Battlefield Blog: BF4 Class Week: The Assault
http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Assault-640x359.jpg The Assault class design in its Russian, American, and Chinese variants. Taking Care of Business and Bruises Even though every Battlefield class brings something unique to your squad’s efforts, the Assault class is truly a personification of team play. Think of all the times you’ve been boiling of anger after a sudden death – and then regaining your fighting spirit thanks to a timely revive. Or those narrow escapes into cover with 3% health left when you notice a Medic Bag on the ground. An Assault doing its job can’t be overvalued. Playing as Assault is not just tending to field medic duties, though. With the wide variety of assault rifles and grenade launchers a successful Assault needs to be out there, leading the charge towards Control Points or M-COM Stations, remaining cool in the heat of battle. Creating shortcuts by blasting holes in walls with the grenade launchers or blinding the enemy by smoke should also be on the repertoire. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/VG_HAZARDER-640x360.jpg Get back in there, soldier! #Battleshot entry by: VG_HAZARDER. Community Mission: Make 25 Million Revives The in-game challenge for this Class Week is truly one dedicated to team work. In a new Community Mission designed for the Assault class we want you to collectively make 25 million revives. Charge up the Defibs, and keep the hearts of your team mates beating. We depend on you! This mission is active between October 28, 9AM PDT and November 4, 2AM PDT. If you reach the goal in time, we’ll award you with a wallpaper artwork featuring the Assault class*. The wallpaper will be posted on the Battlefield blog for download after the mission is completed. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Assault-Shortcut-Kit-Sale-640x640.jpg Assault Shortcut Kit Sale For those who are new to the Battlefield, or perhaps have been away from it for a while, the Shortcut Kits are a handy way of catching up by unlocking all guns and gadgets. In honor of the Assault Week, you can get a 30% discount on the Assault Shortcut Kit** between October 28, 2014 and November 3, 2014. Head to the Battlelog store to check it out. Top 4 Assault Pro Tips Reviving and Timing Instinct may tell you to immediately move towards the revive icons above the heads of your near-dead team members. But as any good Assault player knows, a brief second of risk assessment is needed before you do a wild dash, defibs in hand, resulting in you getting mowed down by the very same enemy that just killed your buddy. So: before any revive, check the surrounding areas, see if your downed friend is lying behind cover, and make a quick decision. Become a Shotgun master The M26 MASS is a weapon unique to the Assault class, and is very handy for close quarter combat. Once you’ve unlocked it, you have a superb complimentary weapon to your main assault rifle. Experiment with the different kinds of rounds, find what range they fit for, and practice your aim to make every shot count. First Aid Pack or Medic Bag? Everything is a matter of taste, but there are some things to keep in mind if you’re choosing between the two health-restoring gadgets of the Assault class. The First Aid Pack is single-use but can be thrown longer, which can be an advantage on larger maps. On smaller maps, where players often circle around the same hotspots, the family-sized Medic Bag could work better. Whatever you choose, locate critical parts of the map that need your goodies, and be generous! Rack up Those Points You have a lot of opportunities to score points when playing as Assault – if you do it right. Apart from all the kills you’ll get with your assault rifle, your medic duties will also help to secure the win for the team, and all this earns you sweet XP. Help those who need it, but just so you know: healing and reviving a squad member gives you a point boost… Thank you for celebrating these four Class Weeks with us! Stay tuned to the Battlefield Blog for more Assault goodies the following days. Remember to revive everyone in sight to ace the community mission, and share your best Assault tips in the comments below. MaximumPC: Nvidia GeForce 344.48 WHQL Driver Now Available to Download
/files/u69/nvidia_gpu_2.jpgNew driver release brings Dynamic Super Resolution (DSR) to Kepler and Fermi Nvidia today made available its "Game Ready" GeForce 344.48 WHQL driver, which among other things brings support for Dynamic Super Resolution (DSR) to desktop graphics cards based on the company's Kepler and Fermi architectures. DSR is a featured that was rolled out with Nvidia's Maxwell launch, and what it does is render games at a higher, more detail resolution and then shrinks them down to the resolution of your monitor. The GPU maker's bold claim is that DSR can give you 4K (3840x2160) quality graphics on any screen, including your Full HD 1080p (1920x1080) panel. "Enthusiasts with compatible monitors and technical know-how refer to this process as Downsampling or Super Sampling. DSR drastically improves upon this process by applying a high-quality filter specifically designed for the task," Nvidia explains. "DSR also makes the process simpler with on/off integration built directly into GeForce Experience and it's compatible with all monitors, removes the need for technical know-how, and is integrated into GeForce Experience's Optimal Playable Settings." You can view a demonstration of this technology here -- drag the slider left and right to see how DSR affects the visual quality of the grass. Nvidia's latest driver also adds a bunch of application and 3D Vision profiles, along with 3D compatibility mode support for Dead Rising 3 and Strife. Gaming News: Game Pulled from Steam after Developer Tweets Gabe Newell Death Threat
/files/u166440/paranautical_activity_002.jpgDeveloper Mike Maulbeck announces resignation shortly after It is not often that Valve will pull a game from its digital distribution platform Steam. However, Paranautical Activity was removed from Steam after Code Avarice co-owner Mike Maulbeck posted an angry tweet saying that he was going to kill Valve co-founder Gabe Newell. Maulbeck had posted a series of spiteful tweets at Valve following a posting error on Valve’s part that labeled Paranautical Activity as Early Access when it was, in fact, a finished product. Upon noticing the error Maulbeck, believing that this would “greatly cripple sales and confuse customers,†took to Twitter and called Valve “incompetent,†referred to Steam as an “awful fucking monopoly,†and then said in a deleted tweet, “I am going to kill gabe newell[sic]. He is going to die.†In response, Valve removed the fast-paced, roguelike FPS shooter from Steam and contacted the developer to inform Maulbeck that it would be closing down his Steam admin account and severing ties with the developer. "I have since obviously replied to them saying that I didn't mean what I said and pleaded that they consider the monopoly they have on the PC market before totally writing us off," Maulbeck said in an email he wrote to Polygon, "But let's be real. If they took the game off the store, they're fuckin sure about their decision. There's probably nothing to be done." Since then, Mike Maulbeck went on to announce that he has left Code Avarice in a post on the developer’s website that states, “I’m really, deeply sorry that my short sighted, hot tempered actions resulted in not only my own dreams and aspirations being destroyed, but those of the entire team I worked with. I’m sorry that my statements made Valve and/or Gabe uncomfortable and upset (rightfully so).†Maulbeck went on to say that he has sold his half to Code Avarice co-owner Travis Pfenning and given up all rights on CA and its IPs. /files/u166440/paranautical_activity.jpg However, this isn’t the first time that Maulbeck has directed harsh words and criticism towards Valve and its Steam platform. Back in June 2013, both he and Pfenning criticized Valve when Paranautical Activity was rejected for publication. The reason for its rejection was that Code Avarice had signed a deal with Adult Swim after creating a Greenlight page first; a practice that Valve prohibited. In response to the rejection, both developers went on to say that Steam had a “monopoly on the market,†that “the indie community is being ignored†by Valve, and then went on to criticize other games that had been published on Steam. While Paranautical Activity is no longer available on Steam, its Project Greenlight page is still active. What do you think of this situation and was Valve justified in pulling the game from Steam? Battlefield Blog: That Battlefeel – Five Epic Battlefield Moments
Sometimes they’re unbelievable, sometimes just hilarious. Quite often they’re both. They can be that awkward moment realizing you’re on single fire mode, or when your squad buddy saves your derriere in the nick of time. We call them Battlefeels. You’ve been constantly adding to the worldwide library of these feels by your incredible videos and screenshots and below you’ll find a handful – there are of course many more out there. So sit back with your favorite beverage and enjoy these prime Battlefeels! “Pod Zook†– ponylionHD Many have tried, few have conquered. Pulling off a true Rendezook is not done easily but PonylionHD has mastered this art form, time and time again. After successfully combining the move with a giant prehistoric shark ( ), Pony has now applied futuristic equipment to perform the crazy RPG-slinging jump – using a pod in Final Stand. “C4 is my Bae†– Fahed Abudayyeh C4 in hand. A dozen foes at the same place. An epic ambush. We can only imagine how Fahed Abudayyeh felt coming across this golden opportunity on Operation Metro. The resulting kill streak crippled the enemy team, made the XP come flooding in, and produced a true Battlefeel. The total kill count? To quote Fahed’s own video description: “I couldn’t count them.“ “Anti-Air Dirtbike†– TheGuruGamer Teaming up with a buddy and going on a Dirtbike ride feels good enough in its own right. But when Dirtbike magic like this happens, it becomes a Battlefeel for the books. Watch the majestic soaring of TheGuruGamer, the swift mid-air jet takedown, and the ensuing happiness of the duo. “Warriors – BF4 Machinima†– TheS4tha Ever felt that you’re inside a movie – but with the key difference that the outcome is in your hands? It’s a feel quite common within Battlefield 4 multiplayer. The cinematic and dynamic qualities of Battlefield 4 is captured beautifully in TheS4tha’s “Warriorsâ€, featuring an intense clash at Hainan Resort. Epic paradropping, a lethal jet fly-by, and an explosive finale are some of the highlights. “Epic Sax Guy Does Battlefield 4†– REC |Filming platoon| It comes to us all. That sudden urge to lay down your weapons for a moment, and just bust a move on the Battlefield. What REC |Filming platoon| captures in the clip below is hard to describe in words. Just watch, stomp your feet, and surrender to the madness. Make sure to share your own Battlefeels with us – whether it’s a video, screen, or story – through the comment section below. Battlefield Blog: History of the Support in Battlefield
This week is all about the LMG-wielding heroes that resupply us with ammo. As part of our third BF4 Class Week we look at how the Support class in Battlefield has evolved through the years. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/bf4-history-support-1.jpg http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/bf4-history-support-2.jpg Battlefield 2 The Support class joined the all-out war party when Battlefield 2 came along in 2005. Alongside the game’s 6 other classes, the basic duties of the Support were similar to what they are now: provide suppressive fire and resupply teammates using Ammo Boxes. The Light Machine Gun was the signature weapon for the class and those who wielded it had to master both bullet spread and cooldown of this powerful firearm. Support players in Battlefield 2 were also equipped with a body armor, basically turning their starting health to 133%. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/bf4-history-support-3.jpg Battlefield 2142 Though the fight took place in the future, the qualities of the Battlefield 2142 Support class were timeless. The enemy team had to watch out for the classes devastating Sentry Guns and ability to detect invisible soldiers. Getting more accurate as it was fired, the default machine gun was also a monster in the hands of a skilled Support – especially with the huge magazine capacity. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/bf4-history-support-4.jpg Battlefield: Bad Company Accepting even more supportive challenges for the squad, the Support class of Battlefield: Bad Company took on the role of both healer and vehicle specialist. Medkits and Power Drill in hand, Support players took care of both bullet wounds and damaged rides. Teammates with empty mags had to rely on ammunition crates, though. We have fun, explosive memories of calling in the Mortar Strike to blow our enemies – or just buildings that had it coming – into smithereens. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/bf4-history-support-5.jpg Battlefield 3 The Battlefield 3 Support was in many ways a return to the kit in Battlefield 2, and the distribution of Ammo Boxes was once again one of the class’s responsibilities. With an arsenal of Light Machine Guns, Shotguns, PDWs and more, the Support was a diverse class that could be approached in many ways. Number 3 also introduced the suppression system, where gunfire cause reduced vision to enemies on the receiving end. And yes, the beloved C4 was now in the hands of the Support class. Good times! http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/bf4-history-support-6.jpg Battlefield 4 Paved with LMG bullets and ransacked Ammo Boxes, the road to the present state of the Support has been an interesting one. In Battlefield 4 we still rely on the Support for ammo refills and the new Ammo Pack – smaller but also capable of being thrown further – has changed up this process. A new grenade launcher of both airburst and smoke variety was also gifted upon the Support, and China Rising players have a new toy in the remote-controlled UCAV. All in all, there’s never been a better opportunity for supportive players to jump into Battlefield 4 and try out this class. And for you veterans, we hope you keep those resupplies and LMG kill streaks going! Learn more about the Support’s role in Battlefield 4 What’s your relationship with the Support class? Were you around when it made its debut? Share your Support stories in the comments section below! Gaming News: AMD Claims its GPUs are Great at Tackling VR Latency
Looks like Nvidia isn't the only GPU company equipped to take on VR latency While PC gamers are excited about the release of Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 980 graphics card, it is the Oculus community that is gushing over the GPU. The 980 has become a darling of the VR community with Nvidia’s claims that the new Maxwell-architecture video card will cut latency by up to 50%. It also helps that Oculus VR used the GTX 980 on its systems at its inaugural Oculus Connect event held in September. http://international.download.nvidia.com/geforce-com/international/images/nvidia-virtual-reality-technology/nvidia-virtual-reality-latency-reduction-technology-640px.png Nvidia claims that its GPU technology can potentially reduce latency from 50ms to a much more pleasant 25ms. For the uninitiated, latency is a difficult challenge for VR companies like Oculus to solve because too much latency can lead to nausea–inducing head tracking and undesired motion blur, which detract from the experience. While this sounds like a big win for the green team and a missed opportunity for AMD, Oculus VR Software Architect Tom Forsyth told Tom’s Hardware that these technological capabilities were already in AMD graphics cards. http://international.download.nvidia.com/geforce-com/international/images/geforce-gtx-980-970-feature-article/vr-direct.png Nvidia has been promoting the VR aspect of its new Maxwell GPUs When we followed up with AMD to see if it could back up those claims, the company confirmed Forsyth’s assertion and told us, “In comments to Tom’s Hardware made by Oculus VR’s Tom Forsyth, AMD Radeon hardware already supports reduced-latency VR rendering through ‘asynchronous timewarp.’ Asynchronous timewarp can be exposed in AMD Radeon hardware via the Asynchronous Compute Engines (ACE), which can schedule and execute compute and display operations independently of the graphics queue. The ACE is a fundamental architectural building block of AMD Radeon GPUs utilizing the Graphics Core Next architecture.†While the jury is still out on which graphics-card company will provide the best GPUs for VR moving forward, it sounds like you shouldn’t count out AMD in the latency department just yet. We've got a DK2 on order, so expect more VR-related stories as soon as we get it in! View the full article

Gaming News: Epic Games Releases Unreal Engine 4.5 with Major Updates
/monthly_10_2014/post-2-0-65602600-1413394744_thumb.pngOver 40 new features and a new tutorial system Good news for all of the aspiring video game developers out there. Epic Games has released Unreal Engine 4.5, a massive update for the game engine that includes over 40 new features, contributed by developers outside of Epic, along with a new tutorial system, game templates, and better support for mobile platforms and consoles. One of the newest, and biggest, features is automatic C++ hot reloading. Unreal Engine 4.5 will automatically apply the necessary C++ changes after a programmer has compiled the gameplay code from Visual Studio or Xcode. Additional new features include ray-traced shadows, a new dynamic shadowing method that traces a ray through mesh distance fields straight to the light, and screen-space subsurface scattering that allow programmers to create realistic skin materials and other effects. Upgrades to the engine’s UI and animation systems have also been made. A couple of templates have been added to the game engine as well. There is an advanced vehicle template, that can work with a VR headset, which shows a vehicle with double wishbone suspension and comes with a test track replete with terrain, ramps, and loops. For those who wish to program their game for controller support, Epic Games added in a new twin stick shooter blueprint template to help create fast-paced, top-down shooter games. The Unreal Engine’s tutorial system has also gone through an overhaul. The overhaul has done away with popup windows, features unobtrusive text bubbles over the editor to help walk a person through the interface elements and engine’s various features, and the editor will even alert a user about tutorials that haven’t been tried. For those of you who are interested, Epic Games has posted the full list of changes and additions that comes with Unreal Engine 4.5 on its forums. Battlefield Blog: BF4 Class Week: The Support
http://eaassets-a.akamaihd.net/dice-commerce/battlefield4/editorial/prod/20141013-01/bf4-support-week-1.jpg The Backbone of the Battlefield Every Battlefield 4 class is a unique piece of a puzzle, fitting together and complementing each other as part of a team. While the Support class can be played however you choose, its job is simple: support the rest of the team. See, ammo doesn’t grow on trees. And control points and M-Com stations don’t defend themselves. With the signature Ammo Box and Ammo Pack, the Support makes life easier for Engineers in need of RPG ammo, or Recons who just ran out of rounds. After all, who wouldn’t want to give your Recon friend more C4 to blow stuff up? When the Support is not busy sharing ammo, laying down suppressive fire with the mighty and class-specific LMG’s is a priority. http://eaassets-a.akamaihd.net/dice-commerce/battlefield4/editorial/prod/20141013-01/bf4-support-week-2.jpg Community Mission: Make 50 million Resupplies In honor of the backbone of the Battlefield we’d like to present you with an in-game challenge. Head to the Battlelog store to check it out: 30% Off on the Support Shortcut Kit Top 4 Support Pro Tips Master Suppressive Fire Weapons aren’t just for racking up kills. Suppressive fire blurs the vision of your enemies and using the LMG’s for this can be brutally effective. Laying down suppressive fire earns you assist points and of course, you can also rack up a good amount of tickets while you’re at it. Suppress at medium and long range, and fight the recoil by firing in bursts. Resupplies Done Right So you need to hand out Ammo Packs to your team mates to be a good Support and bring your team closer to victory. But where and when is resupplying optimal? Reading the Battlefield and the current situation is key, so stay close to squad mates and check the minimap for the icons alerting you of ammo shortage. Listen to calls for ammo and throw down boxes near choke points, M-COM stations and flags. Dominate With the Airburst The Airburst gadget can give you the upper hand in many situations if you know when to use it. The grenades from this handy toy explode mid-air, making it ideal for taking out enemies behind cover. Aim down the sights at your enemy’s cover and the Airburst will lock in that distance. A few hits will probably get you the kill, even though your target is hiding or going prone. Keep Your Gadgets and Yourself Hidden Whether you’re planning on surprising enemy nests with some Mortar fire or launching the explosive UCAV into an enemy vehicle, always think about where you are, where your enemies are, and where you place your gadgets. You’re vulnerable when you’re firing Mortar shells, and you also don’t want the gadget itself to be destroyed right after deployment. In other words: hide yourself and the Mortar. As for the UCAV, the battery life is limited, so know where your target is when you launch it. Thank you for reading!
