Battlefield Blog: Grappling Hook Community Mission: Complete
The last few days of the Battlefield Hardline beta have been a great example of community cooperation. Last week, we launched a Community Mission where we asked you to collectively fire 1,000,000 Grappling Hooks in-game. Count the zeroes again – that’s a full million. http://wp.battlelog.esn.me/en/files/2014/06/grappling-618.jpg You did not let us down. After 144 hours, over 1,000,000 shots were fired. As promised, this feat will be awarded with a unique Battlefield Hardline Patch. This in-game Patch will be rewarded to everyone who purchases and plays Battlefield Hardline at retail launch in October, regardless if you played the beta or not. So, congratulations and kudos on your grappling abilites. We hope you will enjoy your reward – and of course Battlefield Hardline itself – this fall. MaximumPC: Ubisoft Gives Reason for Disabled Settings in PC Version of Watch Dogs
/files/u166440/watch_dogs_ss6_99860.jpgDisabled visual enhancements found in the game’s code The PC version of Watch Dogs has caused quite a bit of frustration for PC gamers since its release back in May. The game’s launch was hampered by Uplay issues, Ubisoft’s digital distribution platform, and overall performance issues. But the latest controversy has caused Ubisoft to respond to the discovery of deactivated settings for the PC version of Watch Dogs. Modders recently discovered that high-end graphical effects had been deactivated for the PC retail version with NeoGaf user Jibbed documenting the discovery. References were found in the code that suggested the settings and animations were meant for an â€E3†mode when the game had been shown at the conference. Meanwhile, the discovery of the deactivated effects in the game’s code prompted a modder with the handle TheWorse to release a mod that activates the visual enhancements Speculation on Ubisoft’s reasons for disabling the graphical effects had prompted the developer to respond on its official website that reads, “The dev team is completely dedicated to getting the most out of each platform, so the notion that we would actively downgrade quality is contrary to everything we’ve set out to achieve. We test and optimize our games for each platform on which they’re released, striving for the best possible quality.†Admitting to the existence of the disabled settings in Watch Dogs, which broke into Raptr’s “most-played games on PC†list for the month of May, Ubisoft continued, “The PC version does indeed contain some old, unused render settings that were deactivated for a variety of reasons, including possible impacts on visual fidelity, stability, performance and overall gameplay quality. Modders are usually creative and passionate players, and while we appreciate their enthusiasm, the mod in question (which uses those old settings) subjectively enhances the game’s visual fidelity in certain situations but also can have various negative impacts. Those could range from performance issues, to difficulty in reading the environment in order to appreciate the gameplay, to potentially making the game less enjoyable or even unstable.†In light of its admittance, will Ubisoft release a patch, or multiple patches, to enable the visual enhancements or will it be up to the modding community to pick up where they left off? MaximumPC: No BS Podcast #226: In-depth Interview with AMD Graphics Guru Richard Huddy
/files/u154082/richard_huddy.jpgAMD exec doubles down on assertion that Nvidia Gameworks presents a threat to PC gamers This week on episode 226 of the No BS Podcast, AMD graphics guru Richard Huddy joins the Maximum PC crew. For those unfamiliar with the AMD exec, Huddy has spent time working at ATI, AMD, Nvidia, Intel, and is now back at AMD. He’s also widely considered one of the pioneers of DirectX. Suffice it to say, he knows his stuff. In this special edition of the podcast, we pick his brain on a variety of topics relating to AMD. Easily the most exciting part of the discussion is the fact that Huddy doubles down on AMD’s assertion that Nvidia Gameworks presents a threat to PC gamers, most notably by adding lines of code to games that would hinder performance on AMD graphics cards (It’s some pretty damning assertions). We also talk about the recent controversy surrounding the PC version of Watch Dogs, discuss Mantle vs DirectX, AMD’s answer to Nvidia Gsync, 4K, and the future of graphics/graphics cards. http://www.maximumpc.com/sites/future.p2technology.com/files/imce-images/rss-audiomp3.png http://www.maximumpc.com/sites/future.p2technology.com/files/imce-images/chicklet_rss-2_0.png http://www.maximumpc.com/sites/future.p2technology.com/files/imce-images/chicklet_itunes.gif Stalk us on the following networks: Subscribe to the podcast on iTunes Become a fan on Facebook Tweet us on Twitter Subscribe to us on Youtube Check out our Windows 8 app in Microsoft's app store Subscribe to our RSS feed If you have any feedback or questions feel free to: Email us at maximumpcpodcast@gmail.com or Leave us a voicemail at 877-404-1337 x1337 Subscribe to Maximum PC in print or on Google Play, iTunes, Kindle, Nook and Zinio. MaximPC: Steam Summer Sale for 2014 Has Begun
/files/u166440/steam_summer_sale_2014.jpgWhat team are you on? Been wondering what to spend your hard-earned money on this summer? Well Valve’s Steam Summer Sale 2014 has begun and your wallet will never be the same way again thanks to the various sales, daily sales and flash sales that will entice you from June 19 to June 30. However, with this year’s summer sale, there is the Summer Adventure you can participate in that focuses on Valve’s Steam trading cards that were implemented last year. While trying to decide whether or not to purchase games on the Daily or Flash sales, that can range from 10 percent to 85 percent off, Steam users will also earn points for crafting Team Badges. By crafting the Summer Sale 2014 badge users will earn points for the team they have been randomly sorted into. Each day the team that has earned the most points will have 30 random team members chosen who will get three games from their wishlist for free. The rest of the winning team’s members will receive two bonus Summer Sale trading cards. But even if you are not one of the lucky 30, crafting the summer badge will still provide you with some rewards. Users will get one in-game item, one emoticon, one profile background, and a chance for a Team Token. Team members will also earn points by crafting game badges but the points gained will be significantly lower. Regular game badges will earn one point and the foil badges 10 while each Summer Adventure Badge will earn 10 points and the foil badge 100 points for the crafter's team. In order to collect all 10 of the Steam Adventure trading cards needed to craft the Summer Adventure badge, users can earn one card for each game badge created, receive one card per $10 USD spent (or equivalent monetary value), and get one card for every three votes they cast for the Community’s Choice of which games should go on sale next. Some of the games on sale today include The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition for $3.99, Democracy 3 for $8.49, Tomb Raider for $9.99, and Half-Life 2, one of our 10 Best source Games, for $4.99. What games are you hoping to buy during the summer sale and what team are you on? Sound off in the comments below! Follow Sean on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook View the full article
