Doomsday vault begins deep freeze! http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/44242000/jpg/_44242166_tunnel203gcdt.jpg Engineers have begun the two-month process of cooling down a "doomsday vault", which will house seeds from all known varieties of key food crops. The temperature inside the Svalbard Global Seed Vault will drop to -18C (0F) in order to preserve the seeds. Built deep inside a mountain, it aims to safeguard the world's crops from future disasters, such as nuclear wars, asteroids or dangerous climate change. The first seeds are scheduled to arrive at the Arctic site in mid-February. The Norwegian government is paying the $9m (?4.5m) construction costs of the vault, which will have enough space to house 4.5 million seed samples. See inside the Svalbard Global Seed Vault The collection and maintenance of the seeds is being co-ordinated by the Global Crop Diversity Trust, which has responsibility of ensuring the "conservation of crop diversity in perpetuity". "The seed vault is the perfect place for keeping seeds safe for centuries," said Cary Fowler, the Trust's executive director. "At these temperatures, seeds for important crops like wheat, barley and peas can last for up to 1,000 years." Future proof The seed vault will be built 120m (364ft) inside a mountain on Spitsbergen, one of four islands that make up Svalbard. The site, 1,000km (621 miles) north of mainland Norway, was chosen as the location for the vault because it was very remote and it also offered the level of stability required for the long-term project. The vast collection is intended to act as insurance against disasters so food production can be restarted anywhere on the planet following a regional or global catastrophe. "It is very satisfying to see the vault evolve from a bold concept to an impressive facility that has everything we need to protect crop biodiversity," said Terje Riis-Johansen, the Norwegian Agriculture and Food Minister. Engineers are using the surrounding rock and permafrost as a "cold store", an energy efficient approach that has become popular in Norway. "We believe the design of the vault will ensure that the seeds will stay well preserved even if forces such as global warming raise temperatures outside the facility," explained project manager Magnus Tveiten. http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42551000/gif/_42551989_seed_vault_416.gif

  11. http://www.smh.com.au/ffximage/2007/11/16/combathelmet1_wideweb__470x304,0.jpg X-ray helmet set to revolutionise aerial warfare 200 Billion Helmet ! Australian pilots flying the new generation of fighter jets now under development will wear bespoke, high-tech helmets equipped with a feature that gives airmen simulated X-ray vision. The cutting edge headgear, which looks like it's been sourced from a Star Wars costume department, is being tested by Royal Air Force (RAF) scientists at the Boscombe Down base south-west of London. The RAF has just released a photograph of the so-called Helmet Mounted Display System (HMDS), which will be used by pilots manning the new F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) aircraft. Australia is one of eight partner countries - including Britain, Canada, Italy, and Turkey - that have signed up to the $US200 billion ($225 billion) US-led JSF project, the world's most expensive military aerospace program. The helmet integrates a host of sophisticated electronic features including dashboard-type navigation, targeting and monitoring data that will be displayed on the inside of the helmet's visor, just centimetres from a pilot's face. According to the RAF statement, the helmet will "integrate night vision capability and even superimpose infra-red imagery onto the visor which allows the pilot to 'look through' the cockpit floor at night and see the world below". This is achieved with the use of six infra-red sensors on the aircraft that will relay a virtual see-through representation onto the visor display. "The F-35 HMDS is new and nothing like it has been fielded," said Louis Taddeo, marketing director of Vision Systems International (VSI), the company developing the helmet. "It provides revolutionary capability" Weighing approximately 1.5 kilograms, the new helmet will also incorporate "first look, first shot" technology used in earlier models that allows pilots to line-up targets simply by looking at them. Previously, pilots would have to manoeuvre the aircraft so its nose was pointing at the target.

  23. Hollywood Writers Announce Strike http://img.breitbart.com/images/2007/11/4/D8SNC5D00/D8SNC5D00.jpg LOS ANGELES (AP) - Hollywood writers will strike after last-ditch talks called by a federal mediator failed. Writers and studios broke off talks late Sunday after East Coast members of the writers union declared they were officially on strike, the group representing producers said. Last-ditch negotiations between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers ended after about 11 hours. Producers said writers refused a request to "stop the clock" on a planned strike while talks continued. "It is unfortunate that they choose to take this irresponsible action," producers said in a statement. Producers said writers were not willing to compromise on their major demands. The writers union confirmed that talks had ended and that members would strike, but did not have any further comment. The guild earlier announced sweeping plans to picket every major studio in Los Angeles, along with Rockefeller Center in New York, where NBC is headquartered. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers previously called a writers' strike "precipitous and irresponsible." The guilds had been preparing for these negotiations for years, hiring staff with extensive labor union experience, and developing joint strategies and a harder line than producers have seen in decades. "We haven't shown particular resolve in past negotiations," said John Bowman, the WGA's chief negotiator. "The sea change is that this is an enormously galvanizing issue and two, that the new regime at the guild actually has a plan, has an organization and a structure to respond to something." The writers are the first union to bargain for a new deal this year. Their contract expired Wednesday. In past years, actors have almost always gone first, although the Directors Guild of America, which is seen as the least aggressive of the three guilds, has sometimes taken the lead. Whatever deal was struck first was usually accepted by the others. The guilds are aware that if writers fail to win concessions involving DVDs and the Internet, actors may have to take up the fight. "This is an issue that touches every member of this guild and every member of the Screen Actors Guild as well," said Carlton Cuse, executive producer of the ABC drama "Lost." Consumers are expected to spend $16.4 billion on DVDs this year, according to Adams Media Research. By contrast, studios could generate only $158 million from selling movies online and about $194 million from selling TV shows over the Web, although those numbers are expected to skyrocket in coming years. Writers only get about 3 cents on a typical DVD retailing for $20. Studios argue that it is too early to know how much money they can make from offering entertainment on the Internet, cell phones, iPods and other devices. Hollywood unions have long regretted a decision made in 1984 to accept a small percentage of home video sales because studios said the technology was untested and that costs were high. The guilds have tried and failed for two decades to increase video payments, even as DVDs have become more profitable for studios than box office receipts. The first casualty of the strike would be late-night talk shows, which are dependent on current events to fuel monologues and other entertainment. Daytime TV, including live talk shows such as "The View" and soap operas, which typically tape about a week's worth of shows in advance, would be next to feel the impact. The strike will not immediately impact production of movies or prime- time TV programs. Most studios have stockpiled dozens of movie scripts, and TV shows have enough scripts or completed shows in hand to last until early next year.
