MaximumPC: Twitch Enables Copyright Scans and Limits Archiving of VODs
/files/u166440/twitch_logo.jpgCopyright infringements results in VODs being muted Back in May it was rumored that Google was looking to purchase Twitch for $1 billion. While we wait for confirmation on this rumor from either side, Twitch is making some big changes. According to its official blog, Twitch has enabled copyright sweeps and has limited archiving of video content. Twitch announced that it has partnered with Audible Magic to help scan past and future VODs for any copyright music that might have been used during live streams. While scans will look for music owned by Audible Magic, or controlled by its clients, Twitch also revealed that the scans will look for in-game and ambient music. 30-minute blocks of VODs will be scanned and, if any copyrighted music is detected, the audio for that block of time will be muted and the volume controls disabled. However, Twitch stated that such scans will not happen during live broadcasts only for past broadcasts and highlights. In addition, the company has also made changes to how long it will archive past broadcasts and highlights. The most immediate change was the removal of the “Save Forever†button. For regular streamers, VODs will now be saved for only 14 days while Turbo Subscribers and Partners will have their past broadcasts and highlights stored for 60 days. Providing a reason for why past VODs would no longer be stored indefinitely, Twitch CEO Emmett Shear said, “We found that the vast majority of past broadcast views happen within the first two weeks after they’re created. On the days following, viewership reduces exponentially. We also discovered that 80 percent of our storage capacity is filled with past broadcasts that are never watched.†With these changes, will you continue to use Twitch to stream your gaming sessions? MaximumPC: Graphics Analysis: Wolfenstein: The New Order
We compare Wolfenstein: The New Order's low, medium, high, and ultra settings with pics and video For this graphical analysis feature, we examine the graphical capabilities of Bethesda's Wolfenstein: The New Order. When the first-person shooter was released on PC, it had tons of graphical glitches, which included long load times and massive texture pop-in issues. Luckily, most of these problems have been sorted out with a few patches. Now the new Wolfenstein title is known for being a beautiful-looking game, so we wanted to take this graphical behemoth for a test run to see how it looks across its different graphics presets. Is this game going to show off your graphics card in all of its glory? Read on to find out! Testing Methodology: We wanted our tests to be easily replicated, so we ran the game in 1080p, using Wolfenstein’s preset graphics options, which include "Low," "Medium," "Highâ€, and “Ultraâ€. We should mention that the point of this test is to analyze image quality and visual fidelity. This is not a frame rate performance test. We captured our screenshots and video with a fairly beefy gaming rig, which sports an Intel Core i7 4770K CPU, 8GB of 1600MHz G.Skill RAM, and a GTX 780 video card. The settings we used for each test are shown in the screenshots below: /files/u154280/2014-06-02_00001.jpg Low Settings /files/u154280/2014-06-02_00002.jpg Medium Settings /files/u154280/2014-06-02_00003.jpg High Settings /files/u154280/2014-06-02_00004.jpg Ultra Settings Video Scene Analysis: Note: You can click on the images below to see an animated GIF comparing the scene running across low, medium, high, and ultra settings. /files/u154280/mech_scene.png Mech Scene: The first scene has the main character, William Blazkowicz, inside of a mech suit. When the game is rendering in Low settings we see very little detail in our character's clothing. His sleeves gain more texture and color as we go from Low to Ultra settings. The mech suit also has some differences going from Low to Ultra settings, but they’re very minimal. For example, the gauges on the left-hand side gain more texture and lighting as we ramp up graphical fidelity. The rest of the scene looks almost the same across all four presets. Yes, there are a few extra textures sprinkled into the landscape in High and Ultra settings, which Low and Medium don’t have, but again, this a very small difference and you really have to pixel peep to notice them. /files/u154280/soldier_scene_3.png Soldier scene: In the Soldier scene above, we see there’s less texture and definition in the soldier who’s standing in the left corner of the screen. His clothing gets more texture as we go up in graphical quality. The same can be said for the soldier in the middle of the screen too. The texture quality of his clothing is better in Ultra than in Low settings, but the rest of the scene looks almost the same across the other presets. The dark colors and low lighting in this scene's background make it hard for us to discern any other meaningful differences. /files/u154280/airplane_scene.png Airplane scene: The hardest scene to tell any difference between the three presets is the Airplane scene. We couldn’t see anything inside the aircraft which looked noticeably different. The ocean in the game's Ultra preset looks the best of the four scenes, but that’s the only noticeable difference we could effectively draw here. The interior of the cabin looks very similar across all four presets. Conclusion: Analyzing Wolfenstein's different visual settings, we were surprised by how hard it was for us to tell the difference between any of the game’s four presets. At times, we really had to dig to bring out the nitty gritty details. In general, we found that characters look more fully realized the higher you crank up the settings. If you’re not looking at soldiers on screen, the game looks very similar across all the settings. The similar look and feel in all four presets is in part due to Wolfenstein's dark color palette. When Wolfenstein adds in more textures onto gray, black, and brown surfaces, it can be hard to notice much of a visual improvement. If the game was brighter and offered a wider color palette, it may be easier to pick up on the differences. Regardless, as it stands, it doesn't look like Wolfenstein: The New Order is going to shock and awe anyone at the highest settings, at least not compared to the game's lower presets. Which game would you like us to do a deep dive graphical analysis on next? Let us know in the comments below! Follow Chris on Google+ or Twitter View the full article

Battlefield Blog: Updates from the Battlefield: Core Gameplay Improvements
As some of you may know, our team at DICE LA is working hard to finish the next game update for Battlefield 4, aiming at a release in September. Meanwhile, we’re continuing to utilize the Battlefield 4 Community Test Environment to gather feedback and make various improvements to the game. Core Gameplay Update The current CTE initiative revolves around making the core gameplay of Battlefield 4 even better. This initiative has been in full swing for little over two months now, and we’ve made a lot tweaks and changes that we hope you have enjoyed. As we’re nearing the end of this initiative and the release of the next Battlefield 4 update, these are the major fixes that it will include: Game Mode Improvements General improvements and tweaks have been made to the following game modes: Rush, Obliteration, Obliteration Competitive, Capture the Flag and Carrier Assault. Visual Recoil Close and medium range optic reticules do not move with the gun any longer, however both bullet spread and bullet drop are still present. Soldier Movement Changes have been made to soldier movement so that it closely matches the one in Battlefield 3, but without compromising the visual fidelity. This change also makes it easier to get away from undesirable firefights. Additionally, we’ve dampened third person hit reactions where the soldier previously moved his head around a lot when getting shot at HUD Triage Focusing on clarity, and de-cluttering the HUD/UI to only show what is important – we have added several options and functionality to make your screen much less cluttered (and give you a lot of choice in making it the way you want). Revive Mechanic Improvements A special effort went into making revives easier to use, more robust and easier to understand. Additions include a “fully charged” paddle sound, UI indication on revive time and better networked ragdolls. “Netcode†Improvements Making ping differences, trade kills and kills behind cover less of an issue by lowering the time allowed to damage on the client side. Automatic High Frequency Update setting enforced with the intent of release to all platforms, including Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Improvements to bullet damage times from client to client, “dusting” and de-syncs. Vehicle Balance Identifying and tweaking the top vehicles in need of buffs and nerfs. Weapon Balance We’ve focused on maintaining a consistent Time To Kill (how long an average engagement lasts for). With the changes to visual recoil, the third person hit reactions and improved “tickrates†has been sped up somewhat as we still need to balance this with damage and recoil changes. Suppression systems has also been re-tuned and made clearer. What’s next? The next initiative on the CTE will be called the Teamplay Initiative. Here we will focus on improving teamplay and the objective aspects of playing Battlefield. This will include everything from Commander, Squads, Field Upgrades and Game Mode improvements, features and bug fixes. Taking part in the CTE To take part in early content, feature and improvement testing, you need to own Battlefield 4 premium. To sign up, visit http://cte.battlelog.com. And as always – a big THANK YOU to all the players who have helped or is helping making us make Battlefield 4 a better game to play! Battlefield Blog: Battlefield Hardline: Community's Most Wanted List Weapons Data
The third edition of the Community’s Most Wanted List is here! Time to hand over to Thad Sasser, Lead Multiplayer Designer on Battlefield Hardline. I’ve discussed topics for the blog with a few Battlefield players, and one of the great suggestions I got was to talk about some of the data we’ve collected from the Battlefield Hardline Beta and how it’s influencing the game balance. Please continue to suggest topics in the comments below or on Twitter. http://blogscdn.battlefield.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Battlefield-Hardline-5-WM.jpg Let’s take a look at some of the data we’ve collected on weapons! We’ll start with the most lethal weapons, which is nice because it lines up nicely with what I think might be an obvious point of comparison: the AKM versus the M16A3. No contest, you think, right? The AKM wins, hands down. Actually, the data says otherwise: Weapon FiredVsHit Kills FiredVsKills HitVsKills Headshot FiredVsHeadshot m16a4 13.83% 13,746,275 2.23% 16.15% 3,117,055 0.51% akm 12.11% 9,087,162 3.38% 27.93% 2,241,228 0.83% More kills with the M16. M16 looks like it has higher accuracy by a little. AKM clearly doing more damage, with almost double the hit-to-kill ratio, but lower overall accuracy. These seem more balanced than we’d expected – we kind of figured the AKM would beat the M16A3. The M16 has some things in its favor for the beta – it was the default gun on the default class, for starters, which tends to push its use up for sure, and it’s easy to learn. We’ll keep our eye on these two. The AKM might still be a little OP, but it’s in the right ballpark for sure – it doesn’t feel like we need to take any action at the moment. Let’s look at the next two highest kill weapons, the MG36 and the G36C. Weapon FiredVsHit Kills FiredVsKills HitVsKills Headshot FiredVsHeadshot mg36 11.14% 6,419,002 1.61% 14.46% 1,432,628 0.36% g36c 16.03% 5,771,683 2.41% 15.01% 1,053,956 0.44% Clearly, the MG is spitting out more bullets. It’s got a decent rate of hits, but lower percentage of kills and headshots. The G36C feels a little anemic next to the M16 and AK, with a worse kill % and an MG-like percentage of hits-to-kill – it kind of feels like the worst mix of the AKM and the M16 in terms of stats. We’d identified this weapon as needing a buff, and the stats support that. I was going to write some more on character progression and look at some more of the weapon stats, but we’ll save that for next time! Hopefully you found this interesting and informative. MaximumPC: Latest Update Lets Raptr Users Record and Stream Games
/files/u166440/raptr_logo.jpgRecord gameplay and your own reactions simultaneously Last month AMD introduced the Game DVR beta to its Raptr service. Today, a new update has been released so Raptr users can record or stream gameplay videos now. The update also adds a solution that facilitates seamless uploading and sharing of videos. The new video capture solution is called the Game Video Recorder and provides users with the ability to stream or record gameplay videos. Instead of recording just 10 minutes of footage, like the Game DVR beta, GVR will let users record 20 minutes of gameplay even after events have transpired. Users will also be able to automatically upload and share recorded gameplay with an online destination that is shared amongst the Raptr community. Both AMD and Nvidia GPU users will be able to take advantage of the service that, according to Raptr, will have virtually no affect on system performance. “Watching recorded and live-streamed PC gameplay footage has quietly become a massive trend involving tens of millions of viewers and billions of hours spent watching,†said Raptr co-founder and CEO Dennis Fong. “But to date, only a modest fraction of gamers actually record and stream some of their gaming exploits, because the tools haven’t been easy, accessible or resource-efficient enough. We’re excited to be improving the process and experience in all of those areas, and at the same time offering nearly universal support for all the latest GPUs regardless of manufacturer. This marks another big step forward in our ongoing effort to help make PC gaming consistently awesome.†Raptr is claiming that both GVR and live-streaming features are supported by over 5,000 games. A significant amount compared to the 169 titles, according to Raptr, that Nvidia’s GeForce Experience supports. In addition, users will also have the option to include their own real-time reactions in the recording sessions through the use of a webcam and microphone to create a picture-in-picture effect.
