Battlefield Blog: The Final Stand
http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/final_stand_key_art-640x360.jpg We are ready to start talking about Battlefield 4: Final Stand, and we have a lot to talk about. In the we released a few months ago, we gave players their first glimpse at the high-tech action that awaits. In the weeks ahead we’ll also show you a lot more of that monstrous little drone and the other exciting new toys that will be in Final Stand. With Final Stand, we knew from the start that we wanted to evolve the Battlefield experience and offer weapons and vehicles that behave differently than anything else on the battlefield. Taking place on the artic landscape of Russia, where the scientists of today are experimenting with technology that will define the battlefields of tomorrow (Battlefield 2142, anyone?), Final Stand will deliver four maps that are unique and distinct. With its military installations set against a wintry landscape, expect intense, infantry-focused combat. Players will also discover secret prototype weapons and vehicles that further tie into the fiction around Final Stand, and to some extent the Battlefield series. This includes a Battle pick-up rail gun that fires a single round of powerful kinetic energy, and the hover tank prototype, which uses eight experimental jet propulsion engines to nimbly move around the battlefield. We have a few more surprises up our sleeves that we’ll share with you in the weeks ahead. We definitely had a lot of fun designing these maps and the future-tech weapons and vehicles of Final Stand and hope you guys have as much fun with them as we do. That’s why we want you to start playing them now. Starting today we are going to be testing pre-release versions of the Final Stand maps on the CTE (Community Test Environment). The amount of feedback we’ve been getting via the CTE has been incredible, and is a tremendous asset to the team here at DICE LA. That’s why we have decided to bring the community into the process even earlier as we reach the finish line of Final Stand. Starting this week we will run servers with one of the four maps available to play per day – starting Tuesday September 9th. The number of player slots and servers will be limited – so not everyone with access will get a chance to play this time around. This is the first time we have ever done something like this at this early stage – and we hope it will mean a more stable and higher quality release in the end! Taking part in the CTE We know a lot of players out there want to take part in the CTE, so we have opened up the number of available slots on the CTE. As previously, you will need a PC Premium account to sign up, visit http://cte.battlelog.com for more information about what is happening on a daily basis during this week. See you on the Battlefield! Kristoffer Bergqvist & David Sirland DICE LA The post The Final Stand appeared first on The Battlefield Blog. View the full article

Gaming News: The Top 20 Games We Want Remastered
Games worth replaying in HD No matter how old you are, there will always be at least one game that you’ll want to revisit and play all over again. Maybe even more than once. What is it that makes you want to play again? Great gameplay, great story, or even a great soundtrack are some of the factors that keeps a game on our minds. There is one other factor that helps to make a game memorable: the graphics. But sadly, as time marches on, the majority of games just can’t hold their own against the ever-increasing advancements in graphics technology. Inevitably, when we go back and play many of those games, we can’t help but cringe at how they look. Thankfully, there seems to be a bit of an HD renaissance happening for PC games these days. The recent announcement that Grim Fandango is being remastered is certainly a reason to celebrate. And it's also nice we're getting an HD remake of GTA V. But these are but a few awesome games to be revisited. Other games, such as Age of Empires II, have been touched by the hand of HD. Then there is The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, which was fully re-imagined with a remastered musical score, full voiceover, and new art style. So we decided to come up with a list of games, in chronological order by release date, that we would like to see remastered. Obviously, we are going to exclude a lot games. As a result of this, we would love to hear what games you think should be remastered and why. Please sound off in the comments below! Battlefield Blog: Dealing With Cheating on the Battlefield
Cheaters are a big problem in today’s games and especially in first person shooters. It’s my job to fight them in Battlefield as best we can and I’ve noticed frustration coming from the players regarding what’s being done in this matter. I’d like to share some of the work we do on the anti-cheat team. FairFight If you don’t already know, we introduced a new anti-cheat software called FairFight for PC that monitors each players’ gameplay and flags the player when they do something suspicious or something that no legit player can do. Creating a new rule takes time. We need to make sure that the rule is configured and tested properly before we start taking any action on it. Rules needs to be analyzed and validated. No legit player will be banned based on having multiple awesome rounds. The rules aren’t built based on solely K/D stats, FairFight takes more than that into consideration. The evidence we collect are solid and there’s no doubt that the player was cheating. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/esl_dt_cups_blog-640x360.jpg With FairFight, we can also put out restricted areas – areas where players can go into walls and be hidden and not killed. When a player enters these restricted areas they will get kicked from the server. Restricted areas have been put there by FairFight as a temporary fix until the teams can release proper fixes to the matter. Metro and Locker have had a lot of these glitches fixed since release, and when we find new ones (either ourselves or with the help from the community) we try to get a fix out as soon as possible. The banning process Our policy on banning cheaters is very strict – we only ban a player if there’s evidence that he or she is in fact cheating as we don’t want any false positives. I’m not saying that no evidence = no cheating, it’s just that we can’t ban anyone if there’s no solid evidence of it. Suspect players are being monitored a bit closer, and we look for other ways to prove their guilt. So what kind of evidence could the community look for? It could be abnormal stats or uploading a video on YouTube (please do not do any editing to the video). Players being caught cheating will never just receive a stat reset, they will always get a time-based suspension or a ban. Disputes will always be read and checked against the evidence. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Infantry-640.jpg Keep in mind that cheating players will always tell the world that they are innocent and that their stats on Battlelog might not contain anything suspect. They are instructed by their providers to have normal stats so they can fool FairFight and not get caught. Most cheat distributors have lists telling their clients how to play and not get caught by FairFight. Well, it’s not working. We are catching them. Reporting It’s great that the community helps out reporting suspect players, but we’ll never ban a player based on just reports. We use them as guidelines to who we should monitor a bit closer. Around 97% of the reports are players getting reported by someone else just one time. Insanely good players are playing Battlefield and they may come across as cheaters. Some of them may of course be cheating and sooner or later they will get caught. We have had some of the best players at DICE playing, and it’s totally awesome to see their gameplay. My team and I are working hard every day to make the anti-cheat effort as good as it can be but improvement takes time. Some improvements might be implemented instantly since it’s an easier feature while others might take a longer time. I often read forum threads and take everything you say into consideration since there are great ideas out there and some of them are already implemented. I encourage you to continue to help flag cheaters to us so everyone can enjoy the game. I hope this shows that we are taking the cheating matter seriously and that it proves that we are improving our efforts to catch the bad guys. Sincerely, Sabina Jochnick Battlefield Anti-Cheat Administrator The post Dealing With Cheating on the Battlefield appeared first on The Battlefield Blog. View the full article

Gaming News: No BS Podcast #231: AMD and Origin PC Settle Past Dispute on the Show
Plus: AMD's commitment to high-end CPUs, DDR4, 5-way GPU support, 20nm GPUs, and more! In a bit of a surprise to us, AMD and Origin PC wanted to come into the podcast room together for episode 231 of the No BS Podcast. As you may recall, this pairing is kind of surprising considering that last October, Origin PC’s co-founder and CEO Kevin Wasielewski announced that the company would be dropping AMD graphics cards from its systems, stating, “This decision was based on a combination of many factors including customer experiences, GPU performance/drivers/stability, and requests from our support staff.†He then later added, “Based on our 15+ years of experience building and selling award winning high-performance PCs, we strongly feel the best PC gaming experience is on Nvidia GPUs.†Well, not only did we get Wasielewski in the room, but we also got AMD’s VP of Global Channel Sales Roy Taylor and AMD’s Director of Public Relations Chris Hook to come on. In the show, the two parties settle their past dispute with Taylor suggesting that AMD is now committed to giving hardware partners like Origin PC more support and communication. In the podcast, he outlines some of the strategies to do so. Wasielewski also confirmed that you can now get AMD video cards in Origin PCs again and shot down any rumors that Nvidia was compensating Origin PC to slander AMD late last year when the announcement came about. Taylor also asserts that AMD’s graphics drivers have gotten a lot better over the past year, but admits this wasn’t always the case and that the company is still getting burned by that bad reputation. While Gordon was away on vacation, he did submit several questions for the rest of the crew to ask on the air, and in the show we cover a ton of ground from topics that range from: The possibility of 5-way GPU support AMD’s renewed commitment to battling Intel at the high-end CPU market AMD’s plans to start using DDR4 Origin PC and AMD’s thoughts on Valve’s upcoming Steam Machine initiative AMD’s take on the Oculus Rift/VR Freesync monitor availability Why AMD is getting into the SSD market AMD’s presence (or lack thereof) in the laptop/gaming notebook segment 20nm GPUs And then we of course top it off with your fan questions! The old format isn’t going away, and Gordon’s rants will return, but in the meantime, give this episode a listen, and let us know what you think! /files/u160416/rss-audiomp3.png /files/u160416/chicklet_rss-2_0.png /files/u160416/chicklet_itunes.gif Subscribe to the magazine for only 99 cents an issue: In print On Zinio On Google Play On iTunes On the Amazon Kindle Store On the Barnes & Noble Nook Store Stalk us in a number of ways: Become a fan on Facebook Follow us on Twitter Subscribe to us on Youtube Subscribe to our RSS feed Subscribe to the podcast on iTunes email us at: maximumpcpodcast AT gmail DOT com Leave us a voicemail at 877-404-1337 x1337 View the full article

MaximumPC: Amazon Acquires Twitch, Rumors Say Acquisition Was up to $1.1 Billion
Who saw that coming? /files/u166440/twitch_logo.jpgUp until now, everyone was expecting Google to purchase Twitch. Rumors had been passed around that Google was going to purchase the video game streaming service for $1 billion. Instead of Google being the one to buy it, Twitch ceo Emmett Shear announced today that Amazon has acquired Twitch. However, Shear didn’t disclose how much Amazon had spent, though speculation is that the price was $1.1 billion. “Today, I’m pleased to announce we’ve been acquired by Amazon,†said Shear. “We chose Amazon because they believe in our community, they share our values and long-term vision, and they want to help us get there faster. We’re keeping most everything the same: our office, our employees, our brand, and most importantly our independence. But with Amazon’s support we’ll have the resources to bring you an even better Twitch.†The acquisition of Twitch appears to be a great deal for Amazon. Back in 2013, the streaming service had reported that there were 45 million users who had viewed around 12 billion minutes of video. Aside from primarily being used to stream games on PC, Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One also feature Twitch, increasing the services reach and consumer base. Despite Twitch’s popularity, it has been receiving quite a bit of criticism for some recent policy changes. Earlier this month, it announced that it would no longer save VODs for an indefinite amount of time. In addition, it has started to scan VODs for copyrighted music in 30-minute increments. If copyright music is detected, then that 30-minute block of video is muted. But how do you feel about Amazon’s acquisition of Twitch? Is it a better alternative to Google? Battlefield Blog: Community’s Most Wanted: Rescue Mode and Competitive Play
That’s right. It’s time. Let’s talk…COMPETITIVE PLAY! We’re pretty excited to show off a mode you guys have been asking about – our hostage-rescue mode, titled, appropriately enough, Rescue. In Rescue, SWAT has three minutes to force entry into the criminals’ barricaded hostage locations and rescue the hostages. There are no respawns in this mode, so if you’re dead – you’re out of the round. The mode is played round-after-round for a series of rounds, with the team winning the most times being the overall match winner. We’ve put in some cool touches to make it deeper – for you to explore and use for your advantage. One of them is improved situational awareness through the use of audio. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Hardline_Boomer.jpg Sound plays a critical role in this mode – listening for enemies as they move or reposition can give you that split-second advantage you need that makes the difference between winning the fight – or losing and sitting out! There are lots of ways to use this – do you want to throw out a decoy to distract the enemy? Are you trying to trick the enemy by opening doors you don’t plan on going through? Are you trying to distract the enemy with spurious movement sounds? Another new factor – we have doors that can be opened and closed – it might sound trivial at first, but they are a huge factor in tactical play. Whether you’re listening or watching for a door to open to trigger an explosive, unleash a fusillade of fire, or maneuver into a good position, that door is a key factor in play. You might find some clever tactics where you control the state of the door – open or closed – and when that state is changed, you know someone has passed that way, even if you didn’t hear it. I destroyed an unwary player the other day using this trick while explaining it to someone watching, it was very rewarding. I was able to follow him through a series of doors I’d closed earlier – that he had opened – and run up behind him before he knew where I was We’re also adding some cool touches with interactive objects. We have a number of objects you can interact with– turn on a radio to cover the sound of your footsteps, start a fire to conceal your movements – or blow a hole in the wall for a new entry point. We’ve got defib pickups, medical stations, ammo lockers, and more distributed in the map for tactical use. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/ChopShop_Nick_1080.jpg But none of this matters, you say, if the level design ain’t right! We know! We have some incredible players on the team, some who have played competitively, and in addition we’ve been talking to members of the competitive community. We’re taking all this feedback to ensure Rescue offers competitive players a tactical challenge, while at the same time keeping it fun and fast-paced. We’re focused on managing the flow, with a number of controllable routes of entry and access, but ensuring that you’re making interesting choices on where to focus your attention and how you’re balancing your risk versus reward. We’re helping to ensure that if you want a fast contact time, you can find it, yet we’re keeping in mind that careful, quiet maneuvering is a key aspect to this kind of mode. We really love playing Rescue here at the studio. We hope you love it too! Regardless, we always want to hear your feedback. MaximumPC: Microsoft Uses PCs to Showcase Xbox Game at Gamescom
/files/u166440/xboxonelogo.jpgCaught again Over the past few years it seems that both Sony and Microsoft have, at one point or another, demonstrated console games on PCs instead of on consoles at gaming events. This time, CentrumHer caught Microsoft using PCs to showcase an Xbox game at Gamescom. CentrumHer was able to take a couple of pictures that showed a demonstration of the game Ori and the Blind Forest crashing to a Windows 7 desktop rather than the company’s current operating system Windows 8. But that isn’t all. The pictures taken also showed that the PCs were most likely using Nvidia GPUs rather than AMD GPUs. An interesting thing to note, considering that the current generation of consoles are all equipped with AMD GPUs. In one of the pictures, you'll see a notification at the bottom right corner of the screen informing the user that “An updated version of GeForce Experience is available.†Showing games on PCs at events such as Gamescom and E3 are common practice when it comes to developers like Ubisoft. Developers and publishers want to show off a product in the best possible way and that is on the PC. To be fair, though, Ori and the Blind Forest is expected to be released on the PC platform as well as the Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Follow Sean on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook View the full article

In the final stretch, we wrap up the daily Battleshots contests with several more chances to win an XFX AMD Radeon R9 270X graphics card, a weekend long 2XP event for all players to rank up in, and sharing the results of the fourth Community Mission. We will also be announcing the Top 3 videos of the Stunt Video Competition, each will be taking home an ultimate gaming PC rig powered by AMD. If you haven’t cast your vote yet, head on over to the voting page. Finally, as we bring Battlefest to an end, we’ve opened up Battlefield 4 for new players to play for free for a limited time in the latest Origin Game Time feature. So, grab a buddy and get them onto the Battlefield – send them here for more details. For more details on Battlefest events, visit the original announcement here.
