CoD4.

Not to mention that Punkbuster ALWAYS runs on your system, like spyware. If you check your processes, its always in there. If you disable it running, it messes things up. So even if VAC weren't better at keeping cheaters out (which in my experience it is) it would still get a huge thumbs up from me for not acting like spyware.

See that's the whole thing is it really going to make it better? Call of Duty 4 has thousands of hackers, every time a play on a server there is at least 3 that come in and all you can do to get rid of the is to kick them if your the admin, i played CS 1.6 and i never saw a hacker, yeah i know their out there but it was a lot better then 4. i think im still going to buy the game but right now its because of the single player part of it.
well if we cant play with our friends then whats the point . well i guess i saved 60 dollars i wont be buying the game
Well i have changed my mind. I signed the petition and i will go tomorrow to gamestop to cancel my preorder for CoD MW2 to help us PC gamers boycott the game.
Steam has it up for pre-order for $59. A bit high considering it appears to be a console port.
